초록

Aestheticism is a European phenomenon during the late 19th century that had its chief headquarter in France. The root of this movement has the origin; a German philosopher Kant said in The Critique of Judgement that a pure aesthetic experience is in the act of contemplating an object disinterestedly free of external aim such as usefulness or moral. Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) is a representative man of letter to advocate English aestheticism movement. We usually know that Wilde's aestheticism leads to the conclusion in the famous preface of The Picture of Dorian Gray that "All art is quite useless"; that art is a source of pleasure or joy, has no relation to instructive content such as moral and religion, and further more to keep aloof from public virtues.
However, we need to ponder on the very concept of uselessness of art in Wilde. This article tries to make clear the aspects of public usefulness immanent in the theory of art in Oscar Wilde contrary to a generally accepted idea. In consequence The Picture of Dorian Gray emphasizes usefulness of art. Wilde is a man to investigate thoroughly "ethical beauty" where beauty and moral meet together like the two-sided coin.
