영화 <아가씨>의 각색 - 원작소설 『핑거스미스』와의 서사적 거리를 중심으로 - (The Transformation of the Film The Handmaiden by Adaption - Focusing on Narrative Distance of the Original Novel Fingersmith -)

초록

박찬욱 감독의 영화 <아가씨 The Handmaiden>(2016)는 영국 작가 세라 워터스(Sarah Waters)의 소설 『핑거스미스 Fingersmith』(2002)를 각색한 작품이다. 『핑거스미스』는 빅토리아시대(1860년대) 영국을 배경으로 사랑과 음모, 배신과 같은 통속적 주제를 다루고 있는 작품인데, 영화 <아가씨>는 원작에서 기본 플롯과 스토리를 취하면서 배경(시간과 공간), 인물, 결말을 달리 설정하여 원작과의 서사적 거리를 드러내었다. 이러한 서사적 거리는 원작의 변용과 재해석을 가져오고 매체 전환, 각색자의 의도, 감독의 스타일과 세계관 그리고 관객과의 소통 등의 문제와 연결된다. 영화 <아가씨>는 박찬욱 감독의 자기서사와 작품세계가 지향하는 바를 살펴볼 수 있다는 점에서 매우 흥미로운 지점을 제공한다.
영화 <아가씨>는 ‘여성 동성애’라는 원작소설과의 공통 모티프 위에 시간(1930년대 일제강점기) 및 공간(조선)의 변용을 통하여 계급의 차이(아가씨와 하녀), 민족의 관계(조선인과 일본인)를 덧씌운다. 이것은 빅토리아시대 영국 런던이라는 시공간의 분위기와는 다른 공기를 만들어냄으로써 ‘지금, 여기’에서의 영화 <아가씨>의 존재의미와 재맥락화를 형성한다. 또한 이는 인물의 성격화 및 결말의 엔딩에도 영향을 미치는 요인이 된다.
또한 영화 <아가씨>는 원작인물(석스비 부인)의 축소 및 삭제를 통한 인물변용을 통하여 출생의 비밀이라는 대중서사의 통속성을 피해 나가는 한편, 두 인물(히데코와 숙희)의 연대와 주체적 협력을 강화한다. 이로써 원작이 두 여성(모드와 수전)의 파국과 사랑을 부각시켰다면, 영화는 당당하고 열정적인 여성동성애와 희망에 방점을 찍는다.
이와 같이 원작과 다른 서사적 거리를 드러냄으로써 각색은 원작에 대한 재해석과 재창작의 열쇠가 된다. 각색은 원작의 성취에 대한 비평적 해석과 창조적 변용을 통하여 스스로의 존재의미를 드러내는 것이다.

영어초록

Director Park Chan-wook's film, The Handmaiden(2016) is adapted from British writer Sarah Waters' novel Fingersmith(2002). Fingersmith deals with popular themes of love, intrigue, and betrayal in the Victorian era(1860s) Britain while the film The Handmaiden adapts the original novel's plot and story but sets different backgrounds(time and space), characters, and the ending, showing narrative distance from the original novel. Such narrative distance brings transformation and reinterpretation on an original work and is involved with issues such as difference of media, intention of adapter, style and perspective of director, and communication with audiences. The Handmaiden provides very fascinating points as a chance to review director Park Chan-wook's self-narrative and direction by his own works.
The Handmaiden, based on the common motif of lesbianism with the original novel, transforms time(the Japanese colonial period in the 1930's) and space(Chosun) to cover class difference(lady and maid), and relationship between two ethnicities(Korean and Japanese). These create the atmosphere different from London, England in the Victorian era, and forms the meaning and recontextualization of The Handmaiden ‘here and now’. It also affects the film's characterization and ending.
In addition, the film the Handmaiden escapes the cliché of popular narrative such as secret of birth through character transformation of reduction and deletion of one character from the original work(Mrs. Sucksby) and strengthens solidarity and subjective cooperation between its own two characters(Hideko and Sook-hee). Therefore, while the original works focuses on catastrophes and love affair between both women(Maud and Susan), the film emphasizes confident and passionate lesbian love and hope.
As a result, showing narrative distance different from the original work, an adaption becomes the key for reinterpretation and re-creation on its original work. The adaption is to reveal its own meaning of existence with critical interpretation and creative transformation on the achievement of the original work.
