초록

조지훈은 시 생명의 본질을 자연으로 보았다. 그는 자연인 ‘경’과 정신적인 교감인 ‘정’을 감각적이고 미적으로 표현한 시를 우수한 시라고 하였다. 이처럼 조지훈 시의 본령은 자연의 발견에 있는데 한자문화권에서 자연이란 단순히 물질적 현상계를 의미하지 않고 인격화된 존재나 신적 존재, 또는 도나 진리의 구현체로 인식되었다. 경과 정, 객관과 주관과의 교융을 통해 그의 정서나 의식세계를 형상화 했던 조지훈은 동양문화권의 시적 형상 사유의 전통을 계승하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 이는 조지훈 시관의 핵심을 통합하는 시적 범주이자 그의 시 정신을 해명할 수 있는 주요 개념이다. 그가 바라보는 ‘자연’은 다양한 양상으로 나타난다.
이 글은 조지훈의 작품과 시론을 통하여 조지훈이 동양문화권의 전통시론에서 자연성의 구현과 어떻게 접속하고 있는지를 구명하고자 하였다. 이는 조지훈의 시와 시론이 지향하는 바와 한국시의 뿌리를 함께 살피는 작업이라고 할 수 있다. 특히 조지훈은 시의 세 가지 기본 성격을 <관조하는 시>와 <우아한 시>, <비장한 시>로 나누어 살폈는데, 이것은 그의 시관의 핵심을 통합하는 시의 범주라고 판단된다. 이는 한국 시의 전통에 심연을 이루는 동양 자연의 미학적 자질과 닿아있는 대목이다.
조지훈은 시 「고풍의상」을 통해 우리 고유의 의상을 깊이 바라보고 그 본성을 파악하는 지적 직관, 즉 관조미를 보여주었고, 자연 속으로 들어가 내면적으로 그 자연을 느끼고 스스로가 그것의 생명과 함께 하나가 되는 물아일체의 경지인 <우아한 시>인 「산방」을 창작했으며, 시 「절정」에서는 인간과 인간 사이에 모순과 갈등이 슬픔을 불러일으키는 비장미를 보여준다. 조지훈은 이 시들을 창작함으로서 창작주체와 시적 대상과의 관계 속에서 ‘자연성’이 구현되는 방식을 보여준다. 이처럼 조지훈은 서구적 근대서정시로는 충족시킬 수 없는 사유를 담기 위해서 자연표상을 통해 인생의 존재론적 의미를 탐구하였다. 이러한 점에서 조지훈 시는 서정적으로나 정신적으로나 전통에 심연을 이루는 동양의 미학적 자질을 계승하고 있음을 알 수 있다.

영어초록

Cho Jihoon viewed nature as the elan vital of poetry, qualifying poems that express “Jung, 정/情” in union with “경/景” which nature is sensuously and esthetically as poesy par excellence. Thus to him the aim of the original realm of poetry was to discover nature, which in the cultural sphere of East Asia did not simply mean material phenomena but instead agnized it as a personified or deistic existence or as an embodiment of the way or truth. So one can tell that Cho, having embodied his ethos or conscious domain through the inter-fusion of gyong and jung, objectivity and subjectivity, did carry on the poetic form and traditional thinking of East Asia. Such is the poetic realm by which the core of his view of poetry can be integrated; it is also the key concept whereby his spirit of poetry may be explained. Nature as he saw presented itself in various forms.
The purpose of this study is to explain how Cho Jihoon attempted to interface nature and its embodiment in the context of theories on traditional East Asian poetry in light of his works and theories of poetry. My study can thus be regarded as an endeavor to look at the aim of his poems and theories of poetry and the roots of Korean poetry simultaneously. Note that Cho viewed poetry in terms of Resolute, Contemplative, and Elegant types, namely a realm of poetry that integrates the very core of his view of poetry which in turn ties in with the esthetic properties of nature of the Orient wherein the tradition of Korean poetry is anchored.
Through his poem entitled Image of Antiquity, Cho shows how he perceives the depth of the uniquely Korean costume, i.e. his intuitive intellect in the sense of contemplative esthetics while in The Zenith he lets the reader see the esthetics of resolute determination that evokes the sorrow of contradictions and conflicts between/among human beings. Through a poem of the Elegant type entitled The Corymb, he also personally demonstrates how the naturwüchsigkeit is embodied in the context of a relationship between the writer creating a poem and his audience. Note that Corymb signifies a state where one feels nature and feels becoming one with its life by entering it, as it were. In order to embed in his works of poetry the kind of thinking that defies embrace by ethos characteristic of contemporary modern West, Cho probed the existentialistic meaning of life by means of natural emblems. We are thus able to see that the poet under discussion does indeed carry on the esthetic properties of nature emblematic of East Asia in which traditions remain rooted both lyrically and spiritually.
