세심에서 영적 자유로의 길: 영적 식별의 관점에서 살펴본 『영신수련』의 세심에 관한 해석학적 고찰 (From Scruples to Spiritual Freedom: A Hermeneutic Study on Scruples in the Spiritual Exercises from the Perspective of Spiritual Discernment)

초록

본고는 영신수련의 세심(Scruples)에 관한 주(註)를 영적 식별의 관점에서 살펴보고 창조적 적용의 가능성을 연구한다. 세심에 관한 최근 논문들은 주로 심리학과 정신 의학의 연구 대상으로 수행되고 있다. 특히 현대의 강박증에 관한 연구들은 세심(Scrupulosity)과 종교성의 상관성을 밝히고 병리학적 증상을 치유하고자 하는 시도를 해 오고 있다. 반면에 신학 분야에서는 영적 식별의 문맥에서 세심을 통합적으로 이해하려는 연구는 거의 이루어지고 있지 않다. 이에 본고는 해석학적 문제의식을 갖고 방법론적 질문을 하고자 한다. 롤랑 바르트(Roland Barthes)의 텍스트 이론과 피터 한스 콜벤바흐(Peter-Hans Kolvenbach)의 창조적 충실성 개념을 적용한다. 두 가지 이론을참고하여, 세심을 정신 의학적 측면에서만 다루는 것이 아니라 텍스트와 저자와 독자의 상호 관계의 탐구를 통하여 이를 하느님 체험으로서 밝힌다. 본고는 세 가지 흐름으로 구성된다. 첫째, ‘텍스트 뒤의 세계’(The World behind the Text)이다. 여기서는 세심에 관한 문헌의 저자인 이냐시오의 『자서전』을 통해 하느님 체험을 탐구한다. 이냐시오의 하느님 체험은 의심과 불안에서 해방으로 건너가는 영적 자유의 은총 체험이다. 하느님의 자비가 이 해방을 가능하게 했다. 둘째, ‘텍스트의 세계’(The World of the Text)로서 『영신수련』의 세심에 관한 주와 데레사 레하데야 수녀에게 보낸 편지를 연구한다. 『영신수련』은 이냐시오가 하느님을 만나는 길을 보여 주는 문헌으로 독자의 하느님 체험을 가능하게 해 주는 열린 텍스트이다. 레하데야 수녀에게 보낸 편지는 이냐시오가 『영신수련』의 식별 규칙들과 세심에 관한 주를 어떻게 창조적으로 적용하는가에 관한 예를 구체적으로 보여 준다. 셋째, 오늘날 독자들의 하느님 체험을 가능하게 하는 ‘텍스트 앞의 세계’(The World in front of the Text)로서의 이해를 모색한다. 세심에 관한 주는 원래의 문자적 의미에서 확장되어 나르시시즘이나 완벽주의의 의미로 이해될 수 있다. 또한 하느님 체험의 문맥에서 영적 자유로 나아가도록 돕는 영적 식별의 초대일 수도 있다. 이처럼 본고는 저자와 텍스트와 독자가 씨줄과 날줄처럼 엮여서 제직(製織)되는 상호 작용을 드러낸다. 그리고 이 상호 작용의 과정을 통해서 독자의 하느님 체험을 가능케 하는 근본적인 동인인 하느님의 자비와 사랑을 밝히고자 한다. 따라서 본고에서는 세심을 영적 식별의 전망에서 살펴봄으로써 하느님 체험의 가능성을 탐구하고자 한다.

영어초록

This paper examines the notes concerning scruples in the Spiritual Exercises from the perspectives of spiritual discernment and explores the possibility of their creative applications. Recent research papers on scruples have focused mainly on psychological and psychiatric theories, with studies on OCD(Obsessive-Compulsive disorder) attempting to identify the relationship between scrupulosity and religiosity and deal with its pathological symptoms. However, very little theological research has been done on an integral understanding of Ignatius’s notes in the context of spiritual discernment. This paper raises a methodological question in the context of a hermeneutic problem, applying the text theory of Roland Barthes and the concept of creative fidelity of Peter-Hans Kolvenbach. Mindful of both ideas, the study investigates scruples not only from a psychiatric point of view, but also in terms of interaction between text, author, and reader as an Experience-of-God. The paper has three parts. Firstly, it investigates the world behind Ignatius’s text. Using his Autobiography, it studies his own experience-of-God as the author of the notes on scruples, a graced experience of spiritual freedom by which he passed from doubt and restlessness to liberation. God’s mercy made this possible. Secondly, this paper considers the Spiritual Exercises and Ignatius’s letter to Sister Teresa Rejadell as a window to the world of the text of the Exercises. The Spiritual Exercises shows a pathway to God in the form of an open text that makes possible for each reader to experience God. The letter to Sister Rejadell gives an concrete example of how Ignatius creatively applies the rules of discernment and the notes on scruples. Thirdly, the paper explores the world in the light of the text, which can help today’s readers to experience God. In an extension of their original meaning, the notes on scruples can be understood as involving narcissism or perfectionism. But they are actually an invitation of spiritual discernment to help us move towards spiritual freedom in the context of our Experience-of-God. On the whole, the present paper attempts to show how the author, the text, and the reader are interwoven as the warp and woof of the whole fabric. It seeks to identify God’s mercy and love as revealed in that interwoven interaction and show how this plays an important role in the Experience-of-God of the readers. It aims to explore the possibility of the Experience-of-God by examining scruples from the perspectives of spiritual discernment.
