외국어 평가시험 비교 연구, 한국어능력시험(TOPIK)과 이탈리아어능력시험(CILS) (Comparative study on foreign language evaluation tests Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) and Certification of Italian as a foreign language (CILS))

초록

본 논문은 한국어능력시험(TOPIK)과 이탈리아어능력시험(CILS)의 평가 기준과 평가 체제에 대해 비교분석하였다. 먼저 평가 기준은 유럽공통참조기준(CEFR)에서 제시한 총괄 척도 기준을 토대로 살펴보았다. 그리고 평가 체제는 의사소통적 언어능력을 평가하는 Bachman & Palmer (1996)가 제시한 ’시험 과제 특성 틀‘에서 물리적인 환경 체제에 대해 살펴보았다.
먼저 평가 기준을 살펴볼 때 TOPIK과 CILS는 모두 기초적인 언어사용 단계는 TOPIK 1급-2급, CILS A1-A2, 자립적 언어사용 단계는 TOPIK 3급-4급, CILS B1-B2, 숙달된 언어 사용 단계는 TOPIK 5급-6급, CILS C1-C2단계이다. CEFR기준을 같지만 TOPIK의 척도 기준은 내용을 이해하고 기능을 수행할 수 있는 능력에 좀더 중점을 두었고 CILS는 상호작용과 의사소통 능력 형성과정에 힘을 실었다는 것을 알 수 있다. 다음으로 Bachman & Palmer (1996)가 제시한 ’시험 과제 특성 틀‘을 기준으로 두 시험의 평가 체제를 살펴볼 때 평가 도구와 평가 영역의 수에서 차이를 보였다. TOPIK은 초급인 TOPIK Ⅰ과 중·고급인 TOPIK Ⅱ의 2종 6등급 체제이다. 반면에 CILS는 6종 6등급 체제이다. 평가 영역에 있어서도 차이를 보였다. TOPIKⅠ은 ’듣기‘, ’읽기‘ 영역을 평가하고 TOPIK Ⅱ는 ’듣기‘, ’읽기‘, ’쓰기‘ 영역을 평가하고 있고 쓰기 영역을 제외하고 모두 객관식 문제이다. 토픽과 별도로 말하기시험은 토익말하기평가가 시행되고 있으며 1급-6급을 통합 평가하고 있다. 반면에 CILS는 A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2까지 등급의 차등 없이 ’듣기‘, ’읽기‘, ’어휘·문법‘, ’쓰기‘, ’말하기‘의 5개 영역을 모두 평가하고 있고 문제 유형도 다양하다.
글로벌 시대를 맞이하여 외국어로서의 자국어숙달도평가시험의 중요성이 점점 높아지고 있다. 이 평가시험을 통해 얻은 자격증은 대학 진학은 물론이고 취업, 체류 비자에 이르기까지 큰 영향을 미치고 있다. 따라서 자국어숙달도평가시험뿐만 아니라 여러 나라의 평가시험에 대한 연구도 활발하게 진행되고 있으나 유럽언어권의 언어 평가에 대한 연구는 아직 미미한 실정이다. 이런 상황에서 양국의 국가어능력평가인 TOPIK과 CILS를 비교하는 것은 의미가 있다고 생각하며, 앞으로도 다양한 후속 연구가 진행되기를 바란다.

영어초록

This study analyzed the evaluation standards and evaluation systems of the Test of Proficiency in Korean(TOPIK) and the Certification of Italian as a Foreign Language (CILS). First, the evaluation criteria were examined based on the comprehensive scale standards presented by the Common European Framework of Reference(CEFR). And, as for the evaluation system, the physical environment system was examined in the ‘test task characteristics framework’ presented by Bachman & Palmer (1996), which is a model representing communicative language ability.
First, when looking at the evaluation criteria, for both TOPIK and CILS, the basic language use level is TOPIK level 1-2, CILS A1-A2, and the independent language use level is TOPIK level 3-4, CILS B1-B2, and proficient language use level is TOPIK levels 5-6 and CILS levels C1-C2. Although the CEFR standard is the same, TOPIK's scale standard focuses more on the ability to understand content and perform functions, while CILS focuses on the process of forming interaction and communication skills. Next, when examining the evaluation systems of the two tests based on the ‘test task characteristics framework’ presented by Bachman & Palmer (1996), there were differences in the number of evaluation tools and evaluation areas. TOPIK is a 2-type, 6-grade system: TOPIK Ⅰ for beginners and TOPIK Ⅱ for intermediate and advanced levels. On the other hand, CILS is a 6-type, 6-grade system. Differences were also seen in the evaluation area. TOPIK I evaluates the ‘listening’ and ‘reading’ sections, and TOPIK II evaluates the ‘listening’, ‘reading’, and ‘writing’ sections. Except for the writing section, all sections are multiple-choice questions. The topic speaking evaluation has been independently implemented since 2022 and is an integrated evaluation of grades 1 to 6. On the other hand, CILS evaluates all five areas of 'listening', 'reading', 'vocabulary/grammar', 'writing', and 'speaking' without any grade differentiation from A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, and C2. The types of problems are also diverse.
In the global era, the importance of tests to evaluate native language proficiency as a foreign language is increasing. The certification obtained through this evaluation test has a great influence not only on university admission but also on employment and residence visas, etc. Therefore, many studies are being actively conducted not only on native language proficiency evaluation tests but also on evaluation tests in various countries. However, the introduction of European language evaluation tests is not yet active. In this situation, I think it is meaningful to compare TOPIK and CILS, the two countries' national language proficiency evaluations and I hope that various follow-up studies will be conducted in the future.
