효행 표상으로서의 심청의 죽음과 애도 (Simcheong’s Death as a Symbol of Filial Piety and Mourning)

초록

이 연구에서는 완판71장본 <심청전>을 연구대상으로 애도를 중심으로 효행 표상으로의 심청의 죽음을 읽어보았다. 심청전에서 죽음이 가지는 의미를 애도로 해독해보기 위해 심청과 효, 효행을 분리, 효행에 무게를 두어 심청의 죽음을 다루었다. 죽음이 곧 효가 아니라 여러 효행 중 하나임을 전제로 먼저 데리다의 ‘차연’을 기본 골격으로 효의 의미가 효행으로 인해 유동성을 가질 수 있음을 살펴보았다. 심청의 죽음이 바느질과 동냥, 공양 등과 다르지 않은 효행 중 하나일 수 있음을 분명히 한 후, 심청의 죽음이 ‘이효행상효’로 읽힐 수 있다고 제안했다. 그에 따라 죽음이 곧 효의 표상이 되는 것에 대한 의미 확대 해석을 경계했다.
효행을 이행하는 효녀의 상징 또는 효행 표상으로서의 심청의 죽음은 죽음의 주체가 심청인지 효행인지 명확하지 않게 했다. 이러한 불분명함은 계속해서 심청과 효행을 상기하는 등장인물들의 행동으로 이어졌고, 이는 독자와 등장인물이 애도의 단계에 진입하지 못하게 하는 이유가 되었다. 상실 대상의 불분명함으로 인해 발생한 심청과 심청의 효행에 대한 등장인물의 끊임 없는 반추는 심청의 죽음을 실재하지 못하게 했다. 이는 또 하나의 애도 실패 이유가 되었다.
효행 표상으로의 심청의 죽음에 대한 애도는 이루어지지 않았다. 죽음으로인해 발생한 감정이 해결되지 않음으로 인해 <심청전>은 긴장감이 맴도는 상태에 멎어 있게 되었다. 애도의 상실은 ‘환생’이라는 장치와 그 이후 에피소드들로 대리보충 되었다. 이러한 서사 구성은 문학적 완성도를 높이면서 감정적 카타르시스도 불러왔다.

영어초록

This study analyses the meaning of Simcheong’s death in Simcheong-jeon, based on the concept of mourning. For the analysis, the Wanpan (Chonju) edition with 71 pages is used. First, the study elaborately distinguishes the main character Simcheong’s acts of filial piety. Second, it lists each of these acts to show the liquid meaning of filial piety. Third, it presents different aspects of Simcheong- jeon’s characters’ mourning and thereby the implications of the story after Simcheong’s death.
The analysis applies Jacques Derrida’s concepts of différance and mourning, demonstrating that each act of filial piety procrastinates the meaning of filial piety itself, which results in adding of its meaning. In this context, death is understood as an act of filial piety. It prevents the interpretation of suicide as an act of filial piety from being understood as competing entire filial piety. Different from existing academic research that interprets Simcheong’s suicide as ruining filial piety, this analysis clarifies that Simcheong’s death can influence the image of the current rigid meaning of filial piety but not completely damage it. It challenges the fixed point of view that identifies Simcheong’s death with filial piety.
The object of Simcheong’s death is not clear; it contains three objects: the authentic main character Simcheong, the acts of filial piety, and the concept of filial piety. This renders the object of the character’s death ambiguous; the characters’ and readers’ mourning process unresolved, as they recall Simcheong who is already dead. Jacques Derrida thinks that the mourning process is complete when one accepts the dead as himself/herself and lets himself/herself be. However, in this story, the characters recall memories of Simcheong to internalize the character’s death; thus, their mourning processes remain unresolved, from Jacques Derrida’s point of view.
Mourning for the death of Simcheong, as a symbol for filial piety, is not achieved; emotional tensions are not relieved, and Simcheong-jeon is bound in a state of unsolved emotions. This unresolved situation is supplemented with the stories that follow, after Simcheong’s death, such as the rebirth of Simcheong, punishment, and compensation. These resolve the unsettled emotions among the characters in Simcheong-jeon, which results in catharsis, as literary effect.
