초록

‘독본(讀本)’은 교과서형태로 등장한 근대적 텍스트이다. 근대적 학제의 도입과 교과의 재편은 필연적으로 공식적 교과용 도서, 즉 교과서를 필요로 하게 되었는바, 근대형성기 교과서는 근대담론의 재편과 함께 근대적 의미의 문학이 본격적으로 형성·분화·편제되는 과정을 살펴보는 데 유용하다. 근대문학의 총체적 파악이 작품과 문학제도의 동시적 분석을 통해 이루어져야 한다고 할 때, 독본류가 주목되는 이유는 그것이 표준적 지식체계를 배타적으로 정립하고 재생산구조를 확보하는 제도적 매체였다는 점에 있다. 더욱이 이러한 매체의 형성과정에서 독본은 사실상 제도적-비제도적, 관(官)-민(民), 일제-조선의 ‘근대지(智)’가 충돌하는 양상을 보여준다는 점이다. 따라서 독본에 대한 관심과 궁극적 분석은 조선적 근대 담론의 형성과정은 물론 ‘문학의 정전화(正典化)’ 과정을 파악할 수 있으며, 나아가 탈식민의 계기까지도 징후적으로 해석할 수 있는 여지를 마련한다. 이러한 문제의식을 전제로, 이 글은 독본류가 형성하는 제도적 어문교육과 그 안에서의 특징을 살펴보는 한편, 교과서 밖의 교과서로서 독본류가 어떻게 발생하게 되었으며, 특정시기 경향적으로 형성되는 의미는 무엇이고, 그것이 언제까지 어떻게 나름의 재생산 구조를 가지고 유지되어 나가는지를 살펴보았다. 근대형성기 ‘독본(讀本)’은 중세적 환경에 놓여져 있었던 학제와 문학적 체계를 근대제도 안으로 끌어들었다. 그러나 완전히 새로운 체제로 재편하지는 못했다. 독본의 위상은 분명 신문이나 잡지와 구별된다. 넒은 의미의 근대지(智)를 보급하고 그것을 통해 독자적인 근대를 기획, 상상, 설계하려는 점에서는 동일하지만, 독본은 자기 나름의 ‘근대적 이정(里程)’를 명시하고, 배타적으로 견인하는 매체이자 제도였던 것이다. 예컨대, 『소년』, 『청춘』을 통해 세계적 지식, 그리고 그 안에서의 세계문학을 배타적으로 형성해냈다면, 『시문독본』에서는 서구문학의 사례가 거의 없고, 고전 작품 등이 빈번히 등장하면서 한국근대문학의 정전적 모범을 만들어가는 시도 했던 것이다. 이런 의미에서 보자면, 독본(讀本)이란 ‘상상의 국어국문학’으로 나아가는 길목에 놓인 ‘표준적 체계를 갖춘 확고한 제도로서의 로드맵’이었다고 할 수 있다. 일제의 교육 정책 및 제도권 교과서 대(對) 조선인의 적극적인 취학 의지 및 비교과서라는 구도는 서로 동상이몽적 성격을 지니고 있었음에도 불구하고 점차 그 양상을 달리하고, 결과적으로는 1930년대 이르러는 취학률의 폭발이라는 현상과 더불어 매체간의 치열한 싸움이 제도와 비제도적으로 진행되어 감을 알 수 있다. 그것의 기본적 양상은 ‘독본(讀本)’이 대중을 상대로 계몽과 근대지의 보급에 주안점을 두었던 독자를 세분하고, 문학에 대한 인식을 정밀하게 진행시켜가면서 ‘강화(講話)’의 형태로 나아간다고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

A ‘reader’ was a kind of modern text that took the form of a textbook. As the modern school system was introduced and the subjects went through reorganization, it was inevitable to adopt official books for teaching and learning, that is, textbooks. Those textbooks that appeared during the early modern times are useful in investigating the reorganization of modern discourses and tracing back the process of the full-scale formation, specialization, and distribution of literature in a modern sense. Understanding that a simultaneous analysis of texts and literature systems is the precondition of the overall apprehension of modern literature, readers are worth reviewing since they were an institutional medium used to establish the standard knowledge system and secure the reproduction structure exclusively. It is worth noticing that ‘the modern mind’ was conflicting between the institutions and non-institutions, the government and private sector, and the Japanese and the Koreans in the process of the medium’s formation. Thus it seems like that, by having concern in and doing an ultimate analysis of a reader, we can understand the formation process of Chosun’s modern discourses and process of ‘canonization of literature’ and further interpret the causes of postcolony in a symptomatic way. Based on those discussions, this study set out to investigate the institutional language and literature education using readers and their characteristics and examine how a reader came into existence as a textbook outside the territory of a textbook, what was the meaning of its formation as a trend during a certain period, and how and until when it was maintained with its own reproduction structure. As it was entering the modern age, it was a ‘reader’ that embraced into the institutions the school system and literary system, which were still in the medieval environment. But it failed to reorganize them into a totally new system. The status of a reader is different from that of newspaper or magazine even though it shares the common service of spreading the modern mind in a broader sense and planning, imagining, and designing a new era of modern times with the two media. A reader was the medium and institution to present of ‘modern distance’ of its own kind and lead the trend in a critical manner. Boys and Youth, for example, introduced the world’s knowledge and criticized the world literature within the frame, while The Current litrtature Reader rarely printed western literary works and was active in introducing classical works of Korea, attempting to make a canonic model of the Korean modern literature. In this sense, it would not be too absurd to conclude that a reader was ‘a road map as a confirmed institution with a standard system’ placed on the way to ‘Korean linguistics and literature of imagination.’ In the initial stage, the textbooks within the category of educational policies and systems and the non-textbooks along with the aggressive willingness to pursue education of Korean started at the same point. But as time went by, the gap between the two sector grew bigger. In the 1930s, the rates of Koreans getting education exploded, which ignited the ferocious battle between media in the institutional and non-institutional way. The basic trend of all that was a ‘reader’ enlightening the public, classifying the reader groups whose focus was the distribution of the modern mind, and developing their perception of literature in a elaborate way, thus making its way to a ‘lecture.’
