신라의 신발견 문자자료와 연구동향 (Newly Excavated Epigraphic Materials on the Silla Kingdom and the Tendency of Study of Them)

초록

최근 20년간 신라의 새로운 문자자료가 많이 발견되었다. 이들 문자자료는 종류가 다양하고 그 수도 결코 적지 않았다. 여기서는 자료의 상태와 재질을 바탕으로 석문, 목간, 기와명문, 금문, 묵서, 토기명문 등으로 나누어 연구동향을 살펴보았다.
문자자료 가운데 가장 큰 비중을 차지한 것은 석문이었다. 특히 울진봉평신라비비(524), 영일냉수리신라비(503), 포항중성리신라비(501?) 등은 발견 당시 각각 신라최고의 비석으로 알려져 중시되었다. 이들은 글자 수가 많고 중요한 내용이 많아 신라사의 이해에 엄청난 변화를 초래하였다. 신라 왕권에 대한 새로운 이해가 가능해졌기 때문이다.
석문의 일부, 목간, 기와명문, 금문, 묵서, 토기명문 등의 문자자료는 글자 수가적은 단편적인 자료들이었다. 따라서 체계적이며 일관된 정보를 파악하기는 어려웠다. 그러나 이 같은 편린들이 신라사의 주요 문제 해결에 시사적인 경우는 적지 않았다. 이처럼 문자자료는 문헌자료만으로는 알 수 없는 새로운 사실들을 많이 파악할 수 있게 하였다는 점에서 의미가 매우 크다. 이 같은 점에 비추어 볼 때 새로운 문자자료의 출현에 대한 관심은 지속적으로 경주되어야 한다.
한편, 문자자료는 새로 발견하는 것만 중요한 것은 아니다. 이미 공개되었으면서도 아직 연구되지 않은 문자자료 역시 신자료라 할 수 있기 때문이다. 또한 기존에 알려진 자료라도 새로운 정리나 판독으로 신자료로서의 가치를 확인할 수도 있다. 문자자료 연구에서 글자 한 자 한 자의 중요성을 상기한다면, 이미 알려진 것이라 하더라도 지속적인 관심을 가지고 재음미하려는 노력이 필수적이다.

영어초록

For the past twenty years, a variety of epigraphic materials have been newly discovered in no small quantities. This study pursues to classify them into inscriptions on stone monuments, wooden documents, inscriptions on roofing tiles, inscriptions on metal wares, characters written in India ink, and inscriptions on earthenware, based on their appearances and materials, and make clear recent tendency of study of them.
The main observations can be summed up as follows.
Among epigraphic materials, inscriptions on stone steles are most important. In particular, the Silla monuments found at Bongpyeong-ri, Ulchin county, at Naengsuri,Yeongil county, and Jungseong-ri, Pohang, were each considered the oldest Silla steles and were counted for much. These were erected in 524, 503, and 501 (?), respectively.
All of them contain many characters and are rich in important contents so as to bring profound changes to understanding of Silla history. Above all, they make possible new understanding on kingly authority of the ancient Korean kingdom. On the contrary, some inscriptions on stone monuments, wooden documents, inscriptions on roofing tiles, inscriptions on metal goods, characters written in India ink, and inscriptions on earthenware consist of just a few characters and therefore are regarded as fragmented and insufficient historical materials. They do not provide systematic and consistent information. But these fragmented materials are also suggestive to solution of major problems in Silla history. In short, these epigraphic materials are very useful, in a way that they make possible understanding of many new historical facts which documentary materials can not provide. Viewed in this light, we should continuously show interest in the excavation of new epigraphic materials. What matters is not confined to discovery of new materials, since those which were already excavated but not yet examined are also considered new materials and need new decipherment and interpretation. Taken into consideration importance of each character in the study of epigraphic materials, continuous interest in and close examination of the already found materials are also essential.
