이동하는 모더니티와 난민의 감각 - 김승옥 소설에 나타난 지방 출신 대학생의 도시 입사식(入社式)을 중심으로 (The moving modernity and the sense of refugees: Focusing on an urban entry of a university student from home-grown in Kim Seung-ok’s novel)

초록

4․19는 한국 정치사에서 개개인은 복종의 의무가 아닌 권리를 가졌으며, 권력의 정당성은 국민의 동의로부터 나온다는 정치적 자유의식을 보여준 시민 혁명이다. 4․19가 의거가 아니라 ‘혁명’인 것은 참된 권력을 향한 지향 속에 불의와 억압에 대한 저항을 마다하지 않는 근대적 개인이 탄생되었기 때문이다. 그러나 사일구의 정치적 자유를 향한 의지는 혁명정신의 계승을 내세워 집권한 군사 정부에 의해 억눌리는 한편으로 경제발전을 통해 체제적 승리를 도모하자는 정부의 개발 계획과 함께 사회가 급격히 세속화함으로써 속물화의 유혹 속에 노출된다. 이러한 사회적 이행기를 배경으로 김승옥은 “끊임없는 자기 갱신과 변형, 이동성과 불확실성, 성장과 발전에 대한 욕구 등으로 특징지어지는 역동적인 모더니티 사회”, 즉 근대-개발의 도시에 입성한 상경 대학생의 내면적, 정신적 성숙을 문학적 주제로 만들었다. 더 나은 교육 기회를 찾아 이동해온 유학생의 서울 경험은 국토 공간의 재편성 속에서 출현한 수평적 사회 이동이 기실 계급적 성격을 띠는 수직운동이었음을 드러낸다.
별다른 준비없이 산포된 채 서울에 입성한 지방출신들에게 낯선 땅에 끼어들어 어떻게든 살아남아야 한다는 것, 즉 생존은 정언명령이었다. 상경 대학생들은 의식주가 열악할 뿐더러 도시에서 이렇다 할 삶의 기반을 마련하지 못한 데 따른 불안에 시달린다는 점에서 도시 난민의 성격을 보여준다. 상경 대학생의 서사는 “감수성의 혁명”(유종호)이라는 수사가 무색하리 만큼, 가진 것이라고는 절망 밖에 없는 어둡고 궁색한 젊음을 보여준다. 이들의 내면을 장악하고 있는 지방의식, 즉 지방 출신의 열패감은 한낱 골수에 박힌 못난이 의식이 아니라 부조리한 사회에 대한 정치적 감각이다. 선망/시기는 국토의 불균형 개발로 인한 지방민의 소외를 뜻하기 때문이다. 그러나 주변인의 수치심은 부조리한 사회에 대한 정치적 비판의식이 아니라 자기 경계를 유지하기 위해 비천한 것들에 대한 혐오를 강화하기도 한다. 특히 스스로가 완전체가 아니라 취약하다는 자의식은 젠더화된 수치심으로 이어져 여성에 대한 폭력성, 공격성으로 전이된다. 이 글은 그간 김승옥의 문학에서 크게 주목받지 못한 지방민 의식을 통해 주변부의 남성성이 근대-발전의 도시로 진입해가는 과정에서 어떻게 자기혐오와 수치심을 여성에게 투사하는가에 주목하고 있다.

영어초록

April 19 Revolution is a people’s revolution that showed that each human being has a right, not amenability, and that showed political sense of freedom which justification of authority can come from the consent of the governed in the Korean political history. The reason why April 19 Revolution is ‘Revolution’, not ‘against the dictatorial government’ is that modern individual was born, which didn’t not mind resisting injustice and suppression, while he/she was aiming for a faithful authority. The will of April 19 Revolution for political freedom, however, was suppressed by the military government that came to power on a succession of revolutionary spirit, on the other hand, it was exposed to seduction of snob, as society was rapidly deconsecrated with the government development plan that planed systematical win through economic development. On a background of such social transition period, Kim Seung-ok made internal and mental maturing of a university student as a literary subject, which entered into a Modern-New Town which is dynamic modern society of “constant renewing themselves and transformation, mobility and uncertainty and desire for growth and development”. The Seoul experience of a student that came for looking for better education opportunity showed that in reality, horizontal social mobility during reorganization of land was vertical mobility that has a class-character.
For the local students of entering into Seoul without any particular preparation, to survive in a strange land, it does not matter how they do, was an ordered message. The local students who are in Seoul has a character of urban refugees in that they live in the poor food, clothing and shelter and also are agonizing over instability of way of life. The epic of the local students who are in Seoul shows dark and poor youth with nothing more hopelessness what they have than ‘rhetoric as Revolution of sensitivity (Yujongho) would be put to shame’. Local awareness that dominates their inner side, namely, a sense of defeat of the student from home-grown is not a sense of stupid held to the marrow, but is political sense for social irregularities. An envy/jealousy means alienation of local people due to development imbalance of land.
Shame of marginal man is to tighten disgust against lowborn things for maintaining self-boundary, not a sense of political critique against social irregularities. Especially, a sense of identity that they think they are very vulnerable, not being perfect body, leads to gendered shame and transfers to violence and aggression against women. This paper focuses on how marginal masculine gender projects self-hatred and shame on women during the process of entering into modern-developmental city, through a sense of local people that are not attracted, in Kim Seung-ok literature.
