한국이 만난 개신교 140돌을 맞아 한국인문사회과학회가 마련한 학술 모임에서 발표한 이 글은, 내가 학계에 몸담아온 지난 50년 동안 한국 개신교를 두고 논했던 바를 되돌아보며 오늘의 문제 상황에 대한 풀이를 덧붙인다. 개신교의 역사는 초월 믿음에 터한 ‘비판-변혁 지향성’과 현존 질서에 터한 ‘예속-순응 지향성’의 변주곡이다. 19세기 끝 무렵 조선이 만난 개신교는 조선의 체제를 떠받치는 종교가 아니라 체제 변혁을 지향한 ‘새 종교’였다. 조선 사회는 이 종교에서 모든 것을 ‘초월’하는 새로운 권위의 실체를 찾았고, 이에 터하여 현실 체제를 있는 그대로 받아들이지 않고 새롭게 바꾸어야 한다는 깊은 동기도 찾았다. 개신교는 조선의 인간관과 사회의식을 재구성해야 한다는 변혁 세력으로 역사의 마당에 들어섰다. 이 변혁의 구조는 초월 신앙과 현실 체제 사이의 긴장과 대립으로 짜여 있었다. ‘초월 돌파’에 헌신할 때는 체제 변혁의 위력을 떨치고, ‘현실 집착’에 헌신할 때는 체제 강화의 세력을 이루었다. 기독교가 체제 주변부에 있을 때는 초월 신앙 노선을 드러내었고, 체제 중심부로 옮아가면서 체제 유착의 노선으로 돌아섰다. 오늘날 개신교의 초월 신앙 전통은 쇠잔해지고 있다. 체제에 흡수-포섭되어 이의 변호-유지 세력을 자처하는 체제의 부품으로 소금의 맛을 잃어버렸고, 있으나 마나 한 무의미한 집단으로 내려앉았다. 이 글은 세속 집착 지향성을 돌파하기 위한 비판과 성찰을 제안하며 마무리한다.

영어초록

This article, originally presented at the conference organized by the Korean Association of Humanities and the Social Sciences on the occasion of the 140th anniversary of the Protestant Church in Korea, reflects on my writings about the Protestant Church in Korea over the course of my half-century academic career, and highlights the Church’s problematic situation today. The history of Protestantism is a variation of the “criticism-transformation orientation” based on transcendent faith and the “subordination-conformity orientation” based on the belief in the existing order. In the closing years of the 19th century, the Christian religion that Joseon encountered was not the one that supported the Joseon system, but a “new religion” with a transformative orientation. In this religion, Joseon society found a new reality of authority that “transcended” everything, and it also found a deep motivation to change the existing system instead of accepting it as it is. Protestantism entered the field of history as a transformative force that demanded the restructuring of Joseon’s view of humanity and social consciousness. The structure of this transformation was framed by tensions and confrontations between transcendent faith and the existing system. When Christianity devoted itself to “transcendental breakthrough,” it showed off the power of system change, and when it devoted itself to “clinging to the existing reality,” it became instead the force of strengthening the system. When Christianity was on the periphery of the system, it revealed the line of transcendent faith, but when it moved towards the center of the system, it became attached to the system. Today, the Protestant tradition of transcendent faith is in decline. The Church has lost its saltiness, being absorbed and subsumed into the existing system, and it has reduced to a meaningless entity. This article concludes by suggesting that we engage in critical reflection in order to break through from the Church’s obsession with worldly orientation.
