호남지역 마한·백제 토기가마의 특징과 신기술 도입양상 (Characteristics of the Mahan and Baekje Pottery Kilns in the Honam Area, and Aspects of the Introduction of New Technologies)

초록

본고는 호남지역 마한·백제 토기가마의 최신 조사·연구현황 재정리하여 토기가마의 특징을 분포와 구조, 생산과 유통체계를 통해 살펴보고 신기술 도입양상에 대한 견해를 제시해 보고자 한다.
호남지역 토기가마는 취락 내 자체 공급을 주된 목적으로 소규모로 분포하거나 독립된 대규모 생산공간을갖춘 전문 토기생산집단을 형성한 경우로 구분된다. 가마의 구조는 Ⅰ기에는 반지하식 축조방식이 소형급 가마에 주로 적용되었으며, Ⅱ기에는 가마의 규모가 대형화되고 경질토기 생산이 일반화되면서 지하식 축조방식의 확인 사례가 증가하는 모습을 보인다. 수요의 급증에 따른 생산량 증대를 위한 사회경제적 목적이 가마에 적용된 것으로 열효율을 높이기 위한 내부시설이 추가되는 양상을 보인다. 영산강유역에서는 수직연소식구조가 추가된 3-2형식과 소성부의 계단식 바닥구조가 추가된 2-2형식 가마와 같은 새로운 구조가 토기 생산집단을 통해 도입된다.
토기 생산체계는 성형과 소성공정이 분리된 비전업·반전업 단계에서 전문생산집단을 통해 전업화되는 모습이 관찰된다. 취락 내 반전업 생산체계는 협역유통으로 Ⅰ기에는 반경 1~2㎞, Ⅱ기에는 반경 2~4㎞로 범위가 확대된다. 토기 전문생산집단의 전업생산체계는 광역유통으로 15~30㎞의 넓은 범위에 해당하며 유통범위와 가마구조의 차이를 통해 생산집단을 운영하고 공유한 지역성을 구분할 수 있다.
토기가마를 통한 소성기술의 도입은 타날문토기 확산을 의도한 사회경제적 요인이 작용한 것으로 판단된다. 토기가마 이전의 경질무문토기 소성유구는 구형의 평면형태와 바닥경사면, 점토를 덮은 소성흔적 등을통해 밀폐식 가마구조를 직접 도입하지는 않았지만 가마에 대한 인지정보를 바탕으로 간접 적용된 증거로 보인다. 이후 토기가마 소성기술은 생산품의 안전성 확보와 생산량 향상을 목적으로 3~4세기 무렵 전국적으로확산되는데, 중국 남방지역의 장타원형 평면형태와 바닥경사면, 북방지역의 단시설과 짧은 요체, 지하굴착식축조법 등이 다원적 경로를 통해 반영된 결과로 해석된다. 생산기종의 다양화와 생산량의 증대는 가마 구조의다변화로 이어지면서 지하식 축조방식, 수직연소식 연료투입방식, 계단식 바닥시설과 같은 신기술이 호남지역 Ⅱ기 토기가마에 도입되었다. 특히 수직연소식 구조는 파주·진천일원에 유입된 낙랑 제도기술이 파급되는과정에서 충청지역이 매개체가 되어 호남지역에는 5세기 중엽 광주 행암동 생산집단을 중심으로 도입되고 주변 취락에 기술정보가 제공되면서 확산된 것으로 판단된다.

영어초록

This study focuses on the characteristics of the pottery kilns of Mahan and Baekje that have been discovered in the Honam area, based on the results of the latest excavation and research, including the distribution and structure of the kilns as well as the production and distribution system operated for the kilns. It also deals with various aspects related with the introduction of new technologies.
The pottery kilns in the Honam area can be divided into two groups according to their size and productivity: small kilns operated to meet the domestic demand of the settlements with which they were affiliated, and large, more productive kilns run by potters with specialized knowledge and skills. As regards the structure of the kilns, the kilns in Period I were marked by a semi-subterranean, and comparatively small, structure, whereas those in Period II tended to feature larger, and increasingly subterranean, furnaces which were used to produce hard-plain pottery. Over time, facilities were gradually added to the kilns to improve their thermal efficiency, reflecting the socio-economic goal of increasing production to meet the rapidly growing demand. The pottery production group in the Yeongsangang River basin adopted new structures for their kilns, such as the 3-2 Type, to which a structure designed for vertical firing was added, and the 2-2 Type, whose furnace had a stepped floor.
The pottery production system is observed to become professional through specialized production groups in the non-professional and semi-professional stages where molding and firing processes are separated. Of the two, the semi-professional production system operated within a settlement was based on a narrow-range distribution, supplying products across an area with a radius of just 1 to 2 kilometers (Stage I) and gradually extending it to 2 to 4 kilometers (Stage II). The professional production system operated by professional potters was based on a wide-range distribution, covering an area with a radius of 15 to 30 kilometers. These differences in the range of distribution and the kiln structures have helped archaeologists to identify the areas covered by each group of professional potters.
The introduction of new firing techniques in the course of the development of pottery kilns seems to have been related with socio-economic factors related with the need to spread beating patterned pottery. The extant features associated with the pottery firing that produced hard-plain pottery before the introduction of the pottery kiln are marked by ditch shapes with a sloped floor and a clay covering, providing evidence of an indirect application of the cognitive information of pottery kiln, although these features are not parts of a closed kiln structure. The firing techniques used by these pottery kilns were spread to nationwide sometime between the third and fourth centuries by those seeking product safety and improved production, as suggested by the kilns with a long elliptical form with a sloped floor discovered in the southern part of China, the kilns with a stepped floor and a short furnace, and those with a subterranean tunnel-type structure in the northern area. Diversification of the vessels and improved productivity led to greater complexity in the kiln structure, resulting in the introduction of new technical features - such as the subterranean furnace, vertical firing, and the stepped floor - to the Stage II kilns in the Honam area. Of the new features, the structure designed for vertical firing was introduced to the Chungcheong area when the pottery techniques from Nangnang advanced southward to the areas around Paju and Jincheon, before arriving in the Honam area in the mid-fifth century, where it was spread widely by potters based in the area Haengam-dong in Gwangju.
