초록

합천 삼가고분군은 경남 서부지역 최대 규모의 고분군으로 1세기부터 7세기까지 조성되었으며, 5～6세기에 축조된 봉토분도 300기 이상 확인되었다. 이는 삼가고분군을 축조한 세력이 가야의 유력한 세력으로 오랜 기간 존속했음을 알려준다.
삼가고분군은 최근 발굴조사가 이어지고, 토기양식과 묘제 등 고고학 자료에 대한 연구가 진척되면서 소가야를 구성한 유력한 세력 중 하나였음이 드러나고 있다. 특히 하나의 묘역에 여러 기의 석곽이 순차적으로 축조된 ‘삼가식 다곽식고분’은 소가야의 주요 묘제로 밝혀지고 있다.
5～6세기에 조성된 가야권역의 봉토분은 축조방식과 매장시설의 배치에 따라 단곽식과 다곽식 고분으로 구분된다. 단곽식은 함안․합천․창녕 등 낙동강 연안에 분포하고, 다곽식은 가야 북부지역과 서남부지역에 분포한다. 다곽식고분은 고령식과 삼가식, 고성식으로 구분된다. 고령식은 고령․거창․합천․함양 등 대가야권역의 수장층 고분에서 확인된다. 삼가식은 산청․진주․의령․하동 등 소가야권역에 분포한다. 고성식은 고성과 통영에 축조된 소가야 수장층 고분에서 확인된다.
가야의 묘제는 시간의 흐름에 따라 목관묘, 목곽묘, 석곽묘, 석실묘로 변하지만, 그 형식과 특징은 개별 정치체에 따라 세부적으로 차이가 있다. 5～6세기에 축조된 다곽식고분이 고령식, 삼가식, 고성식으로 차이를 드러내는 것도 그러한 사례 중 하나이다. 가야권역 다곽식고분에는 당시 가야사회의 지역성과 집단의 위계, 피장자의 친연관계가 반영되어 있다.

The Samga Ancient Tombs in Hapcheon are the largest ancient tombs in western South Gyeongsangnam­do Province, and were built from the 1st to the 7th century AD. More than 300 mound tombs built from the 5th and 6th century were also identified. This indicates that those who built the Samga Ancient Tombs lasted for a long time as influential powers of Gaya.
With the recent excavation of the Samga Ancient Tombs and the research progress on archaeological materials as to the earthenware style and tomb type, it is becoming clear that they were a powerful force that constituted Sogaya. In particular, the Samga-style multiple stone-lined tomb, where multiple stone-lined tombs are built sequentially in one tomb area, have been revealed as the main tomb type of Sogaya.
The mound tombs in the wider Gaya region from the 5th and 6th centuries are classified into single and multiple stone-lined tombs depending on how the tombs were constructed and burial adornments were arranged. The single stone-lined tombs are distributed along the Nakdonggang River, such as Haman, Hapcheon, and Changnyeong, while the multiple stone-lined tombs are found in northern Gaya and the farther southwest. The multiple stone-lined tomb is divided into the Goryeong, Samga, and Goseong styles. The Goryeong style is found in the ancient tombs of the leaders of the Daegaya region, such as Goryeong, Geochang, Hapcheon, and Hamyang. The Samga style is mostly distributed in the Sogaya region, such as Sancheong, Jinju, Uiryeong, and Hadong. The Goseong-style is concentrated in the ancient tombs of leaders of Sogaya in Goseong and Tongyeong.
The tomb type of Gaya was transformed over time into wooden coffin tombs, wood-lined tombs, stone-lined tombs, and stone-chamber tombs. However, their formats and characteristics vary in detail depending on the political entity. The fact that the multiple stone-lined tombs built in the 5th and 6th centuries reveal differences in the Goryeong, Samga, and Goseong styles is one such example. The study of Gaya's tomb types is important in understanding the Gaya confederacy, which consisted of various polities.
