흥천사 극락보전의 재건역(再建役)과 장엄(莊嚴)에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Recnstruction and Jangeom of Heungcheon-sa Geungnakbojeon-hall)

초록

흥천사에는 대웅전 중창 이전 두 시기에 걸쳐 각기 다른 법당이 세워져 있었다는 사실이 2016년 극락보전을 수리할 때 나온 3건의 지본 상량문으로 확인되었다. 현 흥천사(興天寺) 극락보전(極樂寶殿)은 1853년(철종 4) 3월에 완공되었는데, 1854년 4월에 단청을 하고 나서 적은 상량문에는 ‘신흥사대웅전(新興寺大雄殿)’이라고 적혀 있다. 또 1885년(고종 22)에 건물 내부를 중수할 때에는 ‘흥천사 극락보전’으로 기록하였다. 신흥사가 흥천사로 바뀐 때는 1865년(고종 2), ‘대웅전’이 ‘극락보전’으로 바뀐 때는 아미타불회도를 봉안한 1867년인 듯하다. 그런데 사명(寺名)과 전호(殿號)는 그 뒤에도 지속적으로 혼용되었다.
현재 극락보전 내부에는 1867년에 조성된 불단에 삼존상, 후불벽에 아미타불회도, 좌우 측벽과 불단 우측 뒷벽에 여러 불화들이 가득 봉안되어 있다. 이들 가운데 우협시보살상은 사중에 전래되어 온 것이나, 본존상과 좌협시보살상은 다른 사찰에서 옮겨온 것이다. 후불벽에 봉안된 아미타불회도와 좌우 측벽과 불단 향우측벽에 봉안된 여러 불화들은 대방을 중창한 지 2년 뒤인 1867년(고종 4)에 조성하여 봉안한 것이다. 천개는 1900년에 단청을 중수할 때 새로 만들어 올린 것이다.
현재 극락보전의 내외 장엄, 구조와 장식, 형식과 양식에 커다란 변화가 일어날만한 계기는 없었던 것으로 판단된다. 따라서 흥천사 극락보전은 19세기 중엽을 대표하는 불전 건물로 보아도 무리는 없을 것이다. 19세기 후반에 50년 가까이 진행된 불사를 거치면서 크게 중흥된 흥천사에는 지금도 놀라울 만큼 많은 기록물들이 문서와 현판의 형태로 남아있다. 그러나 아직 완벽하게 조사가 이루어지지 못한 부분이 남아 있다.

영어초록

The fact that different Buddhist Main Halls were built in Heungcheonsa Monastery over two periods before the reconstruction of Daeungjeon Hall was confirmed by three Sangryangmun made of paper that came out when Geungnakbojeon Hall was repaired in 2016. The current Heungcheonsa Geungnakbojeon Hall was completed in March 1853 (King the 4th year of Cheoljong's reign), and the Sangryangmun, which was written after painting dancheong in April 1854, reads "Shinheungsa Daeungjeon." In addition, when the interior of the building was remodeled in 1885 (the 22nd year of King Gojong's reign), it was recorded as Heungcheonsa Geungnakbojeon. Sinheungsa was changed to Heungcheonsa in 1865, and Daeungjeon was changed to Geungnakbojeon in 1867, when the Amitābha Buddhist Painting was enshrined. However, even after the name of the temple and the name of main Buddhist Hall were changed, they were continuously used interchangeably.
Currently, the inside of Geungnakbojeon Hall is almost filled with Main Buddha statue of the altar, Amitābha Buddhist Painting on the back wall and various Buddhist paintings on the left and right sidewalls. Among them, the statue of Right Attendant Bodhisattva was handed down to this monastery, but the statue of Main Buddha Statue and the statue of Left Attendant Bodhisattva were moved from other temples. The Amitābha Buddhist Painting enshrined on the back wall and various Buddhist paintings enshrined on the left and right sidewalls and on the right sidewalls of the altar were painted and enshrined in 1867 (the 4th year of King Gojong's reign), two years after the construction of Daebang. The Canopy was newly built when Dancheong was repainted in 1900.
Currently, it is judged that there was no opportunity for major changes to the internal and external structure and decoration, form and style. Therefore, the Geungnakbojeon Hall of Heungcheonsa Monastery is a representative Buddhist monasyery building in the mid-19th century. Heungcheonsa Monastery, which was greatly revived after nearly 50 years of Buddhist reconstruction in the late 19th century, still has surprisingly many records in the form of documents and signboards. However, there are still record data that have not been fully investigated.
