남명학 연구 성과의 회고와 전망 : 외국의 연구 사례에 대하여 (A Review of Foreign Researchs on Nammyounghak Study)

초록

이 논문의 목적은 1980년대 이후 최근까지 이루어진 남명 및 남명학에 대한 외국 연구자의 업적과 성과들을 회고하고 정리하고자 하는 것이다. 우선 연구사의 검토와 정리에 앞서 외국 연구자의 연구는 방법론적으로 자국의 연구 동향을 일정 정도 반영하기 마련이라는 전제에 입각해 외국인 연구자의 대다수를 점하는 중국과 일본에 있어서의 유교 내지 유학에 대한 인식과 연구 동향에 대해 개략적으로 검토해보았다. 다음으로 본론에서는 다섯 분야로 나눈 주제별 분류를 통해 외국 연구자의 연구 동향을 비교ㆍ검토하는 방법을 취하였는데, 실천 유학자로서의 남명과 남명학의 실천성 문제, 실천 철학으로서의 남명학이 지니는 실학사상과의 연관성 문제, 성리학자로서의 남명의 정체성과 주자학과의 거리, 남명 사상과 도가 사상과의 상관성, 남명학의 연관 분야 및 남명학파와 남명학의 계승 양상 등이 그것이다. 이들 주제 가운데 남명학의 실천성 문제는 외국 연구자가 일찍이 주목하던 바로서 지속적인 관심을 끌면서 논의의 대상이 되어 왔다. 아울러 외국 연구자에게 있어서도 이러한 실천 철학으로서의 남명학에 대한 관심은 이후 실학사상과의 연관성에 있어서 더욱 강화된 형태로 나타났다. 남명학과 주자학의 관계에 대해서는 영향 관계를 강조하는 입장과 양자 사이의 거리를 강조하는 입장으로 나누어지는데, 후자의 입장은 남명학이 원시유학의 정신을 수용하였다는 절충적 관점에서 도가 사상과의 관계를 주목하는 견해로 발전하기도 하였다. 이렇듯 기존에 외국인 연구자에 의해 이루어진 남명학 관련 연구는 자국의 연구 동향을 반영하는 한편으로 국내의 연구 동향과도 영향 관계를 맺으면서 그 질량에 있어서 일정 정도 성과를 내었다고 평가할 수 있다. 그러나 향후 연구의 심화를 위해서는 연구자의 국제화를 위한 체계적 대책의 수립 및 연구 활성화를 위한 시급한 대책, 예를 들어 관련 자료의 정리 및 번역 출판 등의 과제가 중요함을 제안하였다. 아울러 국내의 남명학 연구가 기존의 남명 사상의 언설을 반복 진술하는 데에 그치지 않고 현실 사회에 공헌하는 길을 찾기 위해 현대 중국에서의 유학 연구 사례를 모색해 볼 것을 제안하였다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to retrospect and summarize foreign researchers’ achievements and performance on Nammyong and Nammyonghak study that they had performed until a recent data since the 1980s. First, prior to the review and summary of the foreign researchers, the study on the foreign researchers methodologically began with the premise that they reflected the research trends of their country to some extent. In this respect, this study examines foreign researchers’ awareness and research trends of Confucianism in both China and Japan where most of them live. Next, the body of this study takes measures to compare and review the research trends of foreign researchers through the theme-specific classification into five fields: practical issue of Nammyong as a practical Confucian and Nammyonghak study, association with Silhak thought that Nammyonghak study has as practical philosophy, identity of Nammyong as a neo-Confucian and his distance to Zhuism, correlation between Nammyong thought and Taoist thought, and Nammyonghak study-related fields and Nammyonghak school and Nammyonghak study’s succession patterns. Of these five themes, the practical issue of Nammyonghak study was early noted by foreign researchers and has been the subject of discussion, constantly receiving attention. At the same time, foreign researcher’s interests in this Nammyonghak study as a practical philosophy appeared in a more reinforced form in association with Silhak thought later. The relationship between Nammyonghak study and neo-Confucianism is divided into the position that focuses on the impact relation and the position that focuses on the distance between the twos. The latter’s position developed into the view that the Nammyonghak study focused on the relationship with Taoist thought from an eclectic perspective that Nammyonghak study accepted the spirit of primary Confucianism. Like this, it can be evaluated that the Nammyonghak study-related researches that’d been conducted by the existing foreign researchers reflected the research trends of their country, and on the other hand, achieved good results to some extent entering into a relation with our domestic research trends. However, to improve the level of the future researches, some urgent measures to establish systematic measures and activate researches for the internationalization of researchers, for example, the imp0rtance of summarizing relevant data and translation and publication is suggested. At the same time, it is also suggested that domestic researches on Nammyonghak study should search for research cases of Confucianism in modern China in order to look for a way to contribute to the real society without remaining in the stage of repeating and stating the discourse of the existing Nammyong thought.
