초록

본고는 웹툰과 TV드라마 <이태원 클라쓰>를 비교 분석하여 매체 전환 과정에서 서사와 표현 방식의 재구성 양상을 탐구하였다. 이를 위해 크리스토퍼 보글러의 영웅서사 12단계와 셔레이드 기법을 이론적 틀로 삼아 웹툰과 TV드라마의 스토리텔링 차별성을 분석하였다.
웹툰은 세로 스크롤 형식과 간결한 이미지 중심의 서사를 통해 독자의 상상력을 자극하며 짧고 간결한 서사 전달 방식으로 사건을 압축적으로 구성한다. 반면 TV드라마는 긴 호흡과 시청각적 몰입을 강화하여 서사의 감정적 깊이와 인물 간의 관계를 입체적으로 재구성한다. 특히 TV드라마 <이태원 클라쓰>는 시련과 보상을 강화함으로써 영웅서사의 설득력을 높이고, 주변 인물의 역할과 심리적 변화를 더하며 내러티브의 완결성을 도모하였다. 주인공인 박새로이의 시련과 성장 과정을 중심으로 한 분석은 두 매체의 서사가 영웅서사 구조 안에서 어떻게 변주되고 강화되었는지 보여준다.
셔레이드 기법은 두 매체에서 핵심적인 스토리텔링 도구로 작용하였다. 웹툰은 칸을 활용한 구성과 색채로 인물의 감정과 갈등을 직관적으로 표현하는 반면, TV드라마는 조명, 색채, 음향 등 복합적인 시청각적 요소를 활용하여 인물의 심리와 서사적 긴장감을 더욱 심층적으로 표현하였다. 카메라 워크, 편집 기법 등을 통해 더 심화된 서사적 몰입과 공간 활용으로 웹툰의 평면적 셔레이드를 입체적 셔레이드로 발전시켰음을 확인하였다.
본고는 웹툰과 TV드라마의 매체적 특성과 서사적 변화를 다각도로 분석하였다. 그러나 특정 작품과 장르에 초점을 맞추어 연구 대상을 한정했다는 한계가 있다. 또한, 셔레이드 기법에 대한 분석이 연구자의 주관적 해석에 의존한다는 점에서 체계적이고 객관적인 방법론의 필요성이 제기된다. 후속 연구에서는 다양한 장르와 사례를 확장하여 매체 전환이 스토리텔링 방식에 미치는 영향을 더욱 심층적으로 분석하고, 이를 보완할 수 있는 이론적 틀을 확립하고자 한다. 이를 통해 매체 전환 스토리텔링 연구가 K-콘텐츠의 글로벌 확장 가능성과 사회문화적 맥락에서의 서사적 기여를 조명하는 데 기여할 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

영어초록

This study explores the reconstruction of narratives and expressive techniques during the media transition process by comparing the webtoon and TV drama <Itaewon Class>. Using Christopher Vogler’s twelve stages of the hero’s journey and the charade technique as theoretical frameworks, this study analyzes the storytelling differences between the two media.
The webtoon employs a vertical scroll format and concise, image-driven narratives to stimulate the reader's imagination, offering a compact and straightforward storytelling approach. In contrast, the TV drama emphasizes extended pacing and enhanced audiovisual immersion, reconstructing the emotional depth of the narrative and the relationships between characters in a more multidimensional way. Notably, the TV drama <Itaewon Class> enhances the tension and resolution stages to bolster the persuasiveness of the hero’s journey and enriches the roles and psychological dynamics of supporting characters, thereby achieving narrative completeness. The analysis of the protagonist Park Sae-ro-yi’s trials and growth highlights how the narratives in both media have been adapted and intensified within the hero’s journey framework.
The charade technique serves as a critical storytelling tool in both media. While the webtoon intuitively expresses emotions and conflicts through panel composition and colors, the TV drama employs lighting, color, sound, and other audiovisual elements to convey characters’ psychology and narrative tension in greater depth. Through camera work, editing techniques, and spatial utilization, the study confirms that the flat charades of the webtoon have been transformed into multidimensional charades in the TV drama.
This study provides a multifaceted analysis of the media-specific characteristics and narrative changes between webtoons and TV dramas. However, it acknowledges the limitation of focusing on a single work and genre, and the subjective nature of interpreting the charade technique suggests the need for systematic and objective methodologies. Future research should expand to diverse genres and cases to analyze the impact of media transitions on storytelling more comprehensively and establish theoretical frameworks to address these issues. Such research is expected to illuminate the contribution of media transition storytelling to the global expansion of K-content and its narrative significance within sociocultural contexts.
