    This paper takes a view on the relationship between village schools teachers and students immediately before 1894 through the case of village teacher Jeon Bong Jun who lived in Gobu(古阜), Jeolla Province and village student Park Mun Gyu(朴文圭 )who lived in a neighboring village and was taught by Jeon Bong Jun(全琫準). The process in which village teacher Jeon Bong Jun was transformed into a leader of the Peasant War was also examined.
    Jeon Bong Jun wandered around Taein and Gochang regions before settling in Gobu, where he opened a village school to begin the life as a teacher. Since he owned some land and continued to operate the village school here, he was able to become well settled among livelihood type village school teachers. Park Mun Gyu, a student from neighboring Seokji village, learned about writings for children such as the Thousand-Character Classic since he was 8 years old at the village school of Jeon Bong Jun. He had a respect for his teacher and vivid memory about Jeon Bong Jun. However, he visited other village schools and teachers to learn more advanced writings like the Seven Chinese Classics as he grew up. Accordingly, the relationship between them was not maintained any longer.
    On one hand, educational activities of Jeon Bong Jun as a village school teacher did not have strong relationship with his social activities. Park Mun Gyu, a student of Jeon Bong Jun, did not follow Jeon Bong Jun during the Gobu Uprising and Peasant War. Perhaps Park was too young or passive to participate, but he had considerable respect for Jeon Bong Jun.
    Jeon Bong Jun got along with the village people while he was a village school teacher and was acknowledged by people to have moral influence. This is probably why he was selected as Jangdu(the first person to be written on the list of appellants) in the appealing process of 1893. Jeon Bong Jun led the uprise because he was already devoted to Donghak(東學) and was a Donghak leader(接主) of Gobu, but his moral influence had an important impact the village people. A writing of Park Mun Gyu provides an answer to this matter. When the ‘peasant army’ gathered at Malmok Marketplace at dawn, the government commanded them to break up. However, massive group of village people participated to protect the peasant army because ‘Jangdu would die if the people break up.’ Whatever the idea of Jeon Bong Jun might have been, most peasants remembered him as the ‘traditional Jangdu’.
