영문 그림책으로 다시 쓴 한국 전래동화의 현황과 과제 (The Status of Rewriting Korean Children's Stories into English Picture Books and Suggestions for Future Translation)

초록

본고에서는 미국시장에서 영어권독자를 대상으로 출판 유통되는 영문한국전래동화 그림책에 대해 살펴보았다. 먼저 작품들을 수집한 뒤 실물을 확인한 책들만 정보를 데이터베이스화했다. 그 결과 중복된 수를 합쳐 70편의 이야기가 출간되었다.
한국에 대한 애정을 가진 영어원어민들의 번역도 많았다. 학술적인 조사 후에영역본을 출간하는 경우도 있었다. 하지만 여전히 19세기말~20세기 초의 영문설화집의 영향력은 아직도 지속되고 있음을 보았고, 성의 없는 재출간본들은 한국전래동화에 대한 안좋은 인상만 남기고 있었다.
또한 번역의 문제가 아닌 설화 내용에 대한 독자들의 평 중에서는 나쁜 평도꽤 있었다. 이는 한국문화의 문제라기보다는 어른들의 설화를 어린이독자에 맞게개작하지 않았기 때문이다.
그림책에 담긴 삽화들이 국적불명인 부분에 대한 불평도 많았는데, 이는 한국인원어민의 자문이 필요한 부분이다. 또한 새로운 구성으로 이야기를 개작하거나, 킨들북의 형태, 만화책으로 출간하는 경우도 있는데, 호응이 좋았다.
앞으로 영문한국전래동화 그림책이 영향력을 가지려면, 국가차원의 영어번역에의 지원, 출판관련자들에 대한 한국문화의 자문이라는 거시적인 차원의 지원과 함께 한국설화 전공자와 아동문학전공자의 이야기 선정ㆍ개작단계에의 개입이 필요하다. 우리가 가진 좋은 자산을 제대로 소개할 수 있게 되기를 바란다.

영어초록

This study examines traditional Korean children’s stories that have been translated into English picture books, published, and circulated for English readers in the U.S. market. The author collected such stories and put the information in the books seen by the author into a database. In total, 70 Korean children’s stories have been published as English picture books.
It is noted that many of the children's stories were translated by English native speakers who have great interest in the Korean culture. The English versions of some of the books were published after conducting academic research. However, the author could find the lasting impact of English storybooks that had been published from the late 19th to the early 20th centuries on the English versions of Korean children’s stories. Furthermore, the author felt that poorly translated versions of such books gave their readers a bad impression of traditional Korean children’s stories.
There were many comments from readers on the contents of Korean tales, rather than their translations. It is not because there were problems in the traditional Korean culture per se but because Korean tales that were originally intended for adults were not revised appropriately to meet the level of child readers.
In addition, many readers complained that some of the illustrations in the picture books did not depict the cultural characteristics of Korea, because of which the translations of Korean children’s stories required advice from native Korean speakers. Some Korean children’s stories were recomposed and published as electronic books available on Kindle and cartoon books, which have elicited good responses from readers.
Popularizing the English picture books that are translations of traditional Korean children's stories requires not only the support of the Korean government and individuals working in the publication industry but also the involvement of experts majoring in Korean tales and children's literature. The author hopes that Korea’s excellent cultural assets will be introduced to foreign countries in an appropriate manner.
