〈펜트하우스〉가 쏘아올린 ‘위험한’ 공 - 방송환경 변화에 따른 지상파 방송국 생존 방식이 지닌 의미 (A “dangerous” ball launched by - The implications of the way terrestrial broadcasters survive according to the changing broadcasting environment)

초록

본 논문의 목적은 드라마 <Penthouse> 텍스트를 분석하는 것이 아니라 방송 환경의 변화에 대응하는 지상파의 전략을 고찰하는 차원에서 <Penthouse>를 다룬다. 국내 방송 환경의 변화는 지상파와 케이블, 종편과 같은 비지상파 채널이 거의 동등한 위치에 놓일 수 있는 조건을 제공했다. tvN과 같은 케이블 방송사와 종합편성 채널은 예전에는 시청률 경쟁에서 지상파 방송사들과는 상대가 될 수 없었다. 하지만 방송 환경 변화로 인해 케이블, 종합편성 채널은 차별화된 소재와 화제성 그리고 시청률과 팬덤에서 지상파 방송국과 대등한 위치를 차지하게 되었다. 또한 OTT 서비스의 출현은 지상파 방송국만이 아니라 비지상파 방송국까지 이전에는 경험하지 못했던 새로운 환경을 만들었다. OTT의 대표격인 Netflix는 ‘콘텐츠와 테크놀로지의 결합’ 그리고 ‘오리지널 콘텐츠에 대한 과감하고도 지속적인 투자와 제작’을 통해 경쟁력을 확보했다. 압도적인 자본력을 앞세운 오리지널 콘텐츠의 제작 그리고 인공지능과 Human resorce가 결합된 테크놀로지에 기반을 둔 콘텐츠 관련 데이터의 활용 방식은 넷플릭스의 시장지배력이 앞으로 엄청나게 확대될 것임을 잘 보여준다.
급속도로 변화하는 방송 환경은 지상파 방송사에게는 매우 불리하다. 최근 지상파 방송사에서 인기리에 방영되었던 <펜트하우스>는 막장 드라마의 계보에 있으면서도 ‘이벤트 보기’와 ‘메타 추리’ 방식의 활용은 그들이 변화된 환경에서 살아남는 방식의 하나로 이해할 수 있다. 드라마의 빠른 전개 속도는 시청자가 내러티브의 허술함을 인식하게 못하게 만들면서 다음에는 어떤 사건이 일어날지를 ‘때려맞히는’ 소위 ‘이벤트 보기’에 집중하게 만든다. 빈번한 반전으로 인해 희생된 내러티브의 개연성으로 인해 시청자의 시청 문법은 파괴되고 기괴한 방식의 보기를 권하는 결과를 초래한 것이다. <펜트하우스>를 시청하면서 느끼는 흥미와 즐거움의 본질은 극의 전개에서 다음 이벤트가 무엇인지를 맞히는 쾌감이다. 따라서 이러한 방식은 필연적으로 작가의 아이디어가 무엇인지를 추리하는 일종의 ‘메타 추리’의 성격을 띠게 된다. 변형된 막장 드라마인 <펜트하우스>는 콘텐츠 제작과 소비 패턴에서 급격한 변화를 겪고 있는 방송 환경 그리고 이러한 변화의 흐름에서 살아남아야 하는 지상파의 벼랑 끝 전략이 만들어낸 기형적 형태의 산물일 수도 있다.

영어초록

The purpose of this thesis is not to analyze the text of the drama <Penthouse>, but to deal with <Penthouse> from the perspective of examining the strategy of terrestrial waves responding to changes in the broadcasting environment. Changes in the domestic broadcasting environment provided conditions for terrestrial, cable, and non-terrestrial channels such as long-distance channels to be placed in an almost equal position. Cable broadcasters such as tvN and comprehensive programming channels could not compete with terrestrial broadcasters in the audience rating competition in the past. However, due to changes in the broadcasting environment, cables and comprehensive channels now occupy an equal position with terrestrial broadcasting stations in differentiated materials, topics, audience ratings, and fandom. In addition, the emergence of OTT service has created a new environment that has not been experienced before, not only for terrestrial broadcasting stations but also for non-terrestrial broadcasting stations. Netflix, the representative of OTT, has secured competitiveness through'combination of content and technology' and'drastic and continuous investment and production in original content'. The production of original content with overwhelming capital power and the use of content-related data based on technology that combines artificial intelligence and human resource show that Netflix's market power will be enormously expanded in the future.
The rapidly changing broadcasting environment is very disadvantageous for terrestrial broadcasters. <Penthouse>, which was recently aired in popularity by terrestrial broadcasters, is in the genealogy of the soap-opera, but the use of 'viewing events' and 'meta reasoning' can be understood as one of the ways in which they survive in a changed environment. The rapid development of the drama makes viewers less aware of the laxity of the narrative, while concentrating on the so-called “viewing events” that “guessing” what will happen next. Due to the probability of the narrative sacrificed due to frequent reversals, the viewer's viewing grammar was destroyed, resulting in a result of recommending a bizarre way of viewing. The essence of the interest and pleasure you feel while watching <Penthouse> is the pleasure of guessing what the next event will be in the development of the play. Therefore, this method inevitably takes on the character of a kind of 'meta reasoning' that infers what the artist's idea is. <Penthouse>, which is a transformed soap-opera, may be a product of a deformed form created by a broadcasting environment undergoing rapid changes in content production and consumption patterns, and a strategy on the edge of a terrestrial wave that must survive these changes.
