문충성의 후기시에 나타난 대안근대성(altermodernity)으로서 제주공동체 연구 (A Study on Jeju-community as the Altermodernity in Moon Choong-sung’s 2000s Poetry)

초록

본 연구는 문충성의 2000년대 이후 후기시를 중심으로, 그의 시에 나타난 대안근대성(altermodernity)으로서 제주공동체의 양상을 살펴보고자 한다. 2000년대의 제주 개발은 ‘국제자유도시’와 ‘세계평화의 섬’ 사업으로 요약된다. 이 시기 제주 개발은 표면적으로 자유, 협력, 상생, 평화 등의 가치를 강조하였으나, 그 이면에는 아시아와 태평양을 연결하는 제주도의 지리적 특성을 활용하여 국가의 경제발전을 도모하려는 신자유주의 세계화의 경제 논리가 작용하고 있다. 문충성의 후기시에서 2000년대 이후 제주 개발로 인한 제주공동체의 붕괴는 평화담론으로 희석될 수 없는 4ㆍ3의 상흔과 소외되어 버린 도민들의 현실, 생태계의 훼손 등으로 구체화된다. 이러한 시인의 비판의식은 현재 소멸된 제주공동체의 문화와 전통을 복원하여 대안근대성으로 제안하려는 생태적 상상력과 긴밀하게 연관된다. 공동체가 자치적으로 공유자원을 관리하고 공생해나가는 방식은 토착주의나 인종주의를 강조하는 반근대성(antimodernity)을 뛰어넘는다. 공동체의 자치적 전통은 신자유주의적 경제 논리에 저항하고, 국가 권력에 의해 공동자원을 착취하는 국가 및 제국주의에 균열을 발생시킬 수 있다. 이와 관련하여 2000년대 이후 문충성의 시에서 두드러지는 자연물의 호명과 열거는 개체주의와 전일주의가 복합된 제주공동체의 지역정신을 뜻하는 ‘개체적 대동주의’와도 상통한다. 또한 ‘원담’, ‘돌담’은 섬의 자연환경과 조화를 이루며 형성된 제주공동체의 생활양식을 상징한다. 그의 시에 형상화된 제주공동체의 문화와 전통은 ‘풀뿌리 민주주의’가 정착된 2000년대 이후에도 여전히 지속되고 있는 국가 주도의 개발주의가 지닌 폭력성을 고발하고, 생태윤리를 확립한다는 점에서 의의가 있다.

영어초록

This study examines the Jeju-community as a form of altermodernity in the late poetry of Moon Choong-sung after the 2000s. The development of Jeju in the 2000s was framed by the state-led initiatives of the “International Free City” and “Island of World Peace”. While these projects ostensibly promoted values such as freedom, cooperation, coexistence, and peace, they were in fact driven by the economic logic of neoliberal globalization. By exploiting Jeju’s strategic geographical position between Asia and the Pacific, the state promoted economic growth in the name of peace and development. In Moon Choong-sung’s later poetry, the collapse of the Jeju-community due to such neoliberal development policies is vividly depicted through the lingering wounds of the 4ㆍ3 Jeju Uprising, the marginalization of local residents, and the destruction of the island’s ecological system—realities that cannot be concealed by the state’s peace discourse. His poetry articulates a strong critique of these systemic injustices and is deeply intertwined with an ecological imagination that seeks to restore Jeju’s lost cultural and communal traditions as a form of alternative modernity.
The self-governing democratic traditions of the Jeju-community, which uphold democratic self-governance and collective resource management, challenge the exploitative nature of neoliberal capitalism and state power. These traditions move beyond antimodernity, which is often associated with nativism or racial nationalism, and instead advocate for a more inclusive and participatory communal model. The communal self-governance of Jeju resists the encroachment of state-led developmentalism and disrupts the imperialist logic that seeks to appropriate shared resources for economic gain. In this context, the frequent invocation and enumeration of natural elements in Moon Choong-sung’s poetry after the 2000s resonate with the concept of “Individual Corporativism”—a regional philosophy of the Jeju-community that integrates both individual autonomy and collective solidarity. Moreover, traditional structures such as “wondam” and “doldam” serve as powerful symbols of Jeju’s indigenous communal practices, which emphasize sustainable coexistence with nature. His poetic representation of Jeju’s cultural and political heritage is significant in that it not only exposes the continued violence of state-led developmentalism—despite the establishment of grassroots democracy in the 2000s—but also calls for an alternative political vision rooted in ecological ethics and self-determination.
