固有語와 漢字語의 調和 (The Harmony between Native Korean Words and Sino-Korean Words)

초록

본고는 한글과 漢字, 固有語와 漢字語의 상호 調和와 補完關係에 대하여 몇 가지 관점에서 확인하고자 하는 시도이다. 한국 文字史에 대한 오해와 편협한 視覺으로 한글과 漢字, 그리고 고유어와 한자어가 마치 愛國과 賣國의 관계인 양 인식하는 사람이 적지 않다. 그러므로 문자 發達史와 表記 방법론, 고유어와 한자어의 의미 영역 분화, 동시에 한자어에 의한 개념 영역의 확장 등에 대하여 역사적 자료를 확인하고자 한다. 그리하여 문자와 어휘 두 부문에 존재하는 兩 體系가 感性과 理性, 情緖와 思想을 담아내는 그릇으로, 절묘한 調和를 이루며 共存하고 있음을 論證하게 될 것이다.

영어초록

Native Korean words and Sino-Korean words, two roots in Korean vocabulary, are not in the opposite relation. but in the cooperative relation because they are worthy sources which make Korean words affluent. Hangul (the native alphabet of the Korean language) and Hanja (the Korean name for Chinese Character) are harmonious and supplement each other exquisitely in the history of characters and the function as characters. Since the antient times, Hanja has had its value in the history of character because it helped express the emotions and thoughts of our ancestors. Also, it has functional value because it supplements the weak points of the phonogram, namely, Hangul.
Hangul, a phonogram, is superb in the sensuous descriptions, but it has weaknesses in word coinage, interpretability and visuality which are the strong points of ideogram. By using Hanja, an ideogram, the weak points of Hangul are made up for completely. Likewise, native Korean words and Sino-Korean words have contrastive properties: while the former has the excellent function in the detailed sensuous descriptions and the expressions of the nuances between the words, the latter has the outstanding ability in the expressions of concepts and thoughts due to its capability of the limitless word coinage.
It is shown that the concepts of native Korean words which are limited in number and have broad meanings are classified in detail and specified using Hanja. It follows that the vocabulary of Korean increases and the level of the Korean culture improves to a great extent. Besides, even when the expansion of word meanings is necessary, using Hanja their meanings can be expanded and abstracted and, consequently, our thoughts can be broadened in this process. In both cases, we can find easily that the Korean language can be placed proudly as one of the world languages thanks to the cooperation between Hangul and Hanja.
In sum, Hangul and Hanja are both wings in writing the Korean language which supplement each other's flaws and function as the most valuable characters in the world. Hangul and Hanja, representative character systems in phonograms and ideograms, are in harmony ex- questingly and perform as ‘a container of including emotions and thoughts and sensitivity and reason'. Native Korean words and Sino-Korean words, too, supplement each other and have a role in making the Korean language become a superb language among the world languages.
In a word, the Korean language which can use both the phonogram and ideogram freely and both native Korean words and Sino-Korean words as the need arises, is ‘not cursed but blessed'.
