초록

본 연구의 목적은 여성의 출산 경험을 영적 성장과 성숙의 차원으로 고찰하고, 그로부터 기독교교육적 모델을 제안하는 것이다. 출산과 양육은 중년기 여성의 삶에 강력한 영향력을 행사하며 정체성의 형성에 결정적 역할을 하지만, 여성 삶의 정황과는 상관없이 신학적인 축복의 상징 혹은 양육의 관점에서 연구되었다. 따라서 본 연구는 에릭 에릭슨(Erik Erikson)의 내적 공간(Inner Space)과 생성성(Generativity) 개념을 분석함으로써 여성의 모성 경험을 중심으로 연구를 시작한다. 그는 남성 경험이 표준이던 시대에, 여성의 내적 공간을 긍정함으로써 남근 선망으로 이해되던 출산 경험을 여성의 창조적 가능성으로 해석하였으며, 이로써 생성성을 형성할 수 있다고 보았다. 초기 에릭슨이 제안하였던 생성성은 다음 세대를 출산하고 양육하는 의미의 생식성(Procreativity)을 포함하여, 경제적 의미의 생산성(Productivity)과 새로운 생각의 창조성(Creativity)을 포괄하는 넓은 개념이었다. 그러나 이후 학자들의 남성편향적 해석의 결과로, 경제적 의미의 생산성으로 단순 축소된 경향이 있다. 본래적 의미의 생성성에서는 출산과 양육에 일종의 신성성이 암시되었으나 이는 점차 해체되어서 사적, 기능적 차원으로 이해하게 되었으며, 오늘날 출산과 양육을 경제적 관점으로 바라보게 된 것이 현실이다. 이러한 경향성은 신체적, 심리적, 사회문화적, 신앙공동체적 맥락에서 모두 발견되며, 출산과 양육 기피 현상에 일조하게 된다. 이에 본 연구는 출산과 양육에 내재된 영적 의미를 회복함으로써 중요성을 재발견하고자 한다. 이를 위해 칼빈의 ‘하나님의 자기조절(accommodatio Dei)’ 개념을 통해 ‘자기-확장’적으로 왜곡되었던 에릭슨의 생성성을 재개념화함으로써, ‘자기-비움’의 원리로 출산과 양육을 재해석하고자 한다. 이러한 맥락에서 출산과 양육은 신체, 심리, 사회문화적 차원에서 여성의 영적 성장과 성숙 촉진의 중요한 과정이 될 수 있다. 또한 제임스 로더(James Loder)의 변형화 모델을 응용하여, 출산 여성의 실존적 고통을 영적 성장으로 변형시킬 가능성을 제안한다. 더불어 기독교교육적 앎의 과정을 잉태-출산-양육의 과정으로 형상화하는 영성교육 모델로서 '엄마됨' 모델(Mothering Model)을 제안한다. 은혜-비움-신비-관계-헌신의 다섯 단계로 구성된 모델은 출산한 여성뿐 아니라 출산을 경험하지 않은 기독교인들의 영적 성장과 성숙에도 도움과 통찰을 제공하게 될 것이다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to examine women's childbearing experience as a dimension of spiritual growth and maturity and to propose a Christian educational model. Although childbirth and childrearing exert a powerful influence on women's lives in midlife and play a crucial role in the formation of identity, they have been studied as theological symbols of blessing or nurturing regardless of the context of women's lives. Therefore, this study begins by analyzing Erik Erikson's concepts of inner space and generativity to focus on women's motherhood experience. By affirming women's inner space, he interprets the experience of childbirth as a woman's creative possibility, and generativity is formed. Initially, Erikson proposed generativity as a broad concept that encompasses productivity and creativity, including procreativity, which refers to giving birth to and nurturing the next generation. However, as a result of later scholars' male-biased interpretations, it has tended to be reduced to productivity in the economic sense. In the original sense of generativity, a kind of sacredness was implied in childbirth and childrearing, but this was gradually deconstructed and understood as a private and functional dimension, and today childbirth and childrearing are viewed from an economic perspective. These trends are found in physical, psychological, sociocultural, and faith community contexts. This study seeks to rediscover the importance of childbirth and parenting by recovering the spiritual meaning inherent in them. To do so, it reconceptualizes Erikson's generativity with Calvin's concept of God's accommodation to reinterpret childbirth and parenting in terms of the principle of self-emptying. In this context, childbirth and childrearing can be important processes for promoting women's spiritual growth and maturation at the physical, psychological, and sociocultural levels. Applying James Loder's model of transformation, we propose the possibility that the existential suffering of women in childbirth can be transformed into spiritual growth. In addition, this study proposes a "mothering model" that characterizes the process of Christian educational knowing as a process of procreation, birth, and nurture. The five stages of the model-grace-emptiness-numinous-relationship-commitment-offer insight and support for the spiritual growth and maturity of women who have given birth, as well as for Christians who have not experienced childbirth.
