사회적 참사를 기억하고 애도하는 방식 고찰 -영화 〈악질경찰〉과〈생일〉을 중심으로- (A Study on How to Remember and Mourn Social Disasters: - Focusing on Jo Pil-ho: The Dawning Rage and Birthday -)

초록

세월호 참사가 발생한 지 7년여의 세월이 흘렀지만, 현재까지 제대로 된 진상규명은 이루어지지 않고 있다. 어떠한 사건이 온전한 기억이 되기 위해서는 그와 같은 사건이 일어나게 된 원인으로부터 시작하여 사후 처리에 이르기까지 논리적 체계를 갖춘 하나의 서사로 구성될 수 있어야 한다. 이러한 측면에서 놓고 볼 때 세월호 참사는 여전히 현재진행형이자 아직까지는 온전한 기억이 될 수 없는 사건이다.
세월호 참사의 진상규명이 지연되는 사이 사건은 정치 쟁점화되어 기억 투쟁이 일어남으로써 진상규명을 더욱더 어렵게 했다. 그러다 보니 지금까지 세월호 참사의 문화 기억화는 주로 당시 상황을 재현하여 진실에 다가가려고 하는 운동으로 나타났다. 이러한 상황에서 2019년 세월호 참사 5주기를 앞두고 이를 소재로 한 두 편의 상업 극영화 <악질경찰>과 <생일>이 비슷한 시기에 제작되면서 관심을 받았다. 이들 영화는 너무 이른 것이 아니냐고 하는 우려의 목소리 속에 2주의 격차를 두고 개봉하였는데 이에 대한 대중의 반응이 극명하게 엇갈려 주목되었다.
이 논문에서는 이와 같은 대중의 반응에 주목하여 경험 기억의 문화 기억화를 바탕으로 세월호 참사와 같은 사회적 참사가 서사 매체를 통해 문화적으로 재현될 때에는 어떠해야 하는지에 대해서 고찰해 보았다. 그 결과 <악질경찰>이 치기 어린 남성 주인공의 낭만적 영웅화에 주력하는 범죄 액션 영화의 장르 관습을, <생일>이 개인의 서사를 공동의 서사로 통합함으로써 공동체의 서사를 지향해나가는 가족 멜로드라마의 장르관습을 따르고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 더불어 이러한 장르적 관습에 따라 <악질경찰>은 주인공을 돋보이게 하기 위해 ‘악질경찰’과 세월호 참사 희생자들을 겹쳐 보이게 만듦으로써 그들을 기리고 애도하기보다는 오염시켰다는 혐의를 받을 수밖에 없었다. 이에 반해 <생일>은 여전히 세월호 참사가 일어난 그 시간 안에 머물고 있는 유가족들의 참사 이후의 삶을 멜로드라마의 관습에 따라 핍진하게 그려냄으로써 사회적 애도가 제대로 이루어지지 않은 상황에서 마음껏 울 수 있는 애도의 장을 마련하여 세월호 참사로 인한 우리 모두의 트라우마를 위무하였다.

영어초록

It has been seven years since the Sewol Ferry disaster, but a proper investigation has not been carried out until now. To ensure an event becomes a complete memory, one should be able to composed it as a narrative with a logical system, from the cause of the event to its post-processing. From this perspective, the Sewol Ferry disaster is still an ongoing incident that cannot be fully remembered yet.
As investigation into the truth about the Sewol Ferry disaster was delayed, the incident became a political issue and a memory struggle took place, making it even more difficult to determine the truth. In the meantime, cultural memorization of this disaster appeared as a movement to approach the truth by reproducing the situation at that time. Herein, ahead of the fifth anniversary of the Sewol Ferry disaster in 2019, two commercial feature films based on the disaster, Jo Pil-ho: The Dawning Rage and Birthday, were produced around the same time and attracted attention. However, there were voices of concern that it was too early to depict the disaster in film, and yet the two films were released about a month apart. The public’s reaction to these two films was remarkably different.
In this study, we focus on such public reaction and examine how a social disaster such as the Sewol Ferry disaster should be reproduced culturally through a narrative medium based on the cultural memorization of experiential memories. The analysis shows that Jo Pil-ho: The Dawning Rage follows the genre conventions of crime action films while focusing on the romantic heroization of an immature hero. Birthday, however, follows the genre conventions of a family melodrama and aims toward a community narrative-integrating an individual narrative into a common narrative; however, the genre conventions in this film are relatively weak.
Because of these genre conventions, Jo Pil-ho: The Dawning Rage was accused of polluting rather than honoring and mourning the victims because it seemingly overlaps the “bad cop” and victims of the disaster, as the title suggests, to ensure the main character stands out. In Birthday, the desperate life of a bereaved family during the time of the Sewol Ferry disaster and after was described according to the conventions of melodrama. In doing so, it was possible to relieve the trauma caused by this disaster by providing a place for social mourning where people could cry freely.
