심방 관련 조상신본풀이의 형성과 전승 (The formation of Josangsinbonpuri and its transmission : a study of six Josangsinbonpuris with reference to Simbang)

초록

이 글의 목적은 심방과 관련한 조상신본풀이의 형성과 전승에 대해 살펴보는 것이다. 이 글의 주요 논점은 크게 3가지로 정리할 수 있다. 첫째, 조상신본풀이에 나타난 심방에 대한 인식이다. 둘째, 심방이 조상신으로서 좌정하는 양상과 무업의 전승이다. 셋째, 심방과 관련한 조상신본풀이의 형성과 전승이다.
이를 위해 심방의 특성과 조상신본풀이의 특성이라는 기준을 세워 심방과 관련한 조상신본풀이를 가려내었다. 심방의 특성은 심방이 되는 계기, 심방으로서 정체성, 심방으로서 자질과 능력 등 3가지 측면이다. 조상신본풀이의 특성으로 삼은 것은 신앙대상인 조상신, 신앙주체인 단골, 신앙과정과 전승의 측면이다. 이를 바탕으로 6편의 조상신본풀이를 선정하였다. 고대장본풀이, 예촌 양씨아미본풀이, 원당할망본풀이, 안카름 현씨일월당본풀이, 눈미 양씨아미본풀이, 우렝이 김씨조상본풀이다. 이렇게 선별된 본풀이의 내용을 간단히 요약하고 살펴 각각의 본풀이가 가지는 특성을 정리하였다.
이 글에서는 조상신본풀이를 주로 남성형과 여성형으로 구분해서 다루었다. 남성형과 여성형은 심방의 특성과 조상신본풀이의 특성을 어떻게 인식하느냐에 따라 차이점을 드러냈다. 남성형에서는 심방의 특성을 ‘능력’이라는 측면에서 바라보았다. 해당 조상의 생업이 심방이었을 뿐 심방이라는 것 자체가 중요하게 다루어지지 않고, 오히려 그의 능력을 더 중요하게 인식하였다. 걸출한 조상의 능력을 조상신본풀이를 통하여 대대로 기억하고 전승시키면 되는 것이지, 그 외에 조상으로 인하여 집안에 어떤 특별한 문제를 해결해야 한다든가 또는 다른 장치가 필요하지 않다고 여긴 것이다. 결핍이 없는 완벽한 조상은 후손에게 현시하여 특별한 요구를 하지 않았다. 이런 점 때문에 조상신본풀이의 특성에서 거의 내용을 남기지 않았다. 조상신 신앙의 범위도 확대되지 않았다. 남성형은 조상신으로 모시는 해당 집안에서 ‘현재를 유지하려는 인식’의 결과였다.
반면에 여성형에서는 심방의 특성을 ‘문제’라는 측면에서 바라보았다. 해당 조상의 생업이 심방이거나 또는 심방이 될 자질을 보였던 것이 집안의 큰 문제로 대두되었다. 심방 자질은 능력으로 상승되기도 전에 끝내 이루지 못하거나 부정해야 할 대상으로 전락하였다. 해당 조상의 능력보다는 그의 심방 팔자를 더 중요하게 인식하였다. 그러니 문제의 당사자는 원혼이 되었고, 자신을 기억하고 받드는 존재를 만들기 위해 현실의 세상에 개입하게 되는 것이다. 결핍이 있는 조상은 후손과의 적극적인 관계 맺기를 통하여 정상으로 환원하고자 하였다. 이런 점 때문에 조상신본풀이의 특성에서 관련 내용을 남겨 둔 것이다. 예기치 않은 조상의 요구에 후손은 적극적으로 응답하였다. 이러한 응답에 조상이 큰 복을 내리는 것으로 여겨지자 후손들은 이것이 현실의 삶을 좌지우지하는 데까지 나아간다고 받아들였다. 이런 점은 조상신 신앙이 널리 확대되는 계기가 되었다. 여성형은 조상신으로 모시는 해당 집안과 단골에서 ‘현재를 전환하려는 인식’의 결과였다.

영어초록

This paper aims to examine the formation of Josangsinbonpuri(조상신본풀이) and its transmission with reference to Simbang(심방). The main points of argument can be summarized in threefold: 1) the understanding of Simbang expressed on Josangsinbonpuri; 2) the aspects of Josangsin(조상신)'s taking over the village and the transmission of the shamanic work; and 3) the background of forming the Josangsinbonpuri and rationale of its transmission.
For this research, characteristics of Simbang as well as Josangsinbonpuri were set up as a standard and six Josangsinbonpuris in connection with Simbang were selected. While the characteristics of Simbang considered three important aspects―ways of becoming Simbang, the identity as a Simbang, and the qualification and ability as a Simbang―, the characteristics of Josangsinbonpuri concerned Josangsin as a religious object, Dangol(단골) as a religious subject and the aspects of believing process and its transmission. Based on this, six Josangsinbonpuris― Godaejangbonpuri(고대장본풀이), Yechon Yangssiamibonpuri(예촌 양씨아미본풀이), Weondanghalmangbonpuri(원당할망본풀이), Ankarum Hyeonssiilweoldangbonpuri(안카름 현씨일월당본풀이), Nunmi Yangssiamibonpuri(눈미 양씨아미본풀이) and Woorengi Kimssijosangbonpuri(우렝이 김씨조상본풀이)― were selected and summarized in both their contents and characteristics.
In this paper, Josangsinbonpuri was viewed as both male-type and female-type in which the difference between two types depends on how characteristics of Simbang and Josangsinbonpuri were perceived. As for male-type, the characteristic of Simbang was viewed from ‘the ability’. Put it differently, what is perceived as significant in Josangsinbonpuri categorized in male type is not the fact that he or she is a Simbang but his or her ability of which its ancestor was also a Simbang. It was through Josangsinbonpuri that excellent ancestral ability was constructed and transmitted, it was not necessarily to have other instruments for resolving certain problems of family caused by ancestors. Perfect ancestor never be in special need through revelation so that nothing was found in the characteristics of Josangsinbonpuri nor the scope of believing Josangsin was expended. Therefore, male-type (Josangsinbonpuri) is interpreted as an outcome of ‘intending to maintain the present’ by the family that worships ancestral god.
On the other hand, characteristics of Simbang can be seen from the aspect of ‘the trouble’ in female-type (Josangsinbonpuri). Not only the fact that the ancestor was a Simbang but also a person's potential to be a Simbang become a big trouble within a family. Therefore, the qualification for the Simbang was degraded to an object of rejection by families before it is accomplished. The destiny of the Simbang was more valued than the ability of Simbang's ancestor and thus, the person concerned became a spirit who is interfere in this world in order to make himself (or herself) worshipped. The contents derived from that imperfect ancestor intends to be perfect through establishing relations with descendants remain in the nature of Josangsinbonpuri. The descendent actively respond to unexpected ancestors' request. Besides, having thought that those responses were compensated by ancestors, the descendent believe that the ancestor would control the life in this world. This view contributed to the diffusion of believing Josangsin. Female-type (Josangsinbonpuri) is interpreted as an outcome of ‘intending to change the present’.
