초록

오늘날 디지털 기술의 발전 아래 대략 6,000종 이상의 다양한 한글 활자체가 개발되고 있다. 그러나 우리 선조들이 남긴 옛 문헌을 통해 한글문화의 전통성과 정체성을 살려 나가기 위한 옛 활자체 개발 및 이에 대한 구체적인 연구는 민관을 막론하고 찾아보기 힘들다. 본 연구는 디지털 기술을 통한 한글 옛 활자체의 개발 현황과 그 사례고찰을 통해 미래에 상응하는 개발 제안을 모색하여, 21세기 정보사회에서 옛 한글 문화를 구축하는 데 이바지함을 목적으로 하였다. 본 연구의 방법으로는 국내 대표 4개 활자개발회사와 2개 공공기관을 선정, 지금까지 개발된 옛 활자체 현황 및 그 사례를 살펴보았다. 그 결과, 총 보유 한글 활자체 (±)736종 중 옛 활자체의 보유율은 4%(27여종)의 아주 저조하고 침체된 개발로 파악되었다. 이와 함께 국제화시대에 상응하는 옛 활자체 개발의 필요성이 절실하게 요구되었다. 한글 옛 활자체에 대한 조형적인 연구와 보다 확장된 기술적 개발은 민관을 막론하고 지속적으로 해결되어야 할 시대적 과제로, 본 연구에서는 21세기의 디지털 기술 환경에 부응하는 복원 옛 한글 활자체 개발을 다음과 같이 제안하였다. 첫째, 우선 옛 문헌에 있는 글자체의 조형적 특성을 가독성과 판독성을 바탕으로 최대한으로 복원한다. 둘째, 시대적으로 혼합조판을 고려한 통일된 특성의 다국어 활자체의 개발 지원 환경을 제공한다. 셋째, 가로조판 및 전통적인 세로조판의 기술적 완성과 확장 한글 지원 환경을 구축한다. 넷째, 효율적인 활용을 위한 활자가족을 구성한다. 다섯째, 학제간의 확장된 연구 및 개발을 구축한다. 이를 바탕 한 활발한 옛 활자체의 개발을 통해 우리시대 및 미래에 상응하는 새로운 문화적 콘텐츠로서, 또한 역사적 자료 정립의 일환으로서 옛 한글 문화의 확장을 이루어 나가야 할 것이다.

영어초록

Evolving digital technologies today have enabled the development of a variety Hangul typefaces that roughly amount to more than 6,000 different kinds. Yet, it is difficult to witness typefaces in old Korean literature being studied in-depth or developed to preserve the Korean alphabet Hangul’s cultural heritage and identity founded by our ancestors. This study therefore aims to review cases of old Hangul typefaces being developed through digital technologies and thereby make suggestions for future development in order to contribute to forming a culture for old Hangul typefaces in the twenty-first century information society. For this study, four leading type design companies and two public agencies have been selected to analyze their cases of old typeface development. The analysis found that old typefaces accounted for a mere 4% (approximately 27 typefaces) out of the 736 or so different Hangul typefaces developed by the companies or agencies. It also revealed the need to develop old typefaces that better suit today’s age of internationalization. Hence, this study suggests the following for the restoration and development of old Hangul typefaces so that they may meet the demands of the twenty-first century’s digital technology-based environment. First, the stylistic characteristics of Hangul typefaces in old Korean literature needs to be revived as much as possible with legibility and readability. Second, considering the trend of mixed typesetting, an environment needs to be established for developing and supporting typefaces with characteristics common across multiple languages. Third, the technical perfection of horizontal typesetting as well as traditional vertical typesetting should be encouraged. Fourth, type families need to be formed for their efficient use. Fifth, inter-disciplinary research and development needs to be attempted. Based on these suggestions, actively developing old Hangul typefaces should be able to help them sustain their role in our future as an evolving part of Korean culture and also contribute to the identification and study of historical material.
