초록

Focusing on Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlowe series and Dashiell Hammett’s novels, this paper aims to examine the representation of male homosexuality in hard-boiled detective fiction. It argues that the male homosexuals in hard-boiled detective fiction are represented not in terms of sexual desire, but of social class. The male homosexuals in hard-boiled detective fiction reveal high similarities with upper class males, in that both have a strong preference for finely tailored clothes, perfume, jewelry, luxurious surroundings and works of art. Hard-boiled detective novels link male homosexuality with villainy and punish the male homosexuals severely. The harsh punishment of the male homosexuals could easily be regarded as a manifestation of homophobia. This paper, however, interprets the punishment of male homosexuals in hard-boiled detective fiction as an attempt to suture class conflict by projecting animosity against the upper class vicariously on the sexual minorities. These hard-boiled detective novels reaffirm the dominant class ideology rather than challenge it.
