발굴조사 결과를 통해 본 예천 개심사지 사역의 고찰 (An Analysis of the Area of Yecheon Gaesimsa Temple Site Based on the Results of Excavation Survey)

초록

예천 개심사지는 개심사지 오층석탑의 존재와 명문으로 인해 알려졌지만 문헌기록에는 등장하지 않는 사찰이다. 1차 조사는 2014년도에 탑 주변 남본리 일대를 진행하였고 조사 결과, 금당지와 경계석렬, 다수의 석렬과 석군 등이 노출되어사찰의 실체가 확인되었다. 탑을 기준으로 북동쪽에 금당지가 있으며 북서쪽에 부속유구, 북쪽에서 남동쪽으로 연결되는 경계석렬군(추정 담장지 및 문지), 담장지와 연결되는 중앙석렬군(추정 통로)이 조성되어 있는 것을 확인하였다.
2차 조사는 2018년도에 1차 조사의 북쪽에 이어서 진행하였고 1차 조사 때 확인된 경계석렬이 북쪽으로 연속되는 것이 조사되었다. 또한 건물지와 석렬, 석군등이 확인되었고 ‘卍’자 기와편과 지진구 등 사찰과 관련된 유물도 출토되었다. 기존 1차 조사는 금당지와 부속유구들이 확인되었고, 사역의 범위에 대해서는 한정적인 자료를 제공했다고 한다면 2차 조사에서는 개심사지의 사역이 한천에 가까운 북서쪽으로 더 확대되는 것을 알 수 있었다. 또한 1차 조사시에 유물로만 드러났던 통일신라시대 문화층 및 유구의 존재가 확인됨에 따라 개심사지의 사역 범위와 시대별 변화에 대해서 살펴볼 수 있게 되었다. 또한 개심사지 인근 여러 발굴조사를 통해서 사역의 범위가 지금의 탑 주변이 아니라 남쪽으로 더욱 넓은 범위였을 것으로 추정된다.
개심사지에 대한 전체적인 발굴조사 결과를 개관하면 지금의 위치에 통일신라시대에 창건되었으며, 고려전기에 5층 석탑을 건립하고 북쪽으로 새로운 건물들을 건립하면서 사세를 확장해나간다. 하지만 범람으로 인해 북쪽에 건물들이 유실되어 그 자리에 새로운 건물들을 건립하고 남쪽으로도 사역을 확장하면서 가장 전성기를 이룬다. 조선시대에 들어서면서 범람이 심해지자 경계석렬을 쌓아 사역을 유지했지만 한천의 범람을 막지 못하고 16세기에 폐사된 것으로 판단된다.
한편 굳이 수해의 위험이 있는 위치에 사찰을 조성했다는 것은 당시 풍수지리사상의 영향을 받아 비보의 성격으로 사찰을 조성했을 가능성이 높다. 또한 개심사 오층석탑의 건립 과정에 지역의 호장을 비롯한 지방관리들, 향도조직, 지역 주민들이 참여하였다고 기록되어 있으므로 개심사는 적어도 고려시대에는 지역 호족들과 밀접한 관계를 맺으면서 성장하였을 것으로 생각할 수 있다. 특히 출토유물 중에 고급청자나 제기 등은 보이지 않고, 사찰의 중수과정에서 관이 개입한 것으로 볼 수 있는 명문기와가 극히 적은 것으로도 같은 지역의 용문사의 개창과정과 다르게 왕실에서의 개입보다는 지방호족과 깊은 연관이 있는 사찰인 것으로생각된다.

영어초록

The site of Gaesimsa Temple, Yecheon, known for the presence of the five-story stone pagoda and its inscriptions, remains unmentioned in historical records. In 2014, the first excavation was undertaken in the vicinity of Nambon-ri where the pagoda is situated. The investigation revealed the foundation of worship hall, boundary stones, numerous stone columns, and stone walls, which confirms the existence of temple. Based on the location of the pagoda, it has been confirmed that there is the site of worship hall to the northeast, subsidiary relics to the northwest, and a group of boundary stones that connect from north to southeast (presumed to be wall and gate), as well as a central group of stone columns that connect to the wall (presumed to be a passage) to the south of the wall.
Following the first excavation of the northern site, a second excavation was conducted in 2018. The investigation revealed the continuity of the boundary stone wall, which had been previously identified during the first excavation, extending further to the north. Additionally, building foundations, stone columns, and stone walls were identified; and relics related to the temple, such as the man(卍) shaped roof tiles and ritual implements for the land god(地鎭 具), were also unearthed. While the initial excavation had confirmed the existence of the site of worship hall and subsidiary relics, and provided limited information regarding the extent of the temple, the subsequent second excavation revealed that the reach of the Gaesimsa Temple had extended further northwest, closer to the Hancheon River. Furthermore, with the confirmation of the existence of cultural layers and relics from the Unified Silla period, which had only been indicated by artifacts during the initial excavation, it became possible to examine the extent and changes in the temple area of Gaesimsa Temple over different periods. Through multiple excavations near the temple, it is also presumed that the range of the temple area extended further to the south, rather than being confined to the current vicinity of the pagoda.
In summary of the overall excavation results of Gaesimsa Temple site, the temple was founded in the Unified Silla period at its current location. During the early Goryeo period, a five-story stone pagoda was built, and new buildings were constructed to the north to expand the temple. However, due to flooding, the northern buildings were lost and new ones were built in their place. The temple reached its peak during this expansion to the south. In the Joseon period, floods continued to be a problem, and the temple was maintained through the construction of a boundary stone wall. Nevertheless, it was determined that the temple was abandoned in the 16th century after being unable to withstand flooding from the Hancheon River.
On the other hand, the construction of a temple in a location that was susceptible to flooding may have been influenced by the principles of feng shui and the practice of geometric empowerment(裨補). It is also noted that local officials, village organizations, and local residents, including the local headman, participated in the construction of the five-story stone pagoda of Gaesimsa, suggesting that the temple had close ties to local powers during the Goryeo period. The absence of high-quality celadon or ritual vessels among the excavated artifacts, as well as the scarcity of inscribed roof tiles that suggest the involvement of the royal court during the renovation process, further support the notion that Gaesimsa had stronger ties to local powers than to the central royal authority, unlike the founding of Yongmunsa in the same region.
