쓰기 과정 연구의 이론적 경향과 다원적 관점의 가능성 (Theoretical examination on the models of writing and the possibility of pluralistic perspectives)

초록

이 연구는 쓰기 과정에 대한 기존의 전제들이 일원적 관점에만 치우쳐 있다는 점에 문제를 제기하고, 다원적 관점의 필요성을 주장하였다. 여기서 일원적 관점이란 보편적이고 단일한 설명 체계로 현상을 이해하는 것을, 다원적 관점은 쓰기 과정이 다양한 양상으로 나타나게 되는 원리를 다루고자 함을 뜻한다. 일원적 관점의 대표적인 이론으로서 헤이즈와 플라워(Hayes & Flower, 1980)의 모형은 쓰기 과정의 인지적 연구의 가장 중요한 성과로 일컬어지고 있지만, 숙련된 전문가의 이상적인 쓰기 과정만을 모형화했다는 점, 그리고 글쓰기를 ‘사고의 일방적인 언어화 과정’으로 간주했다는 점에서 한계를 지닌다. 또 하나의 일원적 관점으로서 켈로그(Kellogg, 1996)의 모형은 헤이즈-플라워 모형에 비해 하위과정들 간의 관계를 구체적, 개연적으로 설명했다는 점에서 의미가 있지만, 여전히 ‘계획하기→번역하기’의 일방적 관계만을 다룬다는 점에서 한계를 지닌다. 반면에, 다원적 관점의 이론들은, 필자들의 쓰기 과정이 왜 달라지며, 어떤 점에서 달라지는지를 설명하고자 하였다. 베레이터와 스카다말리아(Bereiter & Scardamaila, 1987)는 미숙한 필자와 능숙한 필자의 쓰기 과정의 차이를 설명하였으며, 레일라르스담과 반 덴 베르흐(Rijlaarsdam & van den Bergh, 1996)는 쓰기 과정, 그중에서도 내용 생성하기와 관련하여 다양한 인지적 영향 관계들이 존재할 수 있음을 밝혔다. 한편, 갤브레이스(Galbraith)는 사고의 언어화로서의 문제-해결 과정 외에도 언어화 자체가 새로운 아이디어 생성을 이끄는 자의적 변증법의 과정에 주목하였으며(1999), 효율적 글쓰기에는 두 과정 모두 필요하다고 보았다(2009). 우리의 작문 교육과정이 주로 플라워-헤이즈 이론을 근간으로 삼았다는 점, 문제-해결 관점에 의거한 전략들이 때로 좋지 않은 전략이 될 수 있다는 점을 고려할 때, 다원적 관점을 반영하는 교육적 적용이 필요하다.

영어초록

This study aims to address the problem that the existing assumptions on the writing process are mainly focused on unitary perspectives and to insist on the necessity of pluralistic perspectives. Unitary perspectives imply understanding by a single descriptive system, whereas pluralistic perspectives imply understanding the principles that diversify writing processes. Hayes and Flower’s model (1980), the representative theory from the unitary perspective, is recognized as a pioneering and important achievement; however, it has limits because it models only skilled and ideal writing and the one-way transition from thought to translation. Kellogg’s model (1996), another unitary perspective, is assumed to be meaningful in that it explains the relationship among sub-processes in a detailed and plausible way compared to the Hayes-Flower model; however, it has limits because of the one-way relationship described as “planning→translation.” In contrast, theories from pluralistic perspectives try to explain why writing processes diversify and what kind of diversity they have. The double models of Bereiter and Scardamaila (1987) explain the differences in writing processes between skilled and unskilled writers. The model proposed by Rijlaarsdam and van den Bergh (1996) investigates the possibility of diverse influential relationships among cognitive activities. The knowledge-constituting model of Galbraith is focused on the dispositional dialectic that induces novel-idea generation (1999) as well as problem-solving processes; he also asserted that both processes are necessary for effective writing (2009). Considering that national writing curriculums in Korea have been mainly based on the Hayes-Flower model and its strategies have at times proven to be inappropriate—in terms of the problem-solving perspective—it is necessary to establish educational treatments that reflect the pluralistic perspectives.
