초록

이 논문은 『삼국유사』의 고승 중 성사에 대한 인각 일연(麟角一然, 1206~ 1289)의 이해를 탐구한 글이다. 일연은 고승으로서 성사의 삶을 보여준 이들을 발견하고 그들을 문화 영웅으로서 기리기 위해헌신하였다. 그는 이상적인 삶의 모델을 보여준 성사들이 당대의문화 영웅이었으며 그들은 사회적 리더로서 남다른 모습을 보여주었다고 파악하였다. 그리하여 일연은 그들의 행장을 발굴하고 그들의 전기를 기술함으로써 『삼국유사』의 분량을 확장시켰으며, 『삼국사기』가 담아내지 못한 주체적 인간의 삶, 능동적 인간의 삶을 후세에 남겨주기 위해 노력하였다.
일연이 기술한 『삼국유사』에는 고승으로서 성사의 삶을 살았던 많은 이들이 실려 있다. 그 중에서도 지통(智通), 관기(觀機), 도성(道 成), 반사(搬師), 첩사( 師), 보덕(普德), 원효(元曉), 신림(神琳), 표훈(表訓), 연회(緣會), 정수(正秀) 등은 새로운 삶의 방식을 제시한 그시대의 문화 영웅들이었으며 동시에 새로운 여론을 만들어내는 사회적 리더였다. 일연은 이러한 점에 주목하여 『삼국유사』 속의 붓다와 보살들의 현신으로서 고승과 성사의 삶에 주목하였다. 그 결과 그는 문화 영웅이자 사회적 리더로서 고승과 성사의 은사 일사로서의 삶, 풍류 도인으로서의 삶, 국사 왕사로서의 삶을 조명해 냄으로써 『삼국사기』가 담아내지 못한 인간 이해의 깊이와 세계 인식의 넓이를 담아낼 수 있었다.
엄밀하지는 않지만 일연에게는 고승과 성사 및 대사/대덕/장로, 법사/화상, 선사/율사, 사문/사/승의 구분 의식이 있었던 것으로 이해된다. 『삼국유사』에는 이러한 구분이 적지 않게 사용되고 있으며여기에는 문화 영웅이자 사회적 리더로서 승려상을 수립하고자 하는 일연의 역사관이 투영되어 되어 있다. 그는 신이사관(神異史觀)에입각하여 『삼국사기』에 ‘빠진 일들을 기록하겠다’는 소극적인 의미만이 아니라 오히려 우리 역사가 ‘남긴 일들을 기록하겠다’는 적극적인 의지를 담아 『삼국유사』를 찬술하였다. 그리하여 일연은 학덕이 높은 고승으로서 성사의 정의와 의미를 담아내면서 자신이 생각하는 불교와 불교인상을 제시하고자 하였다.
일연은 김부식(金富軾)이 유교사관에 입각해 삼국 당시 가장 두드러진 활동을 한 고승들을 『삼국사기』의 전기에서 완전히 배제한 점, 역사의 전환점을 가져온 불교 관련의 주요 내용을 대부분 빠뜨리고있는 점, 고구려, 백제, 신라 중심의 역사만을 기록했을 뿐 정작 우리 민족의 시원인 고조선과 부여 및 가야, 삼한, 옥저, 동예, 대발해등의 역사를 기록하지 않았다는 점, 불교문화의 주역이었던 불교문화 영웅들을 인물 전기에 전혀 편입시키지 않은 점 등을 비판하면서 ‘대안사서’로서 『삼국유사』를 찬술하였다. 그리고 그는 그 안에다 집단 지성이자 문화 영웅인 성사의 살림살이와 사고방식을 적극적으로 기록할 수 있었다

This paper examines monk Ingak Ilyeon’s (麟角一然, 1206–1289) understanding of enlightened monks among eminent monks in his book Overlooked Historical Record of the Three Korean Kingdoms. Ilyeon devoted his life to discovering enlightened monks among the eminent monks throughout history and honoring them as cultural heroes. He realized that those enlightened masters were the most influential people in their communities and were cultural heroes because they were models of an ideal human being during that era. In an effort to pass down the spirit of independence and enthusiasm those heroes showed, he collected records of them and included their biographies in Overlooked Historical Record of the Three Korean Kingdoms because Busik Kim’s History of the Three Korean Kingdoms had missed them.In Overlooked Historical Record of the Three Korean Kingdoms, there are many enlightened masters who were eminent in their era. Among them, Jitong, Kwangi, Dosung, Bansa, Chupsa, Boduk, Wonhyo, Sillim, Pyohoon, Yeonhoi, and Jungsu were cultural heroes of their eras who showed a new way of life and were the most influential people in their communities who affected public opinion. Ilyeon noticed this and directed his attention to these heroes’ lives, which he considered a manifestation of Buddha and Bodhisattvas. As a result, he put the life stories of the hermit Ilsa, of the elegance master, of national teacher and royal teacher of enlightened masters in his history record since History of the Three Korean Kingdoms did not include them.
Although Ilyeon did not perform a thorough examination, he seems to have understood the main differences between enlightened great master/monk/an elder, master/eminent monk, dharma teacher/monk, meditation master/precept master, and sramana/bhikkhu/monk. In Overlooked Historical Record of the Three Korean Kingdoms, these terms were often used with careful consideration; this represents Ilyeon’s historic point of view in which he establishes enlightened masters as cultural heroes and the most influential people in society. He wrote Overlooked Historical Record of the Three Korean Kingdoms not only to include the historical events History of the Three Korean Kingdoms overlooked, but also to actively record the important values passed down throughout history based on his mystic and magical historical point of view. In his view, the enlightened masters throughout history were the most influential people in their communities, and at the same time, models of an ideal Buddhist.Ilyeon criticized Busik Kim’s History of the Three Korean Kingdoms on many points: Kim did not write anything about enlightened monks who played important roles in the country, he missed all the important Buddhist events that brought critical changes to the history of the nation, he wrote only about three Korean kingdoms — Koguryo, Baekje, Silla — without writing anything about Kojosun, Buyeo, Gaya, Samhan, Okjeo, Dongye, or Great Balhae that were the origins of our race, and he did not write any biographies of great Buddhist figures who were the most influential people in Buddhist countries.
For these reasons, Ilyeon wrote Overlooked Historical Record of the Three Korean Kingdoms as an alternative history in which he could actively include the value of the lives of enlightened monks who were cultural heroes and the most influential figures in society.
