古代의 譯人 - 덕흥리 벽화고분 <太守來朝圖>의 여성 통역관의 발견과 관련하여 - (Interpreters in the Ancient Times)

초록

언어와 문화·역사가 서로 다른 국가와 민족 간에 정치·경제·문화를 교류하는 장면에서 빼 놓을 수 없는 인물이 바로 역관(譯官)이다. 이러한 역관을 양성하고 공급하는 학문을 역학(譯學)이라 한다. 우리나라는 고려시대부터 조선시대까지 국가에서 외국어의 통역과 번역에 관한 일을 관장하고 역관을 양성하였다. 삼국시대와 고려시대에도 대외 관계가 활발하게 이루어졌으므로 역학과 그 교육도 성행했을 것으로 추측되나 기록이 많이 남아 있지 않다. 역학 관련 제도의 변화와 관직명 등을 통해 그 단편적인 모습을 추측할 뿐이다.
우리가 고대의 역사적 사실을 알아내는 방법에는 문헌의 기록을 통해서도 가능하지만, 비문헌자료를 통해서도 가능하다. 이 연구는 『삼국사기』 등 남아 있는 문헌 자료 기록과 묘지명, 고분 벽화의 묵서명 등 비문헌자료를 통해 대외 통역에 관계한 역인(譯人)에 대하여 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 『삼국사기』에는 주로 역학 관련 기관의 설치에 관한 기록이 남아 있어서 領客典과 倭典, 詳文師 등에서 외교에 관한 업무와 교육을 했음을 알 수 있고, 중국 소재의 묘지명을 통해 고구려 유민이 중국으로 건너가 역관의 일을 담당했던 사실을 알 수 있었다. 특히 평안남도 남포 소재 고구려 덕흥리 고분의 묵서에서는 이미 5세기 초에도 고구려에서는 通事吏라는 관직을 따로 두고 통역을 했으며, 특히 여성에게도 공적인 신분으로 통역의 일을 맡겼다는 사실을 알게 되었다

영어초록

Interpreter is an indispensable figure in the economic, political, and cultural exchange among countries and peoples with different languages, cultures, and histories. And the academic discipline that trains and supplies such interpreters is translation studies. From the Goryeo period to the Joseon period, the state was in charge of interpretation and translation of foreign languages and trained interpreters. During the Period of Three Kingdoms and the Goryeo period, which were actively engaged in international relations, we can presume that translation studies and education in the field thrived, of which there remains not many records. We can only get a fragmentary configuration of the system related to translation studies through its changes and the names of public offices.
We can verify the historical facts from the ancient times not only through written records but also non-literary materials. The purpose of the study is to examine the interpreters who were involved in international interpretation through extant written records such as Samguksagi (‘The Chronicles of the Three States’), tomb inscriptions, and ancient tomb murals, and texts written in Chinese ink. Through Samguksagi, which mainly includes records about the installation of agencies related translation studies, we can see that Yeonggaekjeon, Oejeon, and Sangmunsa handled tasks and training in foreign diplomacy. And through the epitaphs found in China, we can see that the descendants of the Goguryeo dynasty moved to China and served as interpreters. And from the texts written in ink which were discovered in the ancient tombs of the Goguryeo dynasty in Deokheung-ri, we see that as early as the early 5th century, Goguryeo had a government office called Tongsari for translation service, and that notably, the dynasty even assigned the official duty of interpretation to women.
