신자료 <주유옥전>의 소설 창작 양상 연구 (The Newly Discovered Text, "Ju Yuok jeon" and Its Mode of Creation)

초록

본고는 신자료 <주유옥전>을 소개하면서 이 계열 소설에 대한 기존 연구를 토대로 <주유옥전>과 관련이 있는 소설을 통해 그 상관성을 살펴보고, 이 소설이 어떠한 과정을 거쳐 창작되었는지 그 창작 양상에 대해 연구하였다.
우선 기존의 연구를 토대로 살펴보면, ‘첫날밤에 계모에 의해 목이 잘린 신랑’ 이야기 계열 소설들은 설화에서 필사본 <조생원전> 그리고 <김씨열행록>, 신소설 <구의산>으로 이행이 아닌 이 계열 소설의 기본 서사구조 즉, ‘첫날밤에 계모에 의해 목이 잘린 신랑’ 이야기에 후반부 서사가 어떻게 붙느냐에 따라 다양한 소설로 만들어지고 있음을 확인하였다. 예컨대, 필사본 <조생원전>의 경우는 기본 서사구조에 ‘손자의 과거 급제 이야기’가 덧붙여졌고, <김씨열행록>의 경우는 기본 서사구조에 ‘옥매 이야기’가 첨가되었다. 이러한 양상은 고소설에서 종종 드러나는 것으로, 기존의 이야기에 새로운 이야기가 덧붙여져 기존의 소설과는 전혀 다른 소설을 만드는 것이다.
본고에서 다룬 <주유옥전>의 경우 또한 <김씨열행록>과 같이 ‘첫날밤에 계모에 의해 목이 잘린 신랑’ 이야기에 후반부에 다양한 이야기가 결합되어 완전히 새로운 소설로 창작된 것임을 확인할 수 있었다. 특히, 이 소설은 주유옥이라는 인물을 통해 제주는 물론 청국까지 그 배경을 확대해가며 계모 이야기에서 군담까지 다양한 이야기를 전개하고 있다. 다만 작가는 기존의 고소설을 탐독했던 사람으로 <주유옥전> 창작에 있어 이러한 소설들의 영향을 많이 받았던 것으로 보인다. 비록 다른 필사본이나 활자본이 남아 있지는 않아 이 작품이 얼마나 유통되었는지 알 수 없지만 경판 ○권본 <삼국지> 권지삼 또는 완판 <언삼국지> 하편과 같이 기존의 이야기에 새로운 이야기 혹은 기존의 이야기에서 어떤 모티프를 가지고 와 서사를 확장시켜 기존의 소설과는 전혀 다른 소설을 만든 것이다. 이는 상업적 목적의 소설에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 ‘혼성모방’ 혹은 ‘짜깁기’ 형식의 소설 창작 양상으로 19세기 소설의 한 특징이라 할 수 있을 것이다. 특히, <주유옥전>의 경우는 비슷한 모티프들로 결합된 <삼국지연의>의 개작 양상과는 달리 전혀 다른 소설들이 모여 한 편의 새로운 소설을 만들었다는 점에서 매우 독특하다. 때문에 19세기 소설 창작 양상 연구에 중요한 자료가 될 것이다.

영어초록

This paper aims to introduce and examine the newly discovered text, "Ju Yuok jeon(The Story of Ju Yuok)" and its corelation with the other fictions by comparing it against the existing studies of the fictions which can be categorized as the similar type, and contemplate its mode of creation by tracing the process in which it was created.
Based on the existing studies, it could be verified that this particular type of fiction, the story of "the groom being decapitated by the stepmother" did not go through the step-by-step transition from the oral tale to the manuscript version of "Jo Saengwon jeon (The Story of Jo Saengwon)" and "Gim ssi Yeolhaeng rok(The Story of Lady Gim's Chastity)" to Sinsoseol (literally, new fiction) "Guuisan," but diversified by adding a different story in the latter part while retaining the basic narrative structure of "the groom being decapitated by the stepmother." For instance, in the latter part of "Jo Saengwon jeon," the story of the character searching for his grandfather was added, and in case of "Gim ssi Yeolhaeng rok" the story of Okmae was added. This mode of creation, that could be summarized as adding a new story to an exsiting story and, thereby creating an entirely different story, was often employed in Gososeol (old fiction).
"Ju Yuok jeon" which is the research object of this paper was also created in such manner. This story deploys diverse level of narratives from the story of a hero on the battlefield as well as the basic narrative of the decapitation of the groom by the stepmother, through the character Ju Yuok whose track stretches not only to Jeju, but also to Qing China. It seems that the unknown author's indulgence in old fiction resulted in such narrative structure. Since no other manuscript of printed version of this story was discovered yet, it is difficult to tell how widely read this story was. However, the mode of creation for this story is one that could be confirmed by the existence of "Samguk-ji(Romance of the Three Kingdoms)" Book 3, or "Eon Samguk-ji(Romance of the Three Kingdoms in Vernacular Korean)" Part 2, which took motifs from existing stories, expanded the narrative and created something entirely different from the original. This confirms the "pastiche" or "patchwork" mode of creation that was often employed in the nineteenth century commercial fiction. The product of such mode of creation should not be treated as a different version of the original, but treated as an entirely different story from the original.
