초록

In the early 20th century, the American writer Thomas Wolfe and the Korean American writer Younghill Kang published their first novels, Look Homeward, Angel and The Grass Roof. These two novels have common characteristics such as theme, structure and techniques of the works as well as being autobiographical novels as a literary genre. Autobiographical novel is a great art form to develop one's life stories in detail. In their works, the main theme the two writers focused on is self-recognition through describing 'life' itself. Wolfe and Kang write about 'life' filled with repetition of a moment in one's past. To do this, the two writers describe a great many relationships with other people and episodes of the protagonists recapturing the past in their lives.
Eugene in Look Homeward, Angel and Chungpa in The Grass Roof try to escape from the environment such as family, hometown and society that governs their lives. The result of their trials turns out a failure as they realize all the memories they have are actually the elements that shape their characteristics and the power that supports them. Wolfe's Eugene is greatly affected by the personal and genetic environment in his family while Kang emphasizes the social, cultural and historical environment in one's life. In each different environment, the protagonists recapture the past which represents all the relationships with other people and the experiences they had in their lives and finally realize who they are. Through this process, they accept the past that they wanted to forget and are made ready for the future.
