다솔사 보안암 석굴과 불상에 대한 고찰 (A Study on the Buddhist Sculpture of Dasolsa Boanam)

초록

다솔사 보안암 석굴은 한국축조석굴 중에서 마지막 단계를 장식하는 석굴이라서 구조상, 또는 불교조각의 미술사적 의의면에서 매우 중요하다. 다솔사 보안암 석굴에 관해 정리해보면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 다솔사 보안암 석굴은 석굴의 평면구조나 축조방식상 한국축조석굴 중에서 최종계급에 해당되는 양식적 특징을 보이고 있어서 한국축조석굴의 이행과정을 추정할 수 있는 중요한 자료가 된다. 둘째, 다솔사 보안암 석굴은 석굴의 구조적 축면, 그리고 본존불좌상의 세부형식이나 본존불 주위에 십육나한상이 봉안되어 있는 점으로 미루어보아 한국축조석굴의 대표적인 예라고 할 수 있는 석굴암과 매우 흡사한 점을 알 수 있다. 그렇지만 석굴암의 구조를 기본적으로 따르면서 현관부의 정교한 가구수법과 통로, 그리고 주실의 짜임새 있는 구도와 고분의 축조수법을 활용한 축조방식, 그리고 본존불 좌우에 십육나한상을 배치함으로서 당시의 신앙체계를 반영하고 있는 점에서 그 의의가 크다. 셋째, 다솔사 보안암 석굴은 이 석굴이 위치해 있는 산과 연봉을 이루는 곳에 하동 이맹굴을 포함한 2기의 석굴군과 이명사 마애석불좌상 등 일연의 석굴군이 조영된 점과 경북 의성군의 해망산 석굴군의 예로 미루어보아 고려시대에 들어와서도 석굴사원이 조영되고 있었다는 사실을 입증하고 있다. 넷째, 석굴내부에 봉안되어 있는 석가불좌상과 십육나한상은 다솔사 보안암 석굴의 조성배경을 알려주는 가장 분명한 자료이다. 석굴 내부에 십육나한상과 그 주존불인 석가불상이 봉안되어 있는 점으로 미루어 다솔사 보안암 석굴은 나한신앙 특히 십육나한신앙에 의해 조성된 석굴로서 당시의 시대상과 불교신앙체계를 살펴볼 수 있다. 다섯째, 석굴의 구조와 석굴 내부에 봉안되어 있는 석가불좌상과 십육나한상의 세부형식을 고찰해볼 때 다솔사 보안암 석굴은 고려전기에 조성된 것으로 추정할 수 있다. 따라서 석굴의 양식과 함께 고려시대 불상조각을 연구하는데 있어서 중요한 자료가 될 것으로 기대된다.

영어초록

The Buddhist Cave Temple in Sacheon(사천) is one of the most synthetic and meaningful relics in both the religious and artistic aspects. In Korea, the Buddhist cave temples were built according to the geographical conditions, thereby creating some original works of Buddhist Art each era. The Dasolsa Boanam(다솔사 보안암) is one that marks the finale of the construction of Korean cave temples. Its sculptural style lags behind in both its structure and significance in the history of Buddhist Art compared to other previous cave temples. However, considering the fact that Buddhism flourished throughout the Goryeo Dynasty, it seems natural and characteristic that it comprises more of religious aspect in it. The significance of The Dasolsa Boanam can be summarized as follows: First. the Dasolsa Boanam marks the final style in the Korean cave temple both in its plan and the building method. It provides part of the important data or materials in tracing the building process or style of the Korean cave temples. Second, the arrangement of the images in the Dasolsa Boamam. There is the image of the Main-Buddha in the center and sixteen Buddha's disciples on either side of the Buddha. Such an arrangement shows similarity between the Dasolsa Boanam and the cave temple of Seoguram(석굴암). The Dasolsa Boanam basically follows the structure of Seoguram in the building method; the delicate technique and lane at the entrance or porch of the Dasolsa Boanam, the refined composition of the square plan of the main room. The construction technique of the old tombs is applied in Dasolsa Boanam. It also reflects the religious system of the time. The fact that the image of sixteen Buddha's disciples is enshrined on either side of the Main-Buddha Image is very important.Third, there are a series of cave temples in the area; two cave temples including the Imaenggul(이맹굴) of Hadong, which is located near the Dasolsa Boanam. There are another group of cave temples in the Haemang mountain of Kyungbuk Euisung. They show that the stone cave temples were built even during the Goryeo Dynasty. Fourth. the Main-Buddha lmage and 16 Buddha's disciples images enshrined in the Dasolsa Boanam are most evident data indicating the creative background of the cave temple. Considering the fact that 16 Buddha's disciples's figures and the sitting Buddha were the object of worship, it is possible to assume that the Dasolsa Boanam was planned based on the religion of Buddha's disciples. Accordingly, the Dasolsa Boanam hints to the religious system of the time. Fifth, the structure of the Dasolsa Boanam and the detailed style of the Main-Buddha Image and 16 Buddha's disciples enshrined on either side of the Main-Buddha Image in the Dasolsa Boanam, it can be assumed that the Dasolsa Boanam was built in the former period of the Koryo era. Accordingly, it is expected that the Dasolsa Boanam will help researchers in their studies of the style of the cave temple and the Buddhist Sculpture of the Goryeo Dynasty.
