高句麗語 母音에 ‘’가 없었을까? - 고구려어 표음자의 蟹攝字 분석 (Reconstruction of Vowel /ʌ/ in the Goguryeon Language)

초록

이 글은 중세 한국어의 ‘’에 해당하는 모음이 高句麗語에도 있었는지를 논의하는 데에 목적을 둔다. 고구려어 전체 표음자 713자 중에서 陰聲韻尾 /*-i/를 가지는 60여 蟹攝字를 대상으로 삼아, 이들 중에서 韻腹에서만 음가 차이가 나고 나머지 음운론적 요소는 동일한 音韻對立 쌍을 찾아낸다. 이 음운대립 쌍은 운미 /*-i/의 바로 앞에 어느 모음이 올 수 있는지를 말해 준다.
그런데 蟹攝에 속하는 泰韻, 祭韻, 廢韻 등은 漢語 中古音의 성조가 항상 거성이다. 이 거성운모는 한어 上古音에서는 자음운미 즉 입성운미를 가졌지만 한어 중고음에서는 음성운미 /*-i/로 변화했다고 한다. 따라서 해섭자를 기술할 때에는 이 거성운모가 첫째로 자음운미를 가질 때와 둘째로 음성운미 /*-i/를 가질 때의 두 가지로 나누어 기술할 필요가 있다. 첫째의 기술에서는 해섭 운모의 운복이 二元對立을 이루므로 /*a/와 /*e/의 두 가지 모음이 설정된다. 그러나 둘째의 기술에서는 三元對立을 이루므로 이밖에도 제3의 모음이 필요하다. 이 제3의 모음은 중세 한국어의 ‘’에 대응하는 /*ʌ/이다.
고구려어는 주로 전기 중고음의 시기에 기록되었으므로 고구려어 음운체계를 논의할 때에는 둘째의 기술 방법을 택하는 것이 바람직하다. 따라서 중세 한국어의 ‘’에 해당하는 모음 /*ʌ/가 고구려어에도 있었다고 본다.

영어초록

At least sixty xièshè 蟹攝 phonographs containing the coda /*-i/ were used to transcribe proper nouns in the language of Goguryeo 高句麗 (BCE 37～CE 668). Pronunciations of these phonographs have minimal pairs that differ in their main vowel. By comparing these minimal pairs, we can determine how many phonologically opposed vowels can be reconstructed in front of a coda /*-i/. This paper examines these vowels and discusses whether the vowel corresponding to /ʌ/ in Middle Korean should be listed in the phonemic inventory of the Goguryeon language.
Phonographs in some xièshè rhymes such as tàiyùn 泰韻, jìyùn 祭韻, and fèiyùn 廢韻 are all pronounced with the qù tone 去聲 in Middle Chinese (MC). Many scholars argue that these rhymes must have been pronounced with the rù tone 入聲 in Old Chinese (OC), which is represented by a consonant ending. Therefore, xièshè phonographs in the Goguryeon language can be analyzed in two different ways based on their tones in MC and OC. First, if we classify tàiyùn, jìyùn, and fèiyùn as a rù tone rhyme as in OC, there is no example of minimal pairs differing in the main vowel among hāiyùn 咍韻, tàiyùn 泰韻, jiēyùn 皆韻, jiāyùn 佳韻, jìyùn 祭韻, and fèiyùn 廢韻 in the Goguryeon phonographs. Thus, a main vowel of all six of these rhymes can be reconstructed as an identical /*a/. On the other hand, there are several examples of minimal pairs between these rhymes and qíyùn 齊韻, which leads us to reconstruct another vowel /*e/ as a main vowel of qíyùn. In this binary opposition, only /*a/ and /*e/ can be reconstructed as a main vowel of xièshè rhymes.
However, if tàiyùn, jìyùn, and fèiyùn are classified as the qù tone rhyme as in MC, the third vowel is required for triple opposition. In this scenario, there are a couple of minimal pairs between these rhymes and hāiyùn that differ in the main vowel. This means that the main vowel of hāiyùn was phonologically distinct from the main vowel of tàiyùn, jiēyùn, and jiāyùn in the Goguryeon phonographs. Thus, another vowel opposing the /*a/ and /*e/ should be allotted to the main vowel of hāiyùn. High vowels or rounded vowels cannot be a main vowel of xièshè rhymes. However, described as [-high, +back, -round, -low], the third vowel /*ʌ/ is qualified as one of the main vowels of xièshè rhymes.
Because almost every Goguryeon phonograph borrowed MC pronunciation, this paper prefers the triple opposition to the binary one. In conclusion, this paper argues that /*ʌ/, which corresponds to Middle Korean /ʌ/, should be listed in the phonemic inventory of the Goguryeon language along with /*a/ and /*e/.
