초록

본고의 목적은 최정희의 일제 말기 친일 소설을 치밀한 텍스트 분석을 통해 깊이 다시 읽음으로써 그 미학적인 특징을 규명하고, 본고가 구사한 방식이 친일문학 여부를 판단하는 소설 미학적인 방안을 도출하는 데 마중물이 되도록 제시하는 데 있다.
최정희 친일 소설의 경계와 특징에 대해서는 학계의 합의가 있어 온 편인데, 이 맥락에서 문제시되는 것은 두 가지이다. 「밤차」와 「천맥」을 친일 소설로 보는 일부의 규정이 하나인데, 소략한 검토를 통해서나마 그렇지 않음을 밝혔다. 보다 중요한 문제는 「장미의 집」과 「야국초」의 친일문학적인 특성을 약화시키는 영향력 있는 논의이다. 「장미의 집」을 페미니즘적으로 읽으면서 친일적인 내용을 도외시하는 극단적인 경우가 있고, 「야국초」를 섬세하고도 풍요롭게 읽으면서 친일문학 규정이 과하다고 주장한 예가 있다. 이 두 편의 소설에 대한 객관적인 소설 미학적 분석을 통해 그러한 주장들이 잘못되었음을 규명한 것이 본고의 주된 작업을 이룬다.
최정희의 친일 소설은 「야국초」와 「장미의 집」에, 「환의 병사」, 「2월 15일의 밤」, 「여명」, 「징용열차」 네 편의 소품이 더해져 총 6편이다. 이들 소설은 여성에 주목해 온 최정희 소설의 특성을 유지하되 그 핵심에 있어 여성성, 모성에서 군국의 모성으로 전화하여 친일문학계에서 나름의 몫을 확보한다. 이들 소설은 친일적인 주제를 드러내는 데 있어서 손쉬운 형식을 취하고, 소설 미학적으로 볼 때 구조적인 결함을 보이며, 소품이 많다는 특징을 보인다. 이런 특징은 최정희가 상황의 변화를 인정한 위에서 일제의 시책에 자발적으로 충실하게 부응한 결과로 보인다.
「야국초」와 「장미의 집」을 중심으로 일제 말기 최정희 소설의 친일문학적인 성격을 소설 미학적인 분석을 통해 객관적으로 밝히면서 이러한 결론을 이끌어 낸 데 본고의 의의가 있다. 본고의 분석 방법이 향후 친일문학 연구를 한 단계 진전시키는 데 시금석 역할을 하게 된다면 이야말로 본고의 궁극적인 의의가 될 것이다.

영어초록

The purpose of this paper is to scrutinize the aesthetic characteristics of Choi Jeong-hee’s pro-Japanese short stories in the 1940s by rereading them through strict text analysis and to present the analysis method of this paper as an academic method for judging whether a work is pro-Japanese literature.
The boundaries and characteristics of Choi Jeong-hee’s pro-Japanese literature have generally reached consensus within academic circles, but two issues remain contentious in this context. One is the classification of ‘Night Train(밤車)’ and ‘Cheonmaek(天脈)’ as pro-Japanese works, which this paper has demonstrated to be unfounded through a brief text examination. The more significant issue, however, concerns influential discussions that downplay the pro-Japanese literary characteristics of ‘Rose House[薔薇의 집]’ and ‘Yagukcho[野菊抄]’. In extreme cases, ‘Rose House’ is read through a feminist lens, overlooking its pro-Japanese elements, while ‘Yagukcho’ is analyzed in a nuanced and rich manner, with arguments suggesting that labeling it as pro-Japanese literature is excessive. The main task of this paper is to demonstrate, through objective aesthetic analysis of these two short stories, that such claims are erroneous.
Choi Jeong-hee’s pro-Japanese literature includes ‘Yagukcho’ and ‘Rose House’, along with four shorter works: ‘The Soldier of Illusion(幻의 兵士)’, ‘The Night of February 15(2月15日の夜)’, ‘Dawn(黎明)’, and ‘The Forced Labor Train(徵用列車)’, totaling six works. These pro-Japanese short stories maintain the characteristic of focusing on women, but at their core, they transform femininity and motherhood into the ‘motherhood of the military state’. This is where Choi Jeong-hui’s pro-Japanese works secure their place in the pro-Japanese literary world. These short stories take too casual a form of revealing pro-Japanese themes and show structural defects in terms of novel aesthetics. Another characteristic feature of Choi Jeong-hee’s pro-Japanese literature is that there are many morceaux. These characteristics seem to be the result of Choi Jeong-hui’s voluntary and faithful response to the Japanese colonial policies.
Focusing specifically on ‘Yagukcho[野菊抄]’ and ‘Rose House[薔薇의 집]’, this paper academically elucidates the pro-Japanese literary characteristic of Choi Jeong-hee’s short stories through an aesthetic analysis of them, ultimately drawing significant conclusions above mentioned. If the analytical approach of this paper serves as a touchstone for advancing future research on pro-Japanese literature, it would constitute the ultimate significance of this study.
