오태석의 탈근대 역사극 — 역사의 현재화와 대안적 역사쓰기 (Postmodern Historical Plays by Tae-Seok Oh The Present Orientation of History and Alternative History Writing)

초록

본고는 자유분방한 역사적 상상력으로 역사를 해체, 유희, 재구성, 재창작하는 오태석의 탈근대 역사극에 초점을 맞추어 그의 역사 해석과 의미구조, 미학적 방법론을 고찰한다.
<태>(1974)는 공식 역사가 배제한 하위주체 여성, 특히 권력 관계에서 가장낮은 자리에 위치한 여종의 억압과 고통을 역사적 상상력으로 복원시킨다.
전쟁기억을 다룬 극 <산수유>(1980), <자전거>(1983), <운상각>(1990)은현실과 초현실, 합리와 비합리, 과거와 현재, 재현과 제의를 혼종한다. 특이한것은 그가 가해자의 입장에서 트라우마적 과거를 바라보며 가해자에 대한 용서를 통해 과거 극복을 제시한다는 점이다. 이는 ‘과거의 역사화’라는 역사인식에 바탕한 것으로 볼 수 있다.
한국 근현대사를 다룬 역사극 중 <도라지>(1994)는 김옥균 서사를 그리는데, 특히 홍종우를 새롭게 재해석하며 대안적 역사쓰기를 보여준다. <잃어버린 강>(2000)은 민족주의 서사로 일관하다 반민족담론으로 끝내는, 서사와 역사의식의 균열을 보인다. <천년의 囚人>(1998)은 3명의 테러리스트를 통해 현대사의 왜곡된 흐름을 성찰하며, 꿈과 블랙 코미디, 판타지, 인형극 등 놀이성을 적극 활용한다. <앞산아 당겨라 오금아 밀어라>(2003)는 제주 4.3사건을 기록과 증언에 바탕하여 그리는데, 기발한 상상력과 판타지, 놀이정신으로 기억의 담론 투쟁을 역동적으로 재현한다. 결말의 ‘디딤불미 놀이’는 축제성과 모성, 민중의 건강한 생명력으로 과거가 남긴 상처를 ‘치유’하는 퍼포먼스를 보여준다.

영어초록

This study focuses on postmodern historical plays by Tae-Seok Oh who disassembles,plays with, reorganizes, and recreates history using carefree historical imaginations,thereby examining his historical interpretation, semantic structures, and aestheticmethodologies.
<Tae(The Womb)>(1974) restores the oppression and suffering of women who weresubordinate subjects excluded by official history, and particularly, of female slavespositioned in the lowest place in power relations by using historical imaginations.
In <Sansuyu(Japanese Cornelian Cherry)>(1980), <The Bicycle>(1983), and <Unsanggak(Pavilion on the Clouds)>(1990), which deal with the memories of war, reality andunreality, rationality and irrationality, the past and the present, and representation andreconsideration are mixed and co-exist.
In “the place of memories” that he embodies on the stage, the living and the deadcommunicate with each other, the victim is reconciled with the perpetrator and ventshis/her spite, characters cross the boundary between this world and the world of thedead through exorcisms or dreams, the past and the present are created into montages,and the mutually infiltrating present orientation of history occurs.
Among his historical plays that have dealt with Korea's modern and contemporaryhistory, <Doraji(Ballon flower)>(1994) contains narratives of Ok-Gyun Kim, andparticularly, shows alternative history writing by reinterpreting Jong-Woo Hong in anew manner. <The Lost River>(2002) exhibits the fracture of narratives and historical consciousness by presenting nationalist narratives consistently, and then ending with ananti-nationalist discourse.
<Millenary Prisoners>(1998) reflects on the distorted flow of the contemporaryhistory via three terrorists, and actively utilizes playful characteristics such as dreams,black comedies, fantasies, and poppet shows. <Pull Ahp-san! Push Oh-gum!>(2003) isbased on the records and testimonies of the Jeju April 3 Incident, and dynamicallyreenacts the fight for a recollection discourse using novel imaginations, fantasies, and theplay spirit. “Didimbulmi Play” at the end shows a performance which “heals” scars leftby the past using festivity and motherhood, and the public's healthy vitality.
