영주 무섬마을 선성김씨 문중의 민족운동 (Independence Movement of Sunsung Kim Clan of Moosum Town, Youngjoo)

초록

이 글은 영주 무섬마을 선성김씨 문중의 민족운동에 관한 글이다. 무섬마을에서 배출한 독립운동 포상자는 5명이며, 이는 2010년 현재 영주지역의 독립운동 포상자 가운데 약 1/10에 해당하는 상당한 수치이다. 또한 포상받지 못한 인물들까지 합하면 20여 명에 이른다. 이들의 민족운동은 1920년대 후반의 사회운동과 1930년대 전반의 적색농민조합운동에 집중되어 있다. 이는 민족운동 전개에 있어 상당히 독특한 경우이다.
무섬마을 선성김씨 문중은 병호시비 당시 병론에 가담하여 활동하였다. 병론에 가담한 문중은 대개 민족운동에 참여한 시기가 비교적 늦다. 이는 시기상 무섬마을 선성김씨 문중의 민족운동이 1920년대 후반의 사회운동과 1930년대 전반의 적색농민조합운동에 집중되는 배경이 되었다. 선성김씨 문중 청년들이 사회주의를 수용한 경로는 영주지역 사회운동가와의 학연과 지연으로 짐작된다. 무섬마을에서 사회주의를 수용한 인물들은 대개 마을 안에서 대표적인 명문가 출신이다. 따라서 이들의 사회주의 수용은 안동문화권의 사회주의 수용과 그 맥을 같이한다.
무섬마을 청년들의 1920년대 후반의 활동은 두 시기로 구분할 수 있다. 1928년 전반 무섬마을 청년들은 영주청년동맹 평은지부를 설립하는데 노력을 기울였다. 그 결과 1928년 2월, 평은지부는 영주청년동맹의 세 번째 지부로 설립되었다. 1928년 후반부터 무섬마을 청년들은 영주지역 사회운동의 핵심에서 활동하기 시작했다. 이 시기 무섬마을 청년들의 활동은 김성규가 주도한 국제무산청년의 날 기념 통지문 살포 시도와 김화진의 순흥청년회 해체 시도, 영주지역 한해구제 활동, 김계진의 2차 영주격문의거 등으로 나타난다.
한편 선성김씨 문중 청년들은 고향인 무섬마을에 ‘아도서숙’이라는 학교를 세우고 교육운동에 나섰다. 아도서숙은 문맹퇴치, 민족교육, 민족정신의 고양이라는 목적을 가지고 있었다. 아도서숙은 선성김씨 문중의 청년들이 주도하였으며, 운영은 운영위원들의 성금으로 충당하였다. 아도서숙은 운영위원들의 활동에 상당한 영향을 받았다. 결국, 1933년 일어난 영주적농재건투쟁위원회 사건 이후 아도서숙은 일제에 의해 강제로 문을 닫고 말았다.
격문의거 이후 무섬마을 청년들은 노선의 변화를 꾀했다. 합법적인 사회단체를 통한 투쟁에서 비밀지하조직으로 노선을 전환한 것이다. 김화진은 영주지역의 ‘영주군공산주의자협의회’에 가담하였다. ‘영주군공산주의자협의회’는 인근 예천, 봉화와도 연계한 활동을 시도했다. 하지만 조직을 만든지 몇 달만에 일제에 의해 조직이 와해되고 말았다. 영주군공산주의자협의회 이후, 무섬마을에서는 김종진과 김명진을 중심으로 안동콤그룹과 연계된 적색농민조합운동이 일어났다. 비록 안동콤그룹의 세포조직이었지만 영주적농재건투쟁위원회는 무섬마을 청년들이 주도한 운동이었다. 이들은 안동과 봉화 등지와 연합하여 1933년 5월 메이데이에 공동투쟁을 계획하였다. 하지만 일제에 의해 조직이 와해되어 무섬마을 청년들의 활동은 실패로 돌아가고 말았다.
무섬마을 선성김씨 문중의 민족운동은 가진 자의 선각자적 시각에서 출발하였다. 하지만 이 때문에 그들의 활동은 일정한 한계를 가질 수밖에 없었다. 마을의 민족운동을 주도한 인물들이 대개 마을의 명문가 출신이다 보니, 이들은 농민과 일반 대중을 교화의 대상으로 인식한 것이다. 거듭된 체포와 투옥으로 무섬마을에서 민족운동을 주도한 인물들이 사라진 후, 투쟁이 계속되지 못한 까닭은 거기에 있을 것이다.

영어초록

This writing is about independence movement, which was led by Sunsung Kim clan(宣城金氏). There are 5 laureates of the Order of Merit for National Foundation for their independence actions, and this is about 10% portion of awarded people in Youngjoo district. If we include other people who were not rewarded, the number would go over 20. Their independence movements are included mainly on social movements in late 1920’s, and agrarian union movement in early 1930’s. This is a quite rare case in racial movement for independence.
Sunsung Kim clan of Moosum town has participated in ‘Byung’ side(屛論) when ‘Byunghosibi(conflict between Byung and Ho)(屛虎是非)’ occurred. Most clans which has participated in Byung side generally shows its late join into racial movement. This fact has became the background foundation for their concentration into social movement of late 1920’s and agrarian union movement of early 1930’s. It seems there had been several channels between socialists of Youngjoo and youths of Sunsung Kim clan, and that should have been the clan’s route of accepting socialism. Most personages who had accepted socialism were members of most renowned clans of Moosum town. Therefore, we can find certain similarity from their acception of socialism with Andong district’s case.
The late 1920’s movement led by youths of Moosum town can be divided into two parts. In early 1928, they had devoted to the establishment of Pyeongeun branch of Youngjoo youth association. Their effort has succeeded to build the Pyeongeun branch as the third branch of Youngjoo youth association. From late 1928, Youths of Moosum town has became the main actors of socialism movments in Youngjoo district. Agenda distribution of International proletriate youths’ day by Kim Sungkyu(金性圭), dissolvement of Soonheung youth union led by Kim Hwa-jin(金華鎭), relief works in Youngjoo district, 2nd Youngjoo propaganda distribution are examples of their movements.
Meanwhile, Youths of Sunsung Kim clan has built a school ‘A do seo sook’ in their hometown Moosum to begin their education action. This school has set its main goals, which are illiteracy eradication campaign, national education and enhancing national consciousness. The school was mainly led by Youths of Sunsung Kim clan, and received its financial backups from donations of management committee. The management of ‘A do seo sook(亞島書塾)’ was deeply related with the committee. After ‘Youngjoo Communists Agrarian Struggle Association’ incident, it was abolished by Japanese government by force.
After propaganda distribution movement, youths of Sunsung has changed their line, from lawful social organization movement to secret resistance movement. Kim Hwa-jin has joined ‘Communists’ union of Youngjoo district’, which was an organization that has tried to carry on a linked movement with Yecheon and Bonghwa. However, only after few months from its foundation, it was abolished by Japanese government. After this incident, Agrarian movement linked with Andong Communist Group has occurred in Moosum. Although ‘Youngjoo Communists Agrarian Struggle Association’ was only a cell part of Andong Communist Group, it was mainly led by youths of Moosum. They had planned a mayday struggle which was allied with Andong and Bonghwa in May of 1933, but failed by Japanese government.
Independence movement of Sunsung Kim clan has started from the view of enlightener. However, they had to overcome the limitation of becoming minority. As most of the leaders who led the movement were members of renowned family, they had taken the publics has the target of enlightenment. Under the repeated arrestments and imprisonments, their struggle could not go on, because of their exclusive characteristic.
