「장복선전」에 나타난 이옥의 문제의식 고찰 - 심노숭의 「사가야화기」, 정약용의 「방친유사」와의 비교를 중심으로 (A Study on a Critical Mind of Lee, Ok in 「Jang Bok - Seon Jeon」 - Focusing on a Comparison with 「Sagayawhagi」 by Sim, No - Sung and 「Bangchinyusa」 by Jeong, Yag - Yong)

초록

이옥은 당대 사회의 모순을 직시하고 문학 작품을 통해 그것의 극복을 위해 노력했지만, 그가 제시한 방안은 자신의 지위를 벗어나지 못한 한계가 있었다. 그리고 이옥이 공금을 유용하여 백성을 구휼한 장복선을 유협으로 입전한 「장복선전」은, 유협의 보편적 개념을 근간으로 이의 없이 수용되었다. 그런데 일반 백성을 구제하여 사회 정의를 실현하는 유협은 시대적 산물로서 당대의 정세나 작가의 의식에 따라 이해되는 방식이 달라서 그 유형이 일률적이지 않은 것처럼, 「장복선전」도 당대의 사회 현실과 작가 이옥의 염원 및 상상력이 결합된 작품으로 여타의 유협전과는 구별되는 특성을 포함하고 있었다. 본고는 이러한 특성을 파악하기 위해 「장복선전」에 나타난 장복선의 행적을, 심노숭의 「사가야화기」와 정약용의 「방친유사」에 묘사된 장복상의 행적과 비교하였다. 그리고 장복선이 보여 준 유협적 면모의 특성을 재조명하여 그것의 의미를 밝히고, 「장복선전」의 가치를 제고할 수 있는 요인을 증명하였다.
우선 세 작품에는 공통적으로 궁핍했지만 베풀기를 좋아했던 장복선 또는 장복상이 공금 유용이라는 자기희생을 통해 어려운 사람들을 도와주었다는 역사적 사실이 기술되어 있었다. 그렇지만 「장복선전」은 장복선을 백성을 구제하여 사회 정의를 실현한 유협으로 칭송한 반면, 「사가야화기」는 장복상을 밤에 모여 나누는 가벼운 이야깃거리에 등장하는 인물 정도로, 「방친유사」는 장복상을 동지공의 유협적 면모를 전하는 이야기에 등장하는 부수적 인물로 묘사하였다. 이처럼 하나의 역사적 사실이 세 가지의 서사적 진실로 서술된 것은, 이옥ㆍ심노숭ㆍ정약용 세 작가의 문제의식이 차이가 있었기 때문이었다.
다음으로 「장복선전」에 나타난 장복선의 유협적 면모의 특성을 밝히기 위해서, 다음의 두 관점을 중심으로 세 작품에 서술된 장복선의 행적의 공통점과 차이점을 고찰하였다. 첫째, 유협의 행위 준칙의 준수 여부를 중심으로 장복선의 행적을 살펴보았다. 그 결과 장복선은 사회적 준칙보다 개인의 준칙을 당당히 따르는 여타의 유협 내지 의인과는 달리, 구휼이라는 목적과 공금 유용이라는 수단 사이에서 심리적으로 갈등했음을 찾아냈다. 그리고 이를 통해 이옥이 장복선을 유협으로 인정한 동시에 유협이 사회 정의를 실현하는 과정에서 겪을 수 있는 인간적 갈등을 부각하여 보편적인 인간의 삶의 단면을 보여 주고자 했으며, 백성의 삶의 질곡을 야기하는 당대 현실의 장벽이 높고 견고함을 드러내고자 했음을 추론하였다. 둘째, 세 작품은 평안 감사 채제공이 장복선의 구휼을 인정하고 그를 석방한 사실은 공통적이나, 「장복선전」은 장복선과의 연대 범주가 일반 백성뿐만 아니라 무관을 포함하여 상층을 상징하는 채제공까지 확장된 것이 특징적이었다. 이를 통해 이옥이 하층부터 상층까지 전 계층이 소통과 합의를 기반으로 연대하여 백성의 삶의 질곡과 사회적 모순을 파악하고 그것을 해결하자고 제언하였음을 밝혔다.

영어초록

Lee, Ok faced up to the social contradiction of the day and made greater efforts to overcome it through literary works, but plans which he presented had limits because he did not get out of his status. 「Jang Bok-Seon Jeon」 that he created showed Jang, Bok-Seon misused public money and helped the poor by self-sacrifice, so Lee, Ok acknowledged Jang, Bok-Seon as a chivalrous person. His critical mind has been accepted on the basis of the universal concept of the chivalrous persons without argument. However the types of the chivalrous persons were not uniform, because the chivalrous person who relieved people and realized social justice was a creature of the times and was understood differently by the state of affairs of the day or writer consciousness. 「Jang Bok-Seon Jeon」 also included distinguishing features, because the work was combined with social reality of the day and wish or imagination of Lee, Ok. To grasp the features, I made a comparison between Jang, Bok-Seon’s trace of the past of 「Jang Bok-Seon Jeon」 and Jang, Bok-Sang’s trace of the past of 「Sagayawhagi」 by Sim No-Sung and 「Bangchinyusa」 by Jeong, Yag-Yong. And then I reinterpreted the feature of the aspects as the chivalrous person that Jang, Bok-Seon showed, determined its meaning, and attested to main factor to raise the value of 「Jang Bok-Seon Jeon」.
Fist of all, three works said in common that Jang, Bok-Seon who was poor but liked doing an act of charity, helped the poor by self-sacrifice misusing public money. By the way 「Jang Bok-Seon Jeon」 praised Jang, Bok-Seon as the chivalrous person for relieving people and realizing social justice, while Jang, Bok-Sang was described as a character of small conversation at night in 「Sagayawhagi」, and Jang, Bok-Sang was described as a supporting character of the story to tell the aspects of the chivalrous person of DongJiGong in 「Bangchinyusa」. I explained that one historical fact about the trace of the past of Jang, Bok-Seon was changed three descriptive facts on account of critical minds of three writers.
In sequence, to understand the aspects of the chivalrous person of Jang, Bok-Seon of 「Jang Bok-Seon Jeon」, I analyzed similarities and differences of the trace of the past of Jang, Bok-Seon in three works on the basis of two points of view. First, I examined the trace of the past of Jang, Bok-Seon by obey of rule of action of the chivalrous person. Unlikely the general chivalrous person or righteous person that bravely followed individual rule not social rule, Jang, Bok-Seon psychologically conflicted between the purpose of relief and the method of misusing public money. Through those descriptive facts, Lee, Ok acknowledged Jang, Bok-Seon as the chivalrous person, and tried to demonstrated humane conflicts of the chivalrous person experiencing in the process of realizing social justice and show a slice of life of universal human. I also inferred that the barrier of reality of the day brought on the fetters of life of people was high and strong through it. Second, three works commonly said that Pyeongan envoy Chae, Je-Gong acknowledged relief of Jang, Bok-Seon and released him, however the category of solidarity with Jang, Bok-Seon was distinctively extended from people and officer class to Chae, Je-Gong symbolizing the upper class in 「Jang Bok-Seon Jeon」. I found that Lee, Ok suggested that all class from the lower class to the upper class should band together on the basis of communication and agreement, apprehend the fetters of life of people and social contradictions, and solve them.
