<나무꾼과 선녀>와 일본 <날개옷>설화의 비교연구가 안고 있는 문제점과 가능성 (Problems and Prospects for Comparative Scholarship on the ‘Swan-Maiden’ Tales of Korea and Japan)

초록

이 연구의 목적은 한국의 <나무꾼과 선녀> 설화와 일본의 <날개옷> 설화에 관한 기존의 비교연구의 문제점을 점검하고, 새로운 한일 설화 비교연구의 가능성을 모색하는 데 있다. 한국에서 <나무꾼과 선녀> 설화는 학자들의 견해를 종합하면 크게 네 유형으로 나누어진다. 선녀가 나무꾼의 곁을 떠나는 것에서 끝나는 선녀승천형, 나무꾼이 두레박을 타고 천상계로 올라가는 것으로 끝나는 나무꾼승천형, 천상에 올라 간 나무꾼이 처갓집 식구들이 내주는 과제를 치루고 행복해지는 천상시련극복형, 천상에 올라간 나무꾼이 어머니가 그리워서 지상으로 내려오는 수탉유래형이 있다.
이 네 가지 하위유형 가운데 세 번째 것인 ‘천상시련극복형’은 1890년대부터 1980년대까지 근 90년간 전국적으로 가장 많은 각편이 채록된 유형이다. 또 우리나라에서 최초로 채록된 <나무꾼과 선녀> 설화인 가린-미하일로프스의 「박씨」도 천상시련극복형이다. 초기 구전설화의 채록 상황을 고려할 때 천상시련극복형이 지니는 가치는 매우 크다. 하지만 기존의 한일비교연구는 천상시련극복형에 관심을 기울이지 않았다. 그 가장 큰 이유는 1910년에 다카하시 도오루가 편찬한 『조선물어집』에 실린 「선녀의 날개옷」이 나무꾼승천형이고, 1920년대에 일본인 학자들이 조선동화집 류에 실은 <나무꾼과 선녀>가 거의 나무꾼승천형이기 때문이다. 하지만 임석재가 일제강점기에 채록하고 1987년 이후 『한국구전설화』에 소개한 각편들을 살펴보면 천상시련극복형이 가장 많이 실려 있다. 또 『한국구비문학대계』에도 천상시련극복형의 각편이 많이 수록되어 있다. 이 두 구전설화집 총서를 살펴보면 이 유형의 중요성을 알 수 있다.
따라서 이 논문에서는 기존의 한일 비교연구가 관심을 기울이지 않는 천상시련극복형을 살펴봄으로써 <나무꾼과 선녀> 설화와 <날개옷> 설화의 유사성과 차이점을 살펴보았다. 일본의 <날개옷> 설화도 여러 유형이 있는데, 천상시련극복형과 유사한 하위유형으로는 ‘천상방문형’ 또는 ‘칠석유래형’이 있다. 이 두 유형의 일본 <날개옷> 설화에서 주인공은 하늘로 올라가서 장인이 내주는 과제를 선녀 아내의 도움으로 치룬다. 천상에서 선녀-아내와 행복하게 사는 경우도 있지만,많은 설화에서 남편은 장인의 계략에 속아서 참외를 잘못 자르는 바람에 은하수가 생겨서 지상으로 추락한다.
이 두 유형의 일본 <날개옷> 설화와 일본의 『고사기』를 한국의 <선녀와 나무꾼> 설화와 비교해보면 여러 공통된 모티프를 발견하게 된다. 특히 쥐, 넝쿨식물, 화살 등은 상고시대에 한일 양국 간에 있었을 설화 교류를 짐작하게 하는 모티프들이다. 오호쿠니누시 신화에서는 쥐가 조력자로 출현해서 불의 위기에 처해 있는 영웅을 구해주고 장인 스사노오가 쏜 화살을 가져다 준다. 그리고 일본에서 채록된 각편 가운데는 밤메꽃, 호박, 완두 등 넝쿨식물이 천상계와 지상계를 연결하는 우주목으로 등장하는 설화들이 많이 있다. 일본에서 이러한 화소들이 등장하는 각편들이 채록된 지역이 한국의 남쪽지방과 가깝다. 따라서 이즈모 지방과 백제 또는 신라의 문화교류로 한국의 <나무꾼과 선녀> 설화가 일본의 오호쿠니누시 신화와 <날개옷> 설화에 영향을 미쳤을 가능성이 크다.

영어초록

The purpose of the present study is to examine the problems of the previous comparative scholarship on the relationship between the swan-maiden tales of Korea and Japan, that is, "The Woodcutter and the Heavenly Maiden" and "The Woman Who Came Down from Heaven" and to find prospects for the better ways of comparing Korean and Japanese tales. In Korea, there have been various versions of swan-maiden tales to the extent that the majority of scholars can divide them into the following four subtypes: (1) the heavenly maiden's flight, (2) the woodcutter's flight, (3) the woodcutter's fulfillment of heavenly tasks, (4) the legend of the rooster.
Of those four subtypes, the oral variants of the third subtype, 'the woodcutter's fulfillment of heavenly tasks,' had been the most collected during the period from the late nineteenth century until 1980s. The first version of Korean swan-maiden tales that Garin-Mikhailovskii collected in 1898 also belongs to the third subtype. Consequently, it is necessary for us to examine in detail the tales of the third subtype for the genuine understanding of the intercultural relationships between Korean swan-maiden tales and those of Japan. However, previous comparative scholarship has hardly shown any interest in the oral versions of the third subtype. It is partly because Suk-jae Yim, an eminent Korean folklorist, published rather too late the oral versions he collected during the Japanese colonial period. He published those versions from 1987 to 1993. Accordingly, it was difficult for most of the scholars to refer to those oral versions when they compared Korean swan-maiden tales with their Japanese counterparts.
Because of these problems or limits, previous comparative studies between "The Woodcutter and the Heavenly Maiden" and "The Woman Who Came Down from Heaven" have not been very informative to illuminate the cultural exchange or literary relationships between the swan-maiden tales of those two countries. In the present study, while focusing on the subtype named "the woodcutter's fulfillment of heavenly tasks," I have tried to explore its relationships with Japanese swan-maiden tales which incorporate the motif of the son-in-law tasks. In Japanese oral tradition, there have been a good number of swan-maiden tales in which the human husband pursuits his wife to the heaven and fulfills the heavenly tasks assigned by his father-in-law.
When comparing Korean swan-maiden tales with their Japanese counterparts with a special emphasis on 'heavenly tasks' or 'son-in-law tasks', we can find significant common narrative elements between them. The majority of Korean oral folktales that recount the woodcutter's trials and tribulations in the heaven tend to contain such motifs as mouse, calabash vine (pumpkin or squash), and arrows. The motifs of mouse and arrows can be also found in the 8th century record, the Kojiki. In the myth of Okuninushi, a mouse appears as a magical helper to save Okuninushi's life in a fire crisis and fetch the arrows that his father-in-law had shot. Moreover, Japanese folklorists have recorded a number of oral 'swan-maiden' versions in which such vines as moonflower, squash, and green peas function as a world tree connecting the earth and the heaven. The Japanese regions where swan-maiden tales having those motifs have been widely collected or recorded are so close to the southern part of Korea that we can think about the possibilities of international folktale exchanges between Silla or BaekJae and the Izumo province.
When taking into consideration these similarities between Korean swan-maiden tales and Japanese myth and oral folktales, we can make an assumption about the influences of Korean folktales on the Okuninushi myth and Japanese folktales in ancient times.
