본 논문은 1990년대 이후 일본학계의 『일본서기(日本書紀)』 연구동향과 주요 쟁점을 정리하고, 세부적으로 한국 고대사와도 밀접한 신공기(神功紀)･응신기(應神紀)･인덕기(仁德紀)에 관한 연구성과를 소개한 것이다.
1장에서는 최근 『일본서기』 연구의 주요 쟁점과 경향을 살펴보았다. 문헌 분야에서는 출전론(出典論), 텍스트론, 구분론(區分論), 편수론(編修論)으로 나누어 정리했고, 고고학 분야에서는 7세기 목간 자료와 『일본서기』 연구의 상관관계를 다루었다.
2장 1절에서는 신공기･응신기･인덕기에 관한 연구동향을 정리했다. 3명의 천황에 관한 설화의 형성과정이나 후대의 윤색, 인물상(人物像)에 관한 연구가 두드러지며, 텍스트 자체에 대한 연구도 적지 않다. 2장 2절에서는 신공기･응신기･인덕기의 한국관계기사에 관한 연구를 정리했다. 특히 1990년대 이후의 고고학 성과를 토대로 한 도래인(渡來人) 연구, 텍스트 비판을 통해 5세기 국제관계를 새롭게 조망하려는 시도가 눈에 띈다.
최근 일본학계의 연구는 대체로 『일본서기』를 통한 당대사의 복원보다는 텍스트 자체나 편찬 시점의 사정에 주목하고 있다. 『일본서기』에 8세기 율령국가의 관념이 투영되어 많은 윤색이 이루어졌기 때문이다. 그렇지만 고고학 성과나 새로운 사료비판 방법론을 토대로 『일본서기』의 내용을 재인식하려는 시도 또한 이루어지고 있어 향후 주목해보아야 할 것이다.

영어초록

Examined in this article is how Nihonshoki(日本書紀) has been studied in Japan since the 1990s, and what have been the main points of contention. Also presented here are studies of “Jin’gu-ki(神功紀),” “Oh’ujin-ki(應神紀)” and “Nintoku-ki(仁德紀)” chapters, which also contain references related to the ancient history of Korea.
In part 1 of this article, trends and contention points recently featured in Nihonshoki studies are first examined. Regarding studies that dealt with the Nihonshoki text itself, those which focused on all the sources cited(出典論), or the contents of the text, how it was structured(區分論) and how it was compiled(編修論) are reviewed. Meanwhile, for archaeological studies the relationship between Nihonshoki studies and the 7th century wooden “Mokgan” tablets is spotted and reviewed.
Next, in the first half of this article’s part 2, individual studies of the “Jin’gu-ki,” “Oh’ujin-ki” and “Nintoku-ki” chapters are examined. Many of them have focused on how the myths for the three Denno Emperors were formed, how those myths were changed or altered in later periods, and how past historical figures were depicted and described(人物像), while also quite a few of them focused on each of the aforementioned chapters. Following a review of those studies, several other studies that have analyzed certain references to Korean-Japanese exchanges and relations, which can be found from all the three chapters, are examined in part 2’s second half. Noteworthy ones among such studies include ‘immigrant(渡來人) studies’ based on archaeological findings that have been newly secured since the 1990s, as well as the reexamination on the 5th century international relationships which demands new interpretations of existing texts.
Recently in terms of Nihonshoki studies, the Japanese academic circle seems to be more interested in the text itself or the time when compilation of the text actually occurred, than it is in recreating past history based on this very text. Such pattern probably is due to Nihonshoki being generally viewed as a product of significant embellishment of historical facts based on the 8th century Japanese people’s idea of(or aspiring for) a Legal State. In the future, we should monitor certain new attempts that may appear in Japanese studies, like approaching Nihonshoki from a different angle based on archaeological findings or new critical reexamination of the text.
