초록

곽학송은 몇 편의 전후소설로만 기억되는 작가였다. 하지만 그의 소설에서는 전쟁에 대한 진지한 천착보다는 남녀 간의 애욕의 문제가 주로 다루어졌다. 정비석 『자유부인』 논쟁이나 박인수 사건으로 대표되듯이, 1950~60년대에는 댄스, 성, 정조, 연애, 아프레게르, 매춘 등 성 풍속의 문란이 문화적 활기와 함께 나타났고, 선정적인 남녀 문제로 대중을 자극하는 소설들도 덩달아 인기를 끌었다. 그간 연보에서 누락되었던 곽학송의 수많은 대중소설들은 이러한 문화적 요인을 반영하고 있다. 그렇다고 본격･순수 소설을 썼던 곽학송이 대중･통속 소설로 외도를 했었던 것이라 말할 수는 없다. 곽학송은 초기의 전후소설에서부터 전쟁(전후)과 남녀의 문제를 연결 지어 사고하고 있었다.
곽학송의 소설에는 ‘남성의 지배-여성의 순종’이라는, 남녀 사이에 개재하는 젠더의 역학 관계가 등장한다. 그 양상은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 두 남자와 한 여자가 형성하는 삼각관계가 빈번히 드러나는데, 이 삼각관계는 두 남자가 힘, 용기, 진취성 등의 남성성을 겨루고 과시하고자 하는 데서 시작된다. 전쟁터나 전후의 현실을 배경으로 하면서도 그와 상관없이 세 남녀는 연애, 성관계, 불륜 등을 벌인다. 두 남자 사이에 낀 여성은 그들의 관계에 영향력을 행사하지 못하는 정적이고 수동적인 인물이다. 이때 전쟁 혹은 전후라는 배경은 사회, 문화, 역사적으로 남자들에게 요구되어 온 남성성을 더욱 극명하게 드러내는 장치이다. 둘째, 손찌검, 강간, 근친상간과 같은 폭력적 성이 자주 등장한다. 가부장제 사회를 유지하기 위한 장치 중의 하나가 가장 사적인 영역인 성적인 지점에서 드러나는 폭력성이다. 여성은 부당한 폭력을 당하면서도 그것의 비정상성에 대해 문제를 제기하지 않는다. 여성에 대한 신체 억압은 남성다움의 지속 생산을 위한 사회적인 장치였기 때문이다. 셋째, 여성의 순결 문제가 ‘순정물’, ‘현대물’ 등의 연애소설에서는 물론, 이와는 판이한 성격의 추리소설에서도 사건의 시작, 전개, 해결의 중요한 틀이 된다. 부권(父權)이 강조되는 사회에서 여성의 순결과 지조는 관리의 대상이었다. 곽학송(혹은 동시대 사람들)이 드러냈던 순결 집착은 사회 구조 유지와 관련되는 문제였던 것이다.
곽학송 소설에 드러나는 남녀 문제의 근간에는 어떤 식으로든 전쟁의 영향이 작동하고 있다는 점에서 곽학송은 ‘전쟁과 젠더’의 문제―전쟁이라는 구조가 재생산하는 젠더의 역할, 전쟁이 지니는 폭력성과 상동적인 사회 구조의 유지 등―를 사고했던 작가라 할 수 있다. 남성 우위의 사회 구조에 대해 작가의 비판적 인식은 드러나지 않지만, 심리적으로 유약하거나 우유부단한 인물들을 통해 흔들리는 의식을 보여주기도 하였다. 곽학송은 한국전쟁이라는 특수한 상황에 대한 탐구보다는 전쟁의 본질적 속성을 통해 남성과 여성의 젠더 배치라는 측면에 더 많은 관심을 두었던 작가였다고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

Gwak Hak-song used to be remembered for his few post-war novels, usually addressing the matters of love and desire between man and woman in his stories rather than making a serious inquiry into war. The 1950s an 1960s witnessed the emergence of disorder in sex customs including dance, sex, chastity, dating, Apres Guerre, and prostitution along with cultural vitality. Good examples include the controversy over Madam Freedom by Jeong Bi-seok and the Park In-su event. Novels stimulating the public with lascivious man and woman issues also gained popularity. Many of Gwak's popular novels, which were omitted from the records of his career, reflect those cultural factors. However, it does not mean that he went astray with popular novels after writing serious and pure novels. In his early post-war novels, he looked at the war(post-war) in relation to man and woman issues.
His novels present gender-based dynamic relations between man and woman in the form of "man's dominance-woman's obedience." They take the three following patterns: first, a love triangle among two men and a woman makes frequent appearances in his novels. Such a love triangle begins with two men vying against each other in masculinity such as power, courage, and progressive spirit. In the background of such reality as battlefield and post-war situation, two men and a woman engage in dating, sexual relationships, and adulterous relationships regardless of reality. The woman between the two men is a static, passive character having no influence on their relationships. Here, the war or post-war background serves as a device to make masculinity, which has been required from man socially, culturally, and historically, even more apparent. Secondly, his novels include many cases of violent sex such as hitting, rape, and incest. Violence exercised at sexual points, the most private place, is one of the devices to maintain a patriarchal society. Women are subject to unjust violence but do not raise a question about its abnormal nature because the physical oppression of women is a social device to continue the production of what is masculine. Finally, the issue of female chastity itself becomes an important framework for the beginning, development, and resolution of an event not only in love stories such as "boy-meets-girl stories" and "modern stories" but also in detective novels of a very different nature. In a society where paternal authority was emphasized, female chastity and fidelity used to be the objects of management. The obsession with chastity of Gwak(and his contemporaries) had something to do with the maintenance of social structure.
Gwak is considered as a writer who dealt with the issues of "war and gender"-such as the roles of gender reproduced by the structure of war and the maintenance of social structure equal to the violence of war- in that there is the influence of war at the root of man and woman issues in any ways in his novels. Even though he showed no criticism of male-dominated social structure, he depicted shaking consciousness with psychologically weak or indecisive characters. Gwak invested more interest in the gender arrangement between man and woman through the essential attributes of war rather than exploring the unique situations of the Korean War.
