『기생 및 창기에 관한 서류철』을 활용한 선행연구의 비판적 검증 및 학술적 오류 정정 － 서지영(2005)의 「식민지 시대 기생 연구(Ⅰ)–기생집단의 근대적 재편 양상」을 중심으로 － (A Critical Review of Preceding Research on Records of Gisaeng and Changgi and Correction of Academic Errors － Focusing on A Study on Gisaeng in Colonial Korea (I) － Focusing on Modern Reconstruction o)

초록

본 연구에서는 『기생 및 창기에 관한 서류철』을 적극적으로 활용한 연구들 가운데 공창제도, 젠더, 섹슈얼리티, 페미니즘, 성매매제도 등의 일부 여성학 관련 연구들에 그대로 악영향을 미친 서지영(2005)의 「식민지 시대 기생 연구(Ⅰ)–기생집단의 근대적 재편 양상을 중심으로」를 중심으로, 『기생 및 창기에 관한 서류철』의 ‘기생 관련 서류’와 ‘창기 관련 서류’의 착각·오독(誤讀)으로 인해 파생된 ‘다양한 학술적 오류들’과 ‘왜곡된 내용들’을 당대의 사료들과 『서류철』 원문의 정확한 해독과 분석을 통해서 객관적이고 실증적으로 하나하나조목조목 올바르게 바로잡았다.
서지영(2005)의 「식민지 시대 기생 연구(Ⅰ)–기생집단의 근대적 재편 양상을중심으로」에는 1. ‘기생(妓生)≒창기(매음녀)’ 즉 ‘기생(妓生)은 창기(娼妓)와 유사한 존재’ 또는 ‘기생=매음녀’라는 근본적으로 왜곡된 인식 하의 논지 전개, 2. 대한제국기 및 일제강점기 ‘전문 예술인(藝術人)인 기생(妓生)’과 ‘공인 매춘부(賣春 婦)인 창기(娼妓)’의 실제 법적·정책적 속성 및 사회적 역할에 대한 개념적 이해와 인식의 결여(缺如), 3. ‘기생집단’을 ‘다양한 속성의 매음녀(賣淫女)들이 포함된 집단’으로 왜곡, 4. ‘무명색(無名色)’의 정의 오류, 5. ‘색주가(色酒家)’와 ‘작부(酌婦)’의 개념적 정의 및 속성 혼동, 6. ‘법령 그 자체만을 다루는 문헌적 연구’로인한 ‘성급한 일반화의 오류’ 및 ‘기생(妓生)’을 ‘매춘 관련 대상의 범주’에 끼워넣기, 7. ‘의도적인 인용원문의 글자(문맥) 바꾸기’를 통한 사(史)실 왜곡, 8. 미(未) 인가·비(非)설립된 ‘창기조합’인 ‘경성유녀조합’을 ‘최초의 기생조합’으로 오인(誤認), 9. 단속령 발령 날짜 오기(誤記), 10. ‘창기 관련 서류’를 온전히 ‘기생 관련 서류들’로 오독(誤讀), 11. ‘한성기생조합소의 도일(渡日) 공연, 개성(開城) 공연, 경성고아원을 위한 자선연주회 공연’을 ‘한성창기조합소의 공연’으로 변질(變 質), 12. ‘한성창기조합’을 ‘한성기생조합’으로 완전히 오인하여 “‘한성기생조합’ 과 ‘한성창기조합’은 ‘동일한 집단’이었다”, “‘한성기생조합’은 관기 출신 기생들과 창기(매음녀)들이 혼합된 형태로, 혼성적 성격을 띠었다”고 왜곡시키는 등 다양한 학술적 오류들과 오독(誤讀)·사(史)적으로 틀린 내용, 그리고 기생(妓生) 에 대한 왜곡된 내용들이 만연해있다.
그리고 결과적으로 이러한 다양한 오류들은 ‘가무연행자인 예술인(藝術人)으로서의 기생(妓生)의 본질’과 ‘한반도 최초의 민간 여성 예술인(藝術人) 조직인한성기생조합소(漢城妓生組合所)의 본질적인 성격’을 왜곡·타락시키는 결과를초래했다. 따라서 이러한 왜곡된 내용들은 이제라도 올바르게 정정되어 왜곡된 내용의 반복적 재생산이라는 학술적 악순환을 끊어야 할 것이다.

영어초록

Among the studies that actively utilized bibliographies on Records of Gisaeng and Changgi, this study focused on A Study on Gisaeng in Colonial Korea (I): Focusing on Modern Reconstruction of Gisaeng Group by Suh Jiyoung (2005), which significantly influenced the field of women‘s studies, including thought on the state-regulated prostitution system, gender, sexuality, and feminism. This study also analyzed the historical records and bibliographies of the times to correct the academic errors and misinterpretations caused by misunderstanding the Gisaeng and prostitute-related documents in Records of Gisaeng and Changgi. A Study on Gisaeng in Colonial Korea (I): Focusing on Modern Reconstruction of Gisaeng Group involved the following academic errors and distorted facts: (1) Gisaeng were regarded as similar to or fundamentally the same as prostitutes; (2) Suh Jiyoung’s research lacked conceptual understanding and awareness of the legal and political characteristics and social roles of Gisaeng as professional entertainers, and of prostitutes as state-regulated prostitutes in the Korean Empire and during the Japanese colonial period; (3) the study misunderstood the Gisaeng Group as a group of prostitutes with various characteristics; (4) it incorrectly defined Mumyeongsaek; (5) it distorted the definition and characteristics of Saekjuga and Jakbu; (6) it made a hasty generalization by focusing on literary studies that covered the legislation itself; (7) it also distorted historical facts by including Gisaeng in the category of prostitutes and intentionally changing the texts (contexts) of the reference sources; (8) it misunderstood Gyeongseong Prostitute Association, an unauthorized and unfounded association of prostitutes, as the first association of Gisaeng; (9) it also miswrote the date when regulations were enforced on Gisaeng; (10) it mistook the documents related to prostitutes as the documents related to Gisaeng; (11) it misattributed the Hanseong Gisaeng Association’s concert in Japan, Gaeseong, and the charity concert at Gyeongseong Orphanage to the Hanseong Prostitute Association; (12) and it incorrectly regarded the Hanseong Prostitute Association as the Hanseong Gisaeng Association, considered the Hanseong Gisaeng Association and the Hanseong Prostitute Association to be the same association, and posited that the Hanseong Gisaeng Association comprised of both prostitutes and former Gisaeng.
In conclusion, such academic errors resulted in distorting the essence of Gisaeng as entertainers specializing in singing and dance performances and the fundamental characteristics of the Hanseong Gisaeng Association as the first private organization of female artists in Korea. These errors must be corrected to end the cycle of producing and spreading historically inaccurate and distorted information.
