경성의 결절점: 식민지 시기 조선은행 앞 광장에 대한 연구 (The Node of Gyeongseong: A Study of the Plaza in Front of the Bank of Joseon under Japanese Rule)

초록

이 글은 조선은행(朝鮮銀行) 앞의 광장과 그 일대가 경성(京城)의 도시 이미지와 맺고 있는 관계를 논의하려는 시도이다. 조선은행 앞의 광장은 역사적으로 특수한 지점에 있다. 조선은행 앞의 광장은 한성(漢城)이 경성으로 전환되는 과정에서 만들어진 교통의 중심지이자 문명의 통로였다. 미츠코시백화점(三越百貨店)이 지어져 광장을 이루는 하나의 요소가 된 1930년대의 조선은행 일대는 경성을 대표하는 시가로 여겨지기도 했다. 이에 따라 본 연구에서 중점을 둔 것은 두 가지이다. 첫째, 조선은행 앞의 광장과 그 일대는 이른 시기부터 도로가 정비된 이후 문명 시설이 갖추어졌다. 둘째, 당대인들이 조선은행 앞 광장에 대하여 가진 복합적인 감정은 경성의 도시 이미지 형성과도 맞닿아 있다는 점이다. 당대인들은 조선은행 앞의 광장에서 극대화된 문명과 그로 인한 소외 모두를 마주할 수 있었다. 따라서 본고의 초점은 조선은행 앞의 광장이 이상과 현실이 중첩된 장소로서 경성의 도시 이미지의 한 단면임을 살피는 데에 있다.
조선은행과 남대문통(南大門通)을 중심으로 이루어진 조선은행 앞의 광장은 한성이 경성으로 바뀌는 과정에서 부상한 지역이다. 조선은행 앞을 지나는 가장 중요한 도로인 남대문통은 이른 시기부터 정비되었다. 그중에서도 남대문(南 大門)에서 조선은행으로 이어진 도로는 경성의 도시 계획이 본격적으로 시행된 1912년 이전부터 그 정비가 진행되었다. 이는 세 가지 상황에서 비롯되었다. 첫째, 남대문통은 일본인 거주지인 본정(本町, 혼마치)으로 이어졌기에 일본인들은 남대문통 일대의 정비에 주력했다. 둘째, 본정에 있던 조선총독부는 남대문 일대를 중심지로 만들고자 했다. 셋째, 남대문에서 조선은행 일대를 지나 경성으로 들어가는 도로는 문명의 통로로 만들어져야 했다. 이로 인해 남대문통이 지나는 조선은행 앞 광장은 점차 높은 건물, 반듯하고 넓은 도로, 밤에도 붉을 밝히는 전등 등으로 채워졌다.
1930년대에 들어 조선은행 앞 광장은 문명이 극대화된 번화가가 되었다. 이는 두 상황을 통해 비롯되었다. 첫째, 미츠코시백화점이 1930년대에 지어져 조선은행 앞 광장을 이루는 요소가 되었다. 당시 백화점, 특히 미츠코시백화점은 선망의 대상으로서 경성의 유행을 선도하며 도시문화를 이끌었다. 둘째, 조선은행 앞 광장이 번화가가 되자 교통난을 해결한 과정에서 그 일대는 다시 한번 정비되었다. 광장 가운데는 로터리 형식으로 만들어져 통행 방식이 바뀌었으며 분수대가 자리하며 작은 공원으로 꾸며졌다. 심지어는 지하도를 만드는 계획까지 진행되었다. 이 과정에서 조선은행 앞 광장은 경성의 중앙시가로 여겨지기도 했다.
그러나 당대인들의 조선은행 앞 광장에 대한 인식 및 반응은 한 방향으로만 귀결되지 않았다. 당대인들에게 조선은행 앞 광장은 근대 도시 경성으로 기대되는 장소이면서 동시에 문명의 그늘을 드러내는 장소이기도 했다. 조선은행 앞을 부유하는 부랑자들의 모습이 바로 그 예이다. 인텔리와 룸펜의 경계에서 관찰자라고 불린 이들조차도 조선은행 일대를 배회하며 광장에 쉽게 발을 디디지 못했다. 이는 당대인들의 인식 및 반응을 통해 만들어진 경성의 도시 이미지에서 조선은행 앞 광장이 이상과 현실 사이를 매개하는 결절점(結節點)과 같은 지역임을 알려준다.

This paper attempts to explore the relationship between the plaza in front of the Bank of Joseon and the city image of Gyeongseong (present-day Seoul). A plaza is an open space in the city and located at the center of urban culture. However, the plaza in front of the Bank of Joseon is an unusual area. The plaza, a hub of transportation, was the passage of civilization which was formed during the transitional period from Hanyang (the capital city of the Joseon dynasty) to Gyeongseong. In the 1930s, the Mitsukoshi Department Store was built and became a part of the plaza. As a result, the plaza was also considered to be the representative place of Gyeongseong. There are two main focuses in this study. Firstly, the plaza was a hub of transportation and came to be transformed into the center of urban culture. Secondly, people’s various feelings about and perceptions of the plaza are linked to the formation of the city image of Gyeongseong. In the plaza, people could experience both civilization and alienation. Therefore, the main focus of the study is to examine that a fragment of the city image with the plaza is the node between ideal and reality.
The plaza, centering around the Bank of Joseon and Namdaemun-tong (the Southern Gate District), is an area that emerged during the transition from Hanseong (Hanyang) to Gyeongseong. Namdaemun-tong, the most important road passing in front of the Bank of Joseon, has been maintained since an early age. The road from Namdaemun to the Bank of Joseon was made before 1912, when the urban planning of Gyeongseong began. As the Bank of Joseon was built, the plaza already had a basic form. The main roads which were connected to the plaza were also repaired early. This is due to three situations. First, the Japanese focused on the maintenance of Namdaemuntong because it was connected to their residence. Second, the building for the Japanese Government General of Joseon was located on Namsan (South Mountain) and wanted to make the Namdaemun area a center. Third, the road from Namdaemun to the Bank of Joseon area had to be built as a path to civilization. The plaza in front of the Bank of Joseon was filled with tall buildings, straight and wide roads, and street lights to illuminate at night, like the entrance to the modern city of Gyeongseong.
In the 1930s, the plaza in front of the Bank of Joseon had become a bustling downtown. There are two reasons. Firstly, the Mitsukoshi Department Store was built in the 1930s and became a part of the plaza in front of Joseon Bank. Department stores were the center of trendy urban culture. Secondly, the road was completely renovated in the process of resolving traffic difficulties around the plaza. A rotary was built and the city space changed. Above all, it should be focused on the fact that the plaza is the entrance to Gyeongseong and the central city.
The perception and reaction of the people of the time towards the plaza varied in its layers. In the postcards portraying the attractions of Gyeongseong, the plaza in front of the Bank of Joseon appeared as the central place of Gyeongseong. However, the plaza was both a symbol of modernized Gyeongseong and a place to reveal alienation. One of the examples is the appearance of the low-class people wandering around the square. This depicts the plaza in the city image of Gyeongseong as an area like a node that mediates between ideal and reality.
