일제 말기 소설 유형의 탈식민성 연구 (A post-colonalism study of late Japanese colonial novel's type)

초록

일제 말기 전대의 문학적 지향이 사라진 시기, 작가들은 각기 다른 방식으로 새로운 문학적 지향을 모색한다. 이는 특히 한국 근대 문학을 형성한 세 가지 경로, 즉 조선 고전 서사의 전통, 일본 자연주의 문학, 서구의 노벨 양식에 대한 정치한 재인식으로 나타난다. 그 결과 당대 일련의 동양 담론의 확산 속에서 조선의 고전 서사 양식인 역사서술을 차용하여 리얼리티와 픽션의 이중적 구성을 내포하는 역사소설 유형이 대두하며, 일본 자연주의 문학의 사소설에 대한 재인식을 통해 ‘자아’를 둘러싼 현실과 길항하는 우회적 글쓰기 전략으로서의 ‘사소설’ 유형이 대두한다. 그리고 서구 노벨 양식 중 조선의 특수한 근대성을 해명하기 위한 소설 유형으로 가족사 연대기 소설 유형이 대두한다.
이러한 소설 유형은 전대에도 존재했으나, 이 시기 유독 강력한 문학적 흐름을 형성한다. 이들 소설 유형은 그 원천을 단순히 모방, 반복한 것이 아니라 각기 다른 문제설정 속에서 일제 말기 작가 의식을 표출하는 양식으로 기능했다는 점에서 문학사적 의의를 지닌다. 역사소설은 당대 민족주의와 체제협력 사이에서 균열된 정체성을 표출하며, 조선적 ‘사소설’은 신체제에 대응하기 위한 문학적 전략으로 사용된다. 그리고 가족사 연대기 소설은 당시 ‘근대의 초극’ 담론에 포획되지 않는 조선적 특수성을 해명하기 위한 작가들의 문제설정을 보여준다. 이와 같이 일제 말기 새롭게 대두하는 소설 유형들은 각기 그 원천에 대한 다양한 탈식민적 전략을 통해 당대 작가의식을 모색하기 위한 글쓰기 양식으로 기능했다. 그리고 이는 소설의 내용과 형식의 이분법적 구도로 포착되지 않는 일제 말기 작가의식을 규명할 수 있는 중요한 징후로 재평가될 수 있을 것이다.

영어초록

In the end of Japan's colonial period, when the literary investigation of the past disappeared, writers pursued new literary searches in different kinds of ways. They wanted to create the novels in a new pattern. For this, they need to have a new understanding of the three constituents: Joseon's traditional narrative, Japan's Naturalism literature, and European novel patterns, which are said to stimulate the formation of Korean modern novel. In the conclusion of writers' investigation, a historical novel pattern, an autobiographical novel pattern, and a family's chronicle novel pattern appeared. Firstly, the historical novel pattern implied a dual constitution of both the reality and the fiction. It borrowed Joseon's traditional historical narrative in the spread of a series of 'Orient' discourses. Secondly, the autobiographical novel pattern was a kind of roundabout writing strategy which connote the ego's competition with the real world. It resulted from the reperception of Japan's autobiographical novels, which was under the influence of Naturalism. Thirdly, the family's chronicle novel pattern was to elucidate Joseon's particular modernity borrowing the western novel pattern.
Of course, these three novel patterns existed in the former period. But it is important that these became, in this period, the main and powerful stream of the literature on a sudden. We need to emphasize the importance of these novel patterns in the literature history, because they are the consequences of each writer's competitons with the real world. Writers neither imitated nor repeated these three novel patterns. They tried to change the patterns in their own ways to show their critical mind. In brief, the historical novel showed the broken identity between the Nationalism and the Japanophilism, the autobiographical novel was used as an literary strategy competing the fascism in those days, and the family's chronicle novel showed writer's struggles to explain Joseon's extraordinary modernity in the different ways from the 'overcome of the modern' discourse.
New novel patterns like these, which were decolonial changes of the fountainheads, re-appearing in the end of Japan's colonial period functioned as a writing strategy in which writers showed their own critical mind. We can revaluate these new novel patterns as important symptoms to elucidate the writers' critical minds in the end of Japan's colonial period. It is because the critical minds of writers in those days are not captured in dichotomous eyes of form and matter.
