초록

This paper is to examine the relationship between Parnell and Phoenix in "Ivy Day in the Committee Room" written by James Joyce. He described Charles Strewart Parnell, who was an Irish Parliamentary Party leader, as "Rise, like the Phoenix from the lames" in the 10th line of "The Death of Parnell, 6th October 1891" by Joe Hynes. He described Parnell as running parallel to Phoenix in this work.
Because myth is the expression for a profound sense of togetherness of feeling of action, and of wholeness of living in human society, it transcends time, uniting the past with the present and reaching toward the future. I think Joyce used Phoenix to describe Parnell. In this point of view, the reader ought to understand Joyce's acquaintance with Carl C. Jung, who treated Joyce's daughter, Lucia, for a short time regarding her mental illness. He asked Joyce for analyzing his mentality. However, he refused to personally undergo analysis by Jung.
Accordingly, we can understand that Joyce wrote this work with thus myth to reproduce Ireland's reality in order to reveal Parnell's immortality as similar to Phoenix.
