『1872년 郡縣地圖』 중 全羅道地圖의 회화식 표현 분석 (An Analysis of Painting Styles Used in the Maps of Jeolla Province from Joseon County-Prefectual Maps of 1872)

초록

본 논문에서는 『1872년 군현지도』 중 전라도 지도의 산형 표현 방식을 중심으로 회화적 특징을 살펴보았으며 제작 방식과 실질적으로 제작에 참여된 인원을 구체적으로 파악하였다.
조선왕조에서 시행한 전국 군현지도 편찬사업의 마지막 성과물로 평가되는 『1872년 군현지도』 는 이전의 관찬 군현지도집과 달리 통일성은 결여되었지만 19세기 말 변화된 정치, 경제적 상황과군사적 내용을 담고 있다는 점에서 당시 지방사회의 모습을 여과없이 보여주는 사료로서 의미를 지닌다. 또한 기존의 회화식 군현지도 제작 기법이 총체적으로 사용되어 각 군현의 지도 제작 양상을살펴볼 수 있다는 점에서도 가치를 지닌다.
『1872년 군현지도』의 제작은 당시 정권을 잡은 흥선대원군이 중앙집권적 통치 체제를 확립하고 정치적 기반을 마련하기 위해서 각 지방의 정보를 수집한 것과 관련이 있다. 전 국토의 실정과 군사력에 대한 현황 파악은 이미 1871년부터 이루어지고 있었으며 1872년에는 관방(關防) 지역을 포함한 전국 군현을 대상으로 대형의 지도를 기획하였다. 『1872년 군현지도』는 전체적으로 1871년 읍지도를 바탕으로 확대 제작된 것으로 보이며, 1872년 3월에서 6월에 걸쳐 전국의 군현에서 자체적으로 완성되었다.
그러나 『1872년 군현지도』 중 전라도 지도는 1871년 읍지도를 임모(臨摹) 하지 않고 새롭게 제작하였다. 도곽(圖廓) 안에 지도를 그리고 지도 여백에 건치연혁(建置沿革)을 기록하는 방식으로체제를 통일하였으며 청록산수화풍의 화려한 색채와 경물의 구체적인 묘사 방식은 다른 지방의 지도와 구별된다. 전라도 지도는 기본적으로 산도 형식의 구도를 바탕으로 지형의 지세를 설명하는풍수지리관이 강하게 표출되었으며 실재하는 비경을 구체적으로 묘사한 산수화적 표현은 실경산수화와 같은 맥락으로 제작되었다.
제주도 지도를 제외한 총 80점의 전라도 지도는 산형 표현에서 동일한 화풍이 반복되거나 실경적 요소가 강조되는 두 가지 유형으로 분류된다. 그런데 동일한 화풍으로 제작된 지도는 같은 방식으로 묘사되었더라도 안료나 채색 기법은 다르게 구사되어 밑그림과 채색 작업이 분업으로 진행되었음을 알 수 있다. 또한 실경적 요소가 강조된 표현은 화가의 회화적 수준에 따라 묘사 방식에서조금씩 차이가 나타났다.
따라서 전라도 지도에 보이는 화풍의 유형을 기준으로 지도 제작에 참여한 화가의 인원을 추정하였으며 전라도 지도의 필사작업에는 전라감영의 지휘 아래 화사군관을 비롯하여 지역 화가 총30여명이 동원되었다. 전라도 지도가 다른 지역의 지도와 달리 감영에서 다시 필사하는 과정을 거치면서 일정한 양식을 갖춘 채색지도로 탄생할 수 있었던 배경에는 당시 전라도 지역의 지도편찬을주관했던 관찰사의 기획력과 원로화원의 숙련된 기량이 함께 발휘되었기 때문에 가능하였다.

영어초록

This paper studies the pictorial characteristics of 80 maps of Jeolla Province (excluding the maps of Jeju Island) from the Joseon County-Prefectual Maps of 1872 and focuses on the maps’ depiction of mountains. Additionally, this paper examines the process of making maps as well as the personnels who participated in the actual drawing.
Deemed as the final outcome of the Joseon dynasty's initiative to produce state maps, Joseon County-Prefectual Maps of 1872 are important historical documents as they reveal local communities without any filters, though they lack consistency compared with previous maps published by local administrations. The maps in 1872 display different political, economic, and military conditions of the late 19th century. In addition, they are excellent sources to examine mapping procedures used for each region of the country since they collectively utilized all existing pictorial map-drawing techniques.
The initiative of the Joseon County-Prefectual Maps of 1872 is related to the efforts of the regent Heungseon Daewongun to gather information on each region in an attempt to gain political ground and establish centralized authority. The 1872 maps were drawn from March to June 1872 for each gun (county) and hyeon (prefacture) nationwide, expanding the eupji (town gazetters) complied in 1871 as the bases.
Among the 1872 maps, the maps of Jeolla Province, however, were newly drawn from scratch, not by copying the maps in eupji of 1871. All the maps of Jeolla Province adopted the same format, where a map was drawn in a bordered canvas and the important years of the regional history was written down in the margins. Moreover, they are distinguished from other local maps in the way they applied various colors often found in blue-and-green landscape paintings, and the way they portrayed the scenery in detail. In general, the Jeolla Province maps clearly display a theory of geomancy, showing geographical features with a style of sando (graveyard maps), and depict picturesque scenes in a similar style of true-view landscape paintings.
When it comes to portraying mountains, the Jeolla Province maps can be divided in two groups: one that displays the patternized style and the other that focuses on topography.
Nevertheless, the former suggests that they were sketched and colored by different artists as the pigments and color techniques on each map vary; the latter displays different in pictorial styles that varied according to an individual artist’s level of skill.
Based on the painting styles of the maps of Jeolla Province, it can be assumed that thirty people, government officials specialized in painting as well as local painters, participated in drawing under the command of the Jeolla Provincial office. The Jeolla Province maps were produced with a consistent form and various colors thanks to the skilled veteran artists and the Jeolla Provincial governor in charge of publishing the maps.
