청도지역의 견훤전승과 사실 또는 형상의 역사 (The History of the Facts or Figures seen in Kyeunhuen(견훤) Legends of Cheongdo)

초록

청도지역의 견훤관련 전설은 소략한 편이지만 신라 왕경과 경계인 운문면에 분포한 데다 흥미로운 변이를 보여주고 있어, 전설과 역사의 관계 해명에서 유의미한 사례가 될 수 있다. 이 연구에서는 대체로 세 가지 관점에서 이 주제를 다루었다. 하나는 전설의 전승과 분포 자체가 역사적 사실의 반영임을 확인하는 것이고, 둘은 전설적 사실들이 기록에서 부재하는 역사를 부분이나마 보완할 수 있는가를 탐색하는 것이며, 마지막으로는 전설의 전승과정에서 이루어진 형상과 구조의 역사, 그 역사적 진실의 실체에 다가가 보는 것이다.
우선 청도는 신라 왕경의 기전(畿甸) 지역으로 왕경의 수호를 위해 서기정(西畿停)이 배치되어 있던 곳이다. 또한 전설군이 채록된 운문면 신원리는 왕경의 서쪽 경계지역으로 일찍부터 한반도 서남부에서 이곳으로 들어가는 교통로가 개척되어 있었다. 따라서 나말려초 후백제와 고려가 경상도 공략에 힘을 쏟았을 당시, 이 지역에서도 공략과 교전이 이루어졌을 가능성이 없지 않다. 전설 전승의 사실 자체가 그러한 가능성을 담보하고 있다.
『삼국유사』의 ‘견성싸움’ 기사는 당시 청도지역의 전쟁사를 읽는 데 결정적인 단서가 된다. 태조는 이 싸움을 계기로 선종계열의 승려 보양과 밀양 호족 손긍훈 장군과의 삼자 연대를 통해 작갑사[운문사]를 중창하고 청도지역을 우회적으로 공략한 것으로 보인다. 이에 비해 견훤의 경우는 견성싸움 기사의 ‘산적’ 외에는 달리 공략을 읽을 만한 어떤 단서도 없다. 견훤이 쌓았다는 지룡산성이 이 미궁의 역사를 풀어줄 수 있는 유일한 코드이다. 당시 후백제와 고려간에 벌어진 전쟁사의 흐름을 따라가 보면, ‘견훤의 지룡산성 축조’와 ‘태조의 운문사 중창’은 청도지역에서 이루어진 양국간의 대립적 공략을 상징적으로 말해주는 사건임을 알 수 있다. 다만 승자의 비호를 받은 운문사는 고려조 이래 사세가 크게 확장된 데 비해, 패자의 지룡산성은 거의 무너진 채 몇 편의 전설로 그 역사적 기억을 전하고 있을 뿐이다.
한편으로, 견훤전승이 담아낸 역사적 진실은 나말려초의 사실적 역사에 머무르지 않는다. 사실적 기억은 전설의 전승과정에서 형상화되고 구조화되는 경향이 강하다. 이 지역의 견훤전승에서는 후백제 왕 견훤이 점차 망각되고 지렁이 또는 ‘지룡’으로 바뀌는 현상이 나타난다. 지룡의 언표와 형상은 지렁이를 용신격으로 인식한 결과이다. 그러나 이 지역유형의 지룡은 신이한 능력으로 거사 도모를 위해 산성을 쌓았지만 그 정체가 노출되어 실패하는 존재이다. 이렇게 지렁이/지룡의 정체 노출－거사 실패의 구조가 두드러지면서 동 지역의 이무기전승과도 접맥되는 흥미로운 변이가 나타난다. 때로 지룡이나 이무기의 실패가 죽음으로 끝나지 않고 이주나 잠행으로 유보되는 변이도 확인되는데, 이는 민중의 정신세계가 자주 패배한 영웅의 재귀나 귀환을 기대하는 것과 무관하지 않다. 이러한 민중적 세계관이야말로 전설적 형상과 구조를 통해 드러날 수 있는 역사적 진실이다.

영어초록

There are not many legends related to Kyeunhuen in Cheongdo, but it seems to be a meaningful example in explaining the relationship between legend and history in that it shows interesting variations. This study covered this topic from generally three perspectives. The first is to confirm that the distribution of legends is a reflection of historical facts. The second is to explore how legendary facts can partially supplement the absence of history. Finally, we will look closer at the history of the figures and structure made in the legendary tradition.
First of all, Cheongdo was the nearest area of the Capital of Shilla, and there was a corps for protecting the Capital. Yunmoon area in Cheongdo, where legends are recorded, was the western boundary of the Capital of Shilla, where a traffic route from the southwestern part of the Korean peninsula was pioneered. Therefore, I think that post Baekje and Goryeo were troubled about the attack on this area, and there would be actually some battles between the two countries. We can see it from the fact that related legends are handed down in this area.
The record of the ‘Battle in the ‘Kyeun Castle’(견성싸움)’ of “Samguk Yusa(삼국유사)” is a crucial clue to reading the history of war in Cheondo. As a result of this fight, Taejo(태조) cooperated with Bongyang, a monk of the Zen sect family, and General Shon Kunghoon, a nobleman of Miryang, to build a Yunmunsa temple and made it the base for a roundabout attack to Cheondo. On the other hand, Kyeunhuen’s attack has no other clues other than the expression of ‘bandit’ in articles of the the Battle in the ‘Kyeun Castle’. The only code that can unlock the history of this labyrinth is remains and legends about the Castle of the earth Dragon’ (지룡산성) which was built by Kyeunhuen. Following the flow of the war history between post Baekje and Koryo at that time, it can be seen that the construction of Castle of the earth Dragon and the construction of Yunmunsa Temple by Taejo symbolize the confrontational attacks between the two countries in Cheongdo region. Yunmunsa, which received the victory of the winner, has greatly developed as a large temple since Goryeo, while Castle of the loser has been ruined with several legends.
However, the historical truths of Kyeunhuen’s legends are not limited to complementing the real history of the time. The memory of fact tends to be shaped and structured in the tradition of legend. In Kyeunhuen’s legends of Cheongdo, Kyeunhuen as King of the post Baekjae was forgotten, instead it was transformed into earthworm or was shaped as an ‘earth dragon’.
There is an ambivalent perception about earthworms, but the figure of the earth dragon means a God dragon. The dragon has built a Castle for revolution with its superior ability, but the identity was exposed and faied. In addition, legends of the region show a structure in which the revolution was failed due to the exposure of identity, and there are interesting variations that are wedged and mixed with the Imugi legends (이무기 전설) of the same area.
Sometimes the failure of an earth dragon or Imugi does not end with death, but shows up as an immigration or a hiding, because the spirit of the people expects the recurrence or return of the defeated hero. I think this popular world view is the historical truth that can be revealed through the legendary figures and structure These variants identified in the Cheongdo area may not be easily understood, because the Kyeunhuen has been recognized as negative since the Goryeo reunification. These variations can be understood in the context of the regional history of the dispute over the possession of the Yunmunsa temple given by the patronage of Taejo and of the revolt for the revival of Silla or the anti-Goryeo.
