임진왜란 시기 사천해전지의 위치 고찰 (A Research on the Location of the naval Battle of Sacheon during the Imjin War)

초록

임진왜란 시기인 1592년 5월 29일(음력) 전라좌수사 이순신이 경상도 해안으로 출전하여 승리를 거둔 전투가 사천해전이다. 일찍이 이은상은 사천해전이 벌어진 곳을 지금의 사천시 용현면 선진리로 주장하였는데, ‘선창’을 ‘선소(船所)’의 의미로 해석하여 조선 후기에 선소가 있었던 선진리를 사천 선창으로 본 듯하다. 그의 주장은 현재 학계 안팎으로 거의 정설처럼 여겨지고 있다. 지금까지 사천해전에 관한 많은 연구 자료가 출간되었지만, 사천해전이 벌어진 곳의 위치를 학술적으로 검토한 자료는 거의 없다.
사천 선창을 선진리로 주장한 이은상의 주장은 다음과 같은 세 가지 문제점을 안고 있다. 첫째, 선진리 선소가 임진왜란 시기에도 같은 곳에 있었음을 보여주는 근거가 없다. 둘째, 용어 ‘선창’이 ‘선소’뿐만 아니라 다른 여러 가지 의미도 지니고 있다. 셋째, 이순신의 장계에 사천 선창의 지리적 특징이 묘사된 내용이 있지만 이것을 선진리 선소의 지리적 특징과 비교하는 과정을 거치지 않았다. 게다가 사천해전 전투가 벌어진 지역을 선진리가 아닌 다른 곳으로 서술한 자료도 존재한다.
본 논고는 그동안 간과된 사천해전지의 위치를 학술적인 관점에서 고찰한다. 우선 선진리 선소에 관한 사료와 용어 ‘선창’에 관한 연구 자료 등을 검토하여 선진리 선소가 사천 선창으로 볼 수 있는 곳인지 살펴보고, 이순신의 장계에 묘사된 사천 선창의 지리적 특징이 선진리 기록된 사천해전지에 관해서도 그 신빙성을 검토한다.

영어초록

On May 29, 1592, during the Imjin War, General Yi Sun-shin(이순신) went to war on the coast of Gyeongsang Province and won the naval Battle of Sacheon(사천해전). Earlier, Lee Eun-sang(이은상) claimed that the place where the Battle of Sacheon(사천해전) took was Seonjin-ri(선진리), Yonghyeon-myeon(용현면), Sacheon-si(사천시), and it seems that he interpreted 'Seonchang(선창)' as the meaning of 'Seonso(船所)' and saw Seonjin-ri(선진리), where the shipyard was located in the late Joseon Dynasty, as Sacheon Seonchang(사천 선창). His assertion is now considered almost orthodox both inside and outside the academic world. Until now, many research data on the naval Battle of Sacheon(사천해전) have been published, but few have reviewed the location of the naval Battle of Sacheon(사천해전) academically.
Lee Eun-sang(이은상)'s assertion that Sacheon Seonchang(사천선창) was claimed as Seonjin-ri(선진리) has the following three problems. First, there is no basis for showing that Seonjin-ri Seonso(선진리 선소) was in the same place during the Imjin War. Second, the term 'Seonchang(선창)' has not only 'Seonso(선소)' but also a number of other meanings. Third, although there is a description of the geographical characteristics of Sacheon Seonchang(사천 선창) in Yi Sun-shin(이순신)'s drafts of war reports, it did not go through the process of comparing this with the geographical characteristics of Seonjin-ri Seonso(선진리 선소). In addition, there is a historical record describing the area where the naval Battle of Sacheon(사천해전) took place other than Seonjin-ri(선진리).
This paper examines the location of the naval Battle of Sacheon(사천해전), which has been overlooked so far, from an academic perspective. First of all, we will examine whether Seonjin-ri Seonso(선진리 선소) can be viewed as Sacheon Seonchang(사천 선창) by reviewing historical records about Seonjin-ri Seonso(선진리 선소) and research data on the term 'Seonchang(선창)'. We will check whether the geographical characteristics of Sacheon Seonchang(사천 선창) described in Yi Sun-shin(이순신)'s drafts of war reports match those of Seonjin-ri Seonso. In addition, the reliability of the location of the naval Battle of Sacheon(사천 해전) recorded in other historical record other than Yi Sun-shin(이순신)'s drafts of war reports is reviewed.
