폐허의 고도와 창조된 신도(神都) (Ruined Ancient City and Created Shindo City)

초록

부여는 백제 멸망 이후 오랜 세월 동안 망각된 고도(古都)였다. 1920년대까지 산견되는 백제와 부여의 이미지는 쇠망한 고대왕국의 그것이고, 몰락한 역사의 한 장면에 대한 회한의 정조가 자동화되어 나타나고 있다. 부여라는 도시에 대한 근대적 이미지가 생산되기 시작한 것은 1929년을 전후한 상황이었다. 그 중요한 계기로는 1915년 발족된 부여고족보존회가 1929년 재단법인으로 변경된 것을 들 수 있다. 이후로 신문기사나 기행문에서 엿보이는 부여에 대한 소개는 경주나 평양에 필적하는 도시로 부여를 재발견하고자 하는 의도를 전하고 있다. 부여는 이제 경주나 평양에 맞서는 유서깊은 고도로 다시금 조명받고 있다. 부여는 내선일체라는 당대의 국책에 부응하는 장소로 소환되었다. 일본과 조선의 역사에 무언가 의미 있는 관계가 있었다면, 그것은 부여라는 장소를 제외하고는 상상하기 어렵다는 인식을 통해 부여의 표상을 새롭게 주조해내고 있는 것이다.
1939년 3월 총독부가 부여신궁 건립계획을 발표하였다. 신도(神都)로 새롭게 탄생한 부여는 더 이상 잊혀진 소읍이 아니라, 과거의 찬란한 문화유산을 지니고 있는 도시로 재조명된다. 부여를 내선일체를 강화하는 정신적 전당으로 삼고자하는 기획으로 마련된 신도건설은 식민지 지식인들에게 국책을 수행하기 위한 사명을 부여하였다. 부여를 내선일체의 영지이자 고대로부터 이어져온 내선의 ‘피’의 친연성을 증명하는 장소로서의 신도로 건설하고자 했던 1940년대 초반의 움직임에 부응하는 작품으로 김동인의 장편역사소설 『백마강』을 들 수 있다. 친일문학의 대표격으로 여겨져야 할 『백마강』과 비교해서 현진건의 미완의 장편 『흑치상지』를 살필 필요가 있다. 민족의 비애를 불러일으키는 몰락한 고대왕국의 이미지와 일본과의 혈통적 친연성의 증거가 되는 고대국가의 이름 사이에서 백제라는 표상은 부유하고 있다.

영어초록

Buyeo was an ancient city that had been forgotten for a long time since a fall of Baekje. The image in Baekje and Buyeo, which are seen here and there until the 1920s, is the one in the declined ancient kingdom and is being automated to be indicated sentiment of remorse on one scene in the fallen history. What the modern image on a city called Buyeo started to be produced was a situation before and after 1929. Its important chance can be taken what Buyeo Ancient-family Preservation Association, which was established in 1915, was changed into a foundation in 1929. The introduction on Buyeo, which is observed in newspaper articles or travel sketches since then, is delivering intention of re-discovering Buyeo as a city equivalent to Gyeongju or Pyeongyang. Buyeo is being illuminated again as a historically ancient city of standing now against Gyeongju or Pyeongyang. As a place that makes Joseon and Japan have the extremely deep relationship beyond even the contemporary policy called ‘Naeseonyunghwa內鮮融和-Japan and Joseon need to be reconciled).’ it is what again makes identity of Buyeo. It is what newly casts a symbol of Buyeo through recognizing that it is difficult to be imagined except a place called Buyeo if there had been relationship something significant in history of both countries.
As the government-general announces a plan for establishing Buyeo Shindo Shrine(扶餘神宮) in March of 1939, a situation comes to be varied completely. Buyeo, which was newly born as Shindo City(神都), is re-illuminated as a city that has brilliantly cultural heritage in the past, not a small town anymore where was forgotten. This urban plan, which newly makes Buyeo for intellects in the colonial times, implied the moment of being revived ancient-city Buyeo, which is recalled just wealth and prosperity in distant old days with being decayed for over 1000 years. At the same time, it also signified that the qualification of ‘Shindo City(神都),’ which there is just one even in the mainland Japan, is given to a regional city of Joseon. 『Baekmagang River』, which is Kim Dong-in's long historical novel, can be raised as a piece of work that corresponds to movement in the early 1940s when having aimed to build Buyeo as Shindo City(神都) as a place that proves a holy ground in Naeseonilche(內鮮一體) and affinity in ‘blood’ for Naeseon(內鮮), which had been followed from ancient times. In comparison with 『Baekmagang River』 that will need to be regarded as a representative case of pro-Japanese literature, 『Heukchisangji(黑齒常之)』, which is Hyeon Jin-geon's unfinished long work, needs to be examined. A symbol called Baekje is drifting between image of the ruined ancient kingdom, which causes racial sorrow, and a name of ancient nation, which becomes a proof of genuine affinity with Japan.
