『열하일기』에 나타난 판첸라마 접견 사건의 진실과 쓰기 전략 (The Truth and Writing Strategy in the Accounts of the Meeting with the Panchen Lama in “The Diary of Yeolha”)

초록

본고는 1780년, 중국 열하 지역의 건륭제 칠순 잔치에서 벌어진 조선 사신단의 판첸라마(반선) 접견 사건의 진실과 쓰기 전략을 이해하고자 한 것이다. 먼저 조선 사행단이 열하로 가기까지의 경위를 살피고 건륭제의 만수절 행사가 지닌 중요성을 살폈다. 그 당시 열하는 세계의 중심부로 외교 군사적 요충지였다. 건륭제가 열하에서 칠순 잔치를 벌인 것은 몽골과 티베트를 방어하기 위한 정치 외교적 전략이었다. 천신만고 끝에 열하에 도착한 사신단은 반선을 접견하라는 황제의 명령으로 인해 크게 당황했다. 성리학을 신봉하고 있던 조선 사회에서 이단의 지도자를 만난다는 것은 상당히 위험한 일이었다. 『열하일기』에서는 조선 사신이 반선에게 절을 하지 않았다고 기록했다. 하지만 열하 이야기는 사실을 그대로 옮긴 것이 아니라, 봉불지사(奉佛之使) 오명을 얻은 연암의 팔촌 형 박명원을 변호하기 위해 쓴 글이라는 주장이 제기되었다. 조선 사신은 실제로는 반선에게 절을 했고 박명원의 변호 효과를 극대화하기 위해 날짜를 재배치했으며, 황제의 연회 장면이라든가 반선의 접견 장면 등은 연암 자신이 직접 본 것이 아니라 전해 들은 이야기를 기록했다는 것이다. 이에 대해 다양한 각도에서 반론을 제기하고, 연암이 평소에 지향한 글쓰기 정신과 삶의 지향 및 연행의 목적 등을 종합적으로 고려할 때 반선에게 절을 하지 않았다는 『열하일기』 기록은 상당한 진실성을 지녔다고 보았다. 『찰십륜포』의 구성 논란에 대해서는 연암의 형식 미학과 쓰기 전략 차원에서 살펴보았다. 특정한 이데올로기에 갇히지 않고 세계를 편견 없이 보려는 연암의 의식은 반선을 둘러싼 사건에도 형상화되어 있다. 연암은 반선 접견에 대해 조선과 중국의 서로 다른 접근 태도를 보여줌으로써 강대국 중국의 노련한 통치술 및 유교 이데올로기에서 한 발자국도 벗어나지 못하는 조선의 현실을 보여줌과 동시에 조선 사행단을 변호하는 이중의 전략을 담아냈다. 조선 사행단과 건륭제, 반선의 초청을 다룬 연암의 기록에는 중국을 중심으로 한 국제질서를 조망하는 연암의 통찰력과 쓰기 전략이 빛나고 있다.

영어초록

This paper aims to uncover the truth and identify the writing strategies employed in the reports detailing the encounter between Chosun delegates and the Panchen Lama, Ban Seon. This significant meeting took place during the seventieth birthday celebration of Emperor Qianlong in the Yeolha region of China in 1780. First, this study examines the circumstances leading up to the Chosun delegates’ trip to Yeolha and the significance of the Qianlong Emperor’s Full Moon celebration. At that time, Yeolha was a diplomatic and military hub at the centre of the world. The Qianlong Emperor’s celebration of his seventieth birth feast in Yeolha was a political and diplomatic strategy to defend against Mongolia and Tibet. The delegates, who arrived in Yeolha after a long journey, were greatly embarrassed by the emperor’s order to meet with Ban Seon. In Chosun’s Neo-Confucian society, meeting with the leader of a heresy was quite dangerous. “The Diary of Yeolha” records that the Korean delegates did not bow to Ban Seon. However, it has been argued that this was not a verbatim account, but was written to defend Yeonam’s third cousin, Park Myung-won, who had been considered a Bolbuljeesa (Buddhist praiser), and that the Chosun delegates actually bowed to Ban Seon. The dates were changed to maximize the effectiveness of Park’s defense, and the scenes of the emperor’s banquet and Ban Seon’s meeting with the Chosun delegates were not Yeonam’s eyewitness testimony , but hearsay. This has been argued from various angles, and considering Yeonam’s typical writing spirit, life orientation, and the purpose of his accompany, it is concluded here that the account in “The Diary of Yeolha” that they did not bow to Ban Seon is highly likely to be true. The controversy over the composition of “Chalsyplyunpo” is then examined from the perspective of Yeonam’s formal aesthetics and writing strategy. Yeonam’s consciousness of seeing the world unbiasedly, without being trapped by a particular ideology, is also reflected in this event surrounding Ban Seon. By showing the different approaches of Chosun and China to the reception of Ban Seon, Yeonam pursues a dual strategy of showing the reality of Chosun’s inability to remain trapped in the ideology of Confucian, at once showing the cleverness of Chinese political governance while defending the Chosun delegates. Yeonam’s accounts of the Chosun delegation, the Qianlong Emperor, and the invitation to Ban Seon reveal his insights and writing strategies as he examined the international order centered on China.
