『법원주림(法苑珠林)』 권제6(卷第六) 육도편(六道篇) 귀신부(鬼神部)의 구성과 특징 - 감응연을 중심으로 (The Characteristics and the Structure of chapter 4 "The Six Realms of Rebirth” “Ghosts and Spirits” of the Fayuan Zhulin–With a Focus on Miracle Stories)

초록

본고는 당대(唐代)에 편찬된 중국의 대표적인 불교유서인 『법원주림(法苑珠林)』 권6의 육도편(六道篇) 제4 귀신부(鬼神部)의 편찬 구조를 분석하였다. 이를 통하여 귀신부 마지막 부분에 있는 감응연(感應緣) 배열의 의도를 살펴보고자 하였다.
육도편에는 ‘육도(六道)’에 당연히 있어야 할 ‘아귀부(餓鬼部)’가 아니라 그 대신에 귀신부를 두고 있다. 즉, 중국에는 불교가 전래되기 이전부터 독자적인 귀(鬼)와 명계(冥界)에 관한 관념과 문화가 오래 동안 축적되어 왔기 때문에 그러한 전통적 관념과 문화를 무시하고 불교적 개념만을 바탕으로 한 아귀부(餓鬼部)를 편찬하는 것은 불가능하였을 것이다. 귀신이라는 상위 개념 속에 육도 중의 아귀를 넣고, 불교 이전부터의 전통적인 명계관과 불교적 명계관 양쪽을 포괄하는 ‘귀신부’를 세운 것으로 보인다.
귀신부 감응연은 우선 아귀와 명관(冥官)이라는 두 종류의 귀신이 연속하여 등장하는 「송 사마문선(宋司馬文宣)」 설화로 시작된다. 이어서 조령(祖靈)으로서의 귀신이 사람에게 명계를 보여주면서 불교에 귀의할 것을 말하는 「송 왕호(宋王胡)」 이야기를 배치하였다. 다음으로 그 두 이야기의 주제를 반복하면서 불교에 의한 구제를 더욱 강조한 「송 이단(宋李旦)」 설화와 마찬가지로 시작 부분의 두 이야기의 주제를 역사상 인물의 설화로 반복한 「영양 정선지(滎陽鄭鮮之)」를 배치하여 불교 설화적 의의를 좀 더 명확히 하였다. 그리고 전통적인 명계관과 불교적 명계관의 융합을 통하여 새로운 귀신의 형상을 그려낸 「당 목인천(唐眭仁蒨)」으로 『법원주림(法苑珠林)』 권6 육도편 제4 귀신부 감응연(感應緣)의 불교설화 부분을 정리하였다.

영어초록

This study analyzes the compilation structure of chapter 4 "The Six Realms of Rebirth” (六道篇第四) “Ghosts and Spirits” (鬼神部) of the Fayuan Zhulin (法苑珠林 Forest of Gems in the Garden of the Dharma) fascicle 6 (卷六), which is a representative Chinese Buddhist text published in the Tang Dynasty. By doing so, it explains the intention of the arrangement of Miracle Stories (感應緣) at the end of "Ghosts and Spirits" (鬼神部).
“The Six Realms of Rebirth” in Fayuan Zhulin does not contain the expected Fascicle of Hungry Ghosts (餓鬼部), but instead has the Fascicle of Ghosts and Spirits. In other words, indigenous concepts and cultures about ghosts and the netherworld had accumulated for a long time before Buddhism was introduced to China, and it would have been impossible to compile the Fascicle of Hungry Ghosts based solely on Buddhist concepts while ignoring the traditional ghost culture. Hungry ghosts (餓鬼 egui, Sk. preta) seem to have been added to the category of ghosts, and the Fascicle of Ghosts and Spirits seems to have been established which encompasses both traditional and Buddhist views of the netherworld.
The specific contents and composition of “Ghosts and Spirits” Miracle Stories (感應緣) begins with the Sima Wenxuan of the Song Dynasty (宋司馬文宣) story, where the hungry ghosts (餓鬼) and netherworld officers (冥官 mingguan) appear in succession. The Wang Hu of the Song Dynasty (宋王胡) follows, where ghosts as ancestral spirits show the netherworld to people and tell them to return to Buddhism. Next, like Li Dan of the Song Dynasty (宋李旦), who repeated the themes of the two stories and emphasized salvation through Buddhism while repeating, Zheng Xianzhi of Yingyang (滎陽鄭鮮之), who repeated the themes of the two stories at the beginning as mythical historical characters, was placed to clarify the significance of Buddhist tales. In addition, the Buddhist tale of Miracle Stories was summarized with Mu Renqian of the Tang Dynasty (唐睦仁蒨), which depicts a new ghost form by combining traditional and Buddhist views of the netherworld.
Fayuan Zhulin Fascicle 6, “the Six Realms of Rebirth” (六道篇) of “Ghosts and Spirits” (鬼神部) connects the themes of the tale from Miracle Stories in succession and offers an accurate representation of the theme of "convergence" by combining the traditional and the Buddhist view of the netherworld, and combining ghosts as netherworld officers and hungry ghosts suffering from sin.
